1. Arts & Leisure: A Russian Invasion (Memphis Flyer . 11-24-97)

A Russian Invasion
By James Busbee The exhibit commemorates the 125th anniversary of a most notable Russian-American event. In 1872, at the behest of President Ulysses S. Grant, the Russian Grand Duke Alexis visited the United States, traveling to 20 cities over three months. He arrived in Memphis on February 3, 1872, toured the city, and stayed at The Peabody. Many of the jewels are centuries-old relics of times in Russia as opulent as they were tragic. Even as the Russian people suffered under oppressive empires, their leaders indulged themselves with ever-greater extravagances of palaces and jewelry. The breadth and eminence of the Diamond Fund is matched only by the jewel collections of the British monarchy and the Shah of Iran. Some of the most famous pieces include a stick pin featuring a 7.6-carat blue diamond believed to have been cut from the famed Hope Diamond. A bracelet created in 1825 to commemorate Alexander I has a 27-carat, table-cut diamond (the largest in the world) set atop a miniature portrait of Alexander painted on ivory. Perhaps the most impressive piece of the collection is a sapphire brooch dating to 1862. The 260-carat sapphire, about the size of a doorknob, sits among 57 carats of diamonds.

Art of the State
Russian exhibit suggests government control of creativity can only extend so far By Angela Wibking Government control of the arts strikes a chill in the hearts of America's creative community. Government patronage in the form of funding, on the other hand, has them signing petitions and calling their congressmen. The truth is, you can't have the second without a degree of the first. If the government is holding the purse strings, someone or some group of individuals appointed by the government will be making determinations about who gets funded and who doesn't. Keeping the scales of control and patronage in balance is extraordinarily tricky, but growth and creativity in the arts depends on it. To see what happensand what doesn't happenwhen those scales get out of balance, head to the Tennessee State Museum to see an exhibition of paintings produced by Russian artists during 80 years of Communist rule. But be prepared for something of a surprise The nearly 60 works on view simultaneously confirm and refute every horror tale ever told about government control of the arts in the Soviet Union.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
DEAR AMCHAM MEMBERS AND FRIENDS

As now seems to be the tradition, last month was a very busy period in our organization. The committees had been preparing their plans as the first committee meetings after the Board elections were held in December. The Board was happy to see that many committees have very ambitious plans for 2002. DECEMBER IN REVIEW YEAR-END LEGISLATIVE RALLY IN PARLIAMENT
Marathon legislative voting marked the last working day of 2001 in the Hungarian Parliament. The representatives cast their votes over 40 proposed bills. EU COUNTDOWN DECISIONS IN LAEKEN
EU leaders have reiterated their commitment to reform after beginning the great debate on the Union's future at their summit in Laeken. EU COUNTDOWN AND THE WINNER IS: AUSTRIA Despite the rather obvious economic benefits that EU enlargement will provide to Austria and other EU member states, reservation and skepticism prevail with regard to the forthcoming EU accession of some Central and Eastern European countries. COMMENTARY LESSONS FROM 2001 The Russian government, in concert with the Russian oil companies, as if continuing the good behavior it demonstrated in the war against terrorism, and, by withholding exports to boost oil prices on the world market, recently stubbornly resisted all OPEC calls to cut production.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: eorge Barnes and Allen Hale are folk artists , and they have the credentials to prove it. Neither has extensive art training. They work only with materials they find on hand. They make objects they like before they wonder if someone else will like them, too. Anya Von Bremzen's cookbook, "Please to the Table," offers the definitive word on Russian cooking , which bears the stamp of the exotic cuisines of Central Asia and the Middle East and boldly borrows also from French, Polish, and German cookery. Also the crawfish , part folksy tourist icon, part sci-fi space monster; the intersection of sports and education ; the divergence of budgets and performing ; and the nature of art

There is an important rule for film festivals today. Nicole Kidman must be in at least one movie, preferably two. She sets the pace for an event that must straddle, like herself, both popular and art cinema and exemplify, like herself, the virtues of internationalism. Four months after Cannes opened with Moulin Rouge, in which the Australian Hollywood star wowed the Cote d'Azur by playing sex angel to le tout Montmartre, the Mostra del Cinema, which welcomed her to Venice last year with Tom Cruise in the couple's valedictory PR partnership for Eyes Wide Shut, has her solo-starring in two films and again being the toast of the event's first week. Both movies caught the eye, though neither might have done without her. The Others is a medium-classy English-speaking frightener from Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar, whose earlier native hit Open Your Eyes has just had a Hollywood make-over with - guess who - Tom Cruise. Kidman plays a young woman molested by spooks and spookiness in end-of- second-world-war Jersey: more when the film opens shortly in the UK. Her other Venetian offering is

In collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Washington, DC An Absurda Comica production Mistero Buffo By Dario Fo Directed by Stefano Di Pietro September 25 – 28 Limited engagement: Four performances only! In the tradition of the mediaeval jester, Nobel Laureate Dario Fo is famous for lampooning authority and championing the downtrodden, and Mistero Buffo , one of Fo’s best-loved works, is no exception: it explores sacred and religious themes through a refreshingly novel and daringly irreverent lens. Stefano Di Pietro and Francesco Gerardi of Rome’s Absurda Comica perform in the style of Fo’s Theater, creating strong theatrical images through colorful pantomime and imaginative, expressive gesture. Performed in Italian and "gramelot", an invented comic language, each scene in Mistero Buffo is accompanied by a live English translation.
