Historical Archaeology Series The Bixby Homesite: 1800-1845
The actual household objects of the Bixby house, the house itself with its outbuildings, and the surrounding New England landscape illustrate clearly the changes in society and in work in the first half of the 19th century. Maps and artists' reconstructions of this Massachusetts house, now located at Old Sturbridge Village, show the changing lives of the inhabitants during the 1800-1845 period. The detailed text documents the multidisciplinary approach used to effect our understanding of these lives, this place, and this period. By J. Edward Hood and David M. Simmons.
85 slides $155 Nautical Archaeology: Non-Intrusive Approaches
This set illustrates underwater archaeological techniques which are non-destructive and distinguish research from treasure hunting. Case studies include historic shipwrecks such as the great Monitor, iron sailing ships, a 17th century wooden warship, and ships associated with the building of a fort in the Dry Tortugas in 1850. By Richard A. Gould.

Mirabilis.ca home page about this blog contact June 11, 2004 Irish Viking settlement The account of a Viking settlement recently discovered in Ireland is sounding more and more interesting. From the Waterford News and Star:
It is thought that up to 4,000 people may have lived there. To date, nails, weights, jewellery, silverware, weapons and some ceramics have been found along with some ship fragments. From evidence found at the site, a fleet of 120 Viking ships occupied the Woodstown site about 812. This, in turn, gave them control of Waterford Harbour and of the three-river system, the Suir, the Barrow and the Norse, allowing them ready access upriver to the rich lands and monasteries of these river valleys. After a decade of painstaking cleaning, Berlin's Pergamon Museum has unveiled the restored marble frieze of the Pergamon Altar, the second century B.C. centerpiece of its collection. The 371 foot-long frieze decorated the outside walls of the altar, which was built between 197 and 156 B.C. in the present-day Turkish town of Bergama. A German engineer discovered fragments of the frieze, which had been taken apart and incorporated into the walls of a fortress, in 1864.

The Chair of Archaeology was founded in October of 1975. At that time it was the only chair occupied with problems of archaeology and ancient history at universities in the trans-Ural region, the only in Siberia and the Far East. For a long time the young Chair had been headed by Anatoly Ivanovich Martynov who made great efforts for its formation, organization and development. But above all, that the Chair under his leadership in the 70-s managed to find its realization at works of industrial construction (the Law of preservation of memorials of history and culture). That was a grand action. The Chair took part in investigation of memorials in the flood zone of the Krapivinsky hydrosystem, in the zone of the Kansk-Achinsk Fuel and Energy Complex (KAFEC), participated in study of memorials in the area of coal pits, etc. As a result a large number of memorials and sources was saved which are now the property of the state.

Are Russian Jews Descended from the Khazars?
A Reassessment Based upon the Latest Historical, Archaeological, Linguistic, and Genetic Evidence by Kevin Alan Brook
The "traditional" view is that Eastern European Jews descend almost entirely from French and German Jews. This essay presents the pros and cons of the controversial "Khazar theory" of Eastern European Jewish origins and will attempt to provide a likely middle-ground solution to the question. Unlike other treatments of the question, this essay uses recent discoveries, is meant to be objective, and is fully sourced so that you can be guaranteed of the authenticity of the information. In summary, I argue in this essay that Eastern European Jews descend both from Khazarian Jews AND from Israelite Jews. PART 1. Evidence in favor of the Khazar theory According to most historical sources, Judaism was widespread among the Khazar inhabitants of the Khazar kingdom. Archaeological evidence, however, has not yet corroborated this. The findings described below, some of which are more conclusive than others, add strength to the argument that there were many Jews residing in eastern Europe prior to the immigration of German, Austrian, Bohemian, Spanish, and Portugese Jews into Poland and Hungary.
  • Judaism is almost always noted in our medieval documentary sources as having been the most important religion in the Khazar kingdom. It is often the only religion cited when referring to the Khazars. And the Hebrew script is noted as being the script of 10th century Khazars. Here are some examples:

Piecing together the lives of a people who have not left a written history of their own is a painstaking task, akin to putting together a jigsaw puzzle without a picture. But that's what some archaeologists are trying to do on the steppes of Asia.
In the Tsaaram Valley not far from the Russian-Mongolian border, they are exploring royal tombs of the Xiongnu, a confederation of nomadic tribes that dominated Central Asia for two centuries beginning about 2,300 years ago.

The Xiongnu, or Asian Huns, were fierce warriors who invaded China beginning in the third century B.C. Among the first to use a stirrup, they rode into battle on harnessed horses, which enabled them to easily defeat Chinese armies that fought in chariots and on foot.
