The new Moscow style of ikon painting was heavily influenced by foreign Greek and Serbian artists who were imported by the relatively wealthy Moscow Princes to paint the new churches of their city. In 1378 Theophanes, a Greek artist, painted the church of the Transfiguration in Moscow. His work in Russia was greeted with astonishment by local artists. Theophanes worked very fast and his style was extremely expressive and mystical. He could draw a large figure in fresco on a wall with guide books or drafts, a bravura performance which dumfounded the Russia artists, who had been trained to careful copy from pattern books. Local artists tried to imitate his style, but their work shows how difficult it was to master his free and easy-flowing style.

Articles by Day Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday ... Weekend 'Kitezh' Casts a Spell at the Kirov George W. Loomis International Herald Tribune
Wednesday, January 31, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG It is easy to understand why Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya" has been called the Russian "Parsifal." Each opera mixes Christian myth with medieval legend in a way that gives off an otherworldly glow. Each also moves at its own ruminative pace. "Time has stopped," says a character in "Kitezh," just as in Wagner's realm of the Holy Grail time and space allegedly become one.
"Kitezh" occupies a hallowed place in the Russian repertoire, and after an absence of half a dozen seasons from the Kirov Opera, it is once again exerting its spell.
Plot details tend to confirm the Wagner link, but Rimsky rejected Wagner where his influence might have mattered most: in the music. Instead of ripe chromaticism, we hear serene, hymn-like melodies of diatonic songfulness (though "Parsifal" has a few of those too) as well as other tunes derived from folk idioms.

Sizing Up the Job A Little Planning Goes a Long Way March 22, 1997
    By Rick Nathanson

    Journal Staff Writer
You've made up your mind: The heavy watering has got to stop.
You're going to convert that water-guzzling lawn of yours to a xeriscape and you want to get started right away.
Your first step is to rip out everything you've got, and start work with a blank slate, right? Wrong! Some local xeric crowd pleasers: Trees Shrubs Flowers Groundcovers * Water use L-low, M-moderate, E-evergreen As a matter of fact, a big patch of that water-loving grass can stay, if you and your kids enjoy the feel of it on your bare feet in the summer. That shade tree MUST stay a tree's cooling effect is tremendously valuable in a xeriscape. And don't dig up that underground sprinkler system. It will become the foundation for your new, drip irrigation system. So sit back down, pour a mug of coffee and do your initial xeriscape work with a pencil, not a rototiller. Today's Homestyle page is designed to help you make your plans. If you live in Albuquerque, you might want to call city hall before finalizing those plans. Under the Xeriscape Retrofit Incentive Program, the city is offering water bill credits of up to $250 to homeowners who convert a lawn to a xeriscape. To qualify, your plans must be approved in advance. Call 768-3655 for information.
