T hroughout most of Russia's history, art, music, literature, and history were either folk art or that of the Orthodox Church. The reason for this is that during the Renaissance, Russia was a hegemony of the Mongol-Tatar Empire and thus missed the rebirth of the arts which swept Western Europe. Peter I and Catherine II changed all that with the secularization of Russian culture in the 18th century. R ussian artists, however, have always had to leave Russia to escape realism imposed on them by the Russian critics and art world. Chagal, Kandinsky, and many other progressive artists could only develop their art in Western Europe. This page contains a growing list of sources on Russian art: folk, ecclesiastical, and secular.
    The History of Russian Art
Alexander Boguslawski of Rollins College maintains a wonderfully rich site describing and illustrating the history of Russian art from the icons to the 20th century. The site discusses periods, artists, schools, and trends. It is beautifully designed and laid out so as to be easily navigated. Everything you want to know about Russian art, including the art itself, may be found here. Boguslawski has now added an equally splendid exhibit and treatise on Russian lubok folk painting.

    Russian Realism
Portraits of major Russian intellectual figures of the period were a specialty of many of the wanderers. This portrait of the writer Ivan Turgenev (1872) is by Vasily Grigorievich Perov (1833-82). Note the concern with expressing intense psychology through the portrait.
Ilya Efimovich Repin (1844-1930) painted this brilliant portrait of Modest Musorgsky just weeks before the composer's death, a death hastened by the ravages of an alcoholism that can clearly be seen on this canvas. The almost cruel naturalism of the painting has shocked and fascinated viewers since its appearance.
Another major concern of the wanderers was the depiction, usually by indirect means, of the social injustices of the day. The left-leaning social consciousness of most of these painters, along with their realistic style, would make them acceptable during the heyday of Socialist Realism from the 1930s through the end of the Soviet period. In this painting, "The Condemned" (1872) by Vladimir Egorovich Makovsky (1846-1920), the prisoner is clearly meant to be a young educated idealist who is being sentenced for attempts to agitate among the peasants.
Landscape, particularly melancholy and lyrical views of central Russian landscapes was another genre at which the wanderers excelled. Although some of these paintings were attacked for lacking a social message, most of the group produced at least some work of this type. Perhaps the most famous of the wanderer landscape specialists was Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (1832-98). This landscape, entitled "Autumn Day, Sokolniki Park" (1879) is by Isaac Levitan (1860-1900), a painter who never officially joined the organization. Nevertheless, he was close to them in spirit. He was also one of the best friends of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, and if one wants to imagine the kind of landscape that would have been in Chekhov's mind as the backdrop for a play like "The Seagull" it would be hard to beat this.

    http://www.russianartgallery.com/krychevsky.shtml
One of the greatest artists of our times, Vasyl Krychevsky (1873-1952) , an outstanding personality and artist of broad inspirations represents a whole epoch of development of the Ukrainian modern art of the first half of our century. Over a period of a full half century, the entire artistic movement in the center of Ukraine was in one way or another connected with the name of this artist. In the field of architecture V. Krychevsky represents the whole artistic trend of the rebirth of Ukrainian style. Basing his works on the historical heritage of Ukrainian architecture, the artist espoused, to a larger degree the utilization of popular (peasant) motives of building. Industriously gathering this rich material, the artist-architect transformed them in a modern spirit, applying architectural forms to contemporary constructional means and material. In spite of the picturesque of his architectural forms, which he created, his buildings were built in conformity with the constructive principle whereby, he used few moderate ornaments and details and tended to apply less and less frequently purely decorative means.

    10. Art & Architecture Of Russia
russian art Architecture. It developed a renewed interest in traditional russian art forms, including both decorative folk art and, of course, icon painting.
    http://www.geographia.com/russia/rusart01.htm
F rom icons and onion domes to suprematism and the Stalin baroque, Russian art and architecture seems to many visitors to Russia to be a rather baffling array of exotic forms and alien sensibilities. Without any sense of the rich tradition of Russian culture, an appreciation of the country's enormous artistic wealth becomes a game of historical anecdote"the church where so-and-so took refuge from what's-his-name"or a meaningless collection of aesthetic baubles"I like the blue domes the best." In fact, Russian art and architecture are not nearly so difficult to understand as many people think, and knowing even a little bit about why they look the way they do and what they mean brings to life the culture and personality of the entire country. Icons The best collections of icons are to be found in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum, though of course many Russian churches have preserved or restored their traditional works. The Great Experiment The rising influence of European culture in Russia during the 17th and 18th centuries brought Russian artwork closer to the familiar traditions of western painting. It wasn't until the end of the 19th century that the next great body of uniquely Russian artistic styles arose, having developed in conjunction with liberal forces of social reform. This modern movement took many different directions almost from its inception, and it would be impossible to describe all of them. However, even a very general acquaintance with their common ideas and interests makes their work much more accessible.

Virtual sworn brothers Rostov-on-Don Novosibirsk document.write( ''); MOSCOW Culture Museums Very old Russian icons were painted using the Byzantine prototypes, in keeping with the lofty traditions of Byzantine art of the 11th-12th centuries, which lie at the foundation of the entire Christian world culture. Some of ancient icons were brought to Rus from Byzantium. The icons had a tendency to be narrative, "to tell a story" while treating traditional religious subjects and images. Images of Savior and Our Lady were favorite for masters of early Russian religious art. The icons depicting episodes from the saints'lives were also widespread. In the Middle Ages it was believed that the icons were the "true" portraits of saints and biblical events. Combinations of vermilion and ochre-yellow tones were frequently used to make much more impression. Moscow became the largest center of old Russian art. There was created the Moscow art school towards the end of the 15th-16th centuries. Moscow art golden age was linked with the activity of such prominent painters as Theophanes the Greek (originally from Byzantium), Andrei Rublev, Daniil Cherny and Dionisi. Andrei Rublev may be called the most outstanding painter of old Russia. His name was mentioned often in various historical sources, his icon-painting manner was considered to be the best just in the 15th and 16th centuries.
