The Amber Room has been recreated in Russia A mystery surrounding the whereabouts of one of the world's greatest works of art, Peter the Great's Amber Room, may have been solved.
It had been thought that the treasure - erected at a palace near St Petersburg in the mid-18th century - was stolen by the Nazis on invading the Soviet Union. But new evidence suggests that the Amber Room may have been destroyed by the Russians themselves. The revelation is made in previously unpublished KGB and Stasi files. They are included in a new book on the Amber Room by Catherine Scott-Clark and Adrian Levy, which is published on 3 June. The chamber, crafted from six tons of amber, was erected at the tsars' palace in Tsarskoye Selo, outside St Petersburg. When the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, they wrenched its precious panels from the walls and took them to Konigsberg (the modern Kaliningrad) on the Baltic Coast. The Amber Room was never seen again, and the Russians have always insisted the Nazis buried or destroyed it.

My painting reflects the vivid beauty of nature around us. I am trying to show this beauty to the modern man who often sees the world strictly through the prism of the technical progress."

    Why Russian Art ?
    Birch Tree Art
is pleased to welcome you and introduce you to a select group of Russian Impressionist artists.
    RUSSIAN IMPRESSIONISM ?
In the late XIXth century, Russian artists such as Levitan, Korovin, Serov ... were executing their interpretation of Impressionism when the Bolchevik Revolution erupted and the Soviet Communist regime closed its borders to the outside world. During the next 70 years, the international art market had little exposure or knowledge of the artistic trends developing in the Soviet Union: "Dissident Art" is the most popular today due to the political and repressive content and the oppression inflicted on these artists; "Soviet Realism" also known as "Propaganda Art" portrays art commissioned by the Soviet regime to demonstrate the multifaceted benefits of communism and the glorification of the Russian worker, peasant, political figure and bureaucrat; and then "Russian Impressionism" where artists abstracted their political environment and daily hardships to find their inspiration and strength in the power of nature and human kind.
As Perestroyka opened the Russian borders to the world, a number of artists, considering themselves the last Russian Impressionists were overjoyed at finally being able to exhibit their work outside of their country. Birch Tree Art is proud to have found and been able to bring to the United States these incredibly talented artists and introduce them to prospective art collectors.
