Introduction Russian is the most important of the Slavic languages and now one of the major languages of the world. The emergence of the Soviet Union in the postwar period as a major world power, coupled with tmpressive achievements in science and technology, has significantly increased the interest in and the study of Russian in recent years. With English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic, Russian is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet, whose origin dates from the 9th century. Its creators were two missionaries from Greece, the brothers Cyril and Methodius, who based it largely on the Greek. Though appearing formidable to one who has never studied it, the Russian alphabet is not difficult to learn. A number of letters are written and pronounced approximately as in English ( A, K, M, 0, T

SYLLABUS
Course description and goals:
This course introduces Russian art in its historical and cultural framework, and emphasizes the ways in which forms of art, subjects, and styles communicate ideas and values. Intended for advanced students with some experience in Art History or in Russian studies, it will develop familiarity with major periods, styles, and artists, ability to analyze and interpret works of art using both visual and written sources, and experience in doing individual research in this field. By studying characteristic works of key periods, we will identify themes and visual qualities of Russian art and consider such issues as the nature of artistic truth, relationships between Russia and Europe, the roles of realism, idealism, abstraction and the spiritual. In the second half of the semester, we will focus on the late 19th and 20th centuries: the origins of modernism, the brief, vital interaction of the artistic and political revolutions, the suppression of the avant garde and the reemergence of artistic freedom in recent years. Some classes will emphasize historical contexts and issues, others will focus on individuals or movements (e.g. Rublev, Repin, Malevich; the Peredvizhniki, Slavic revival, Constructivism, Socialist Realism). We will repeatedly raise the questions of why and how Russian art stands apart from that of western Europe, and what the terms "Russian" and "Soviet" mean in visual art.

(Description was prepared by Valentina Fedorova, Hermitage, St. Petersburg and Wojciech Zalewski) Stanford's RUSSIAN art collection is housed in several locations: in the Green Library stacks (temporarily at the Stanford Auxiliary Library), in the Art Library, in Special Collections and at the Hoover Institution Library. The Hoover component is not cataloged on line but it can be accessed through a card file in the Hoover Library Reference Room. The Hoover collection was acquired mainly by Professor Frank A. Golder during his travels to the Soviet Union in the 1920s and represents pre-revolutionary, often rare, materials. A significant portion of it is duplicated in the Green Library. The following comments take into consideration all print resources available at Stanford, regardless of their location. (See

    Russian art, Russian collectors
The startling acquisition of Malcolm Forbes's Fabergé collection for well over $90 million by the industrialist Viktor Vekselberg has thrust Russia's rich new class of art collectors into the spotlight. Not all of them are chasing imperial splendor. At Vladimir Nekrassov's Arbat Prestige cosmetics emporium on Peace Prospect here, monumental paintings of Lenin, Stalin and the Battle of Stalingrad jostle with perfume, lipstick, anti-cellulite gels, tampons and Antonio Banderas Diavolo cologne. Nearly 400 canvases — of Nikita S. Khrushchev, Yuri Gagarin, churches, moody nudes, Soviet industry and collective farms — bedeck the emporium, a former fish store. The Tretyakov Gallery borrows paintings from Mr. Nekrassov for its exhibitions. Read the full article in today's NY Times

    Welcome to Russian Enchantments.........
Icon Trinity by Parilov (1994) after the 15th century icon by Rublev For nearly one thousand years Russia was the center of the highly spiritual art of icon painting. Fasting for weeks before beginning an icon and praying constantly while painting, the iconist believed that the hand of God was at work. For centuries, icons have been revered. Some believe them to be a direct conduit to the spiritual realm. Today a few surviving artists still paint in the tradition and technique of the iconists preserving the faith, hopes and dreams of the Russian people. We believe this art is the Faberge of the nineties because of its increasing rarity. Miniature work is being done by the best artists today that surpasses most of that done during the Soviet era and compares to paintings, now priceless, done centuries ago. These masterpieces in miniature capture the magic of Russian history and can provide anyone with a vehicle for hours of peaceful contemplation. Please enjoy our overview of this ancient field. We welcome any of your suggestions, questions or comments. The Humpbacked Pony by A. Borunov (1955)
