Beatles in online song licensing talks?
LOS ANGELES Representatives of the Beatles are in discussions with various online music services about licensing their songs for distribution on the internet, people familiar with the discussions said on Tuesday. The Beatles have been one of the biggest holdouts in releasing their catalog for sale online, and the lack of such mega-hits as "Let it Be" and "Yesterday" has been cited as a major weakness for fledgling, Web-based music stores. Negotiators for the Beatles have talked with several companies, with a particular emphasis on Microsoft Corp's MSN, which is expected to open an Internet music store late this summer, people familiar with the talks told Reuters.

The free entry scheme applies to 50 national museums and galleries Museums and galleries have attracted nearly 11 million extra visitors since scrapping their entrance fees. So why do they need to embark on a month-long promotional campaign?
Museums that previously charged entrance fees saw a 72% boost in numbers after the government introduced the policy in December 2001. But the organisation behind May's Museum and Galleries Month says many of England's 1,500 museums and galleries have not reaped the benefit. "The abolition of admissions charges has generally been a good thing as it has introduced more people to museums and galleries," said Campaign for Museums director Ylva French. This is evident at London's Science Museum, where numbers have risen 120%, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, which has enjoyed a 117% boost over the past two years. 'Difficult' However, the free entry scheme only applies to England's 50 government-funded national museums and galleries, the majority of which are based in London.

Thanks for supporting Russian arts
SIR, - As the producer of the recent tour by the Russian Academy of Theatrical Arts, I should like to thank this newspaper for giving advance coverage of the event and- my friends who assisted me in the hosting of the young actors and stage managing. In addition, I should like to thank Hampton School's Drama Department for inviting the troupe, in particular headmaster Barry Martin and Mike Franzkowiak, head of drama, not forgetting Angela Marks whose help has been invaluable. I am only sorry that more people did not visit the Watermans to see the public performances by these extremely talented young students. Last Thursday I was able to see some work by the drama students at Hampton and Lady Eleanor Holles Schools, under the direction of Mike Franzkowiak and Martine Farr. Of particular merit were Sam Marks and Caroline Bird. David King, Talma Gardens, Twickenham.

Russian Internet Guide The Net civilization is the next step of human civilization on our planet. Nobody in the world is aware of amounts of information kept on the Web. A certain part of this information deals with Russian history and culture. This guide will help students and teachers to search information about Russian Culture on the Internet in both Russian and English languages. A person, who knows the classic culture of a nation, will know its future. I mean the knowledge of classical Russian literature, music, poetry, arts of Russia, which are the most influential channels, which are remaking human consciousness. It was not strange that I began to explore the Internet in English during months of my visit to my American relatives in 1997 and it was English language I used to surf over thousands of sites, which I found interesting. Later, on returning home I had a chance to start exploring the Russian Net in Russian and since that moment I am constant visitor of many Russian sites on the Internet. The Russian net has short roots in the Russian culture and economic situation is not so favorable for its development as in the USA and Western Europe. Russia was lucky because time of the fall of the Soviet regime and time of the rise of the Internet almost coincided and freedom of information in the West and in the East had balanced. If ten years ago everybody wrote about the Soviet Union as the state where there was no freedom of speech and it was difficult to find a reliable information about the people, their relationship, the Party and the State. Today there is abundance of information on the Internet about Russia and events taking place within its boarders. The Russian net is always changing presenting new rich resources of information for public interest.
