SHOP DESIGN RUSSIA 2003 - International trade fair in Moscow for the booming store construction sector Extremely positive results for the debut event The premiere of the international SHOP DESIGN RUSSIA trade fair drew to a close in Moscow on 26 September 2003. The specialist retail fair was jointly staged by Messe Düsseldorf and Russian organiser Expo-Park at EXPOCENTR/Krasnaya Presnya – Moscow’s largest and most state-of-the-art fairgrounds – and enjoyed levels of exhibitor and visitor satisfaction that surpassed expectation. A total of 100 companies from 14 countries showcased innovations, trends and solutions in shop construction, shop equipment, promotional and POS materials as well as retail technology over a net exhibition space of 2,200 square metres. Some 12,000 trade visitors viewed the broad range of offerings presented by Russian suppliers and also made enquiries at the stands of the 25 international companies making their debut on the Russian market at Shop Design Russia 2003. Confirming this, Michael Ripfl, Export Manager at UMDASCH SHOP CONCEPT GmbH, Austria, commented: "We had prepared for our participation at the fair in Russia with the help of initial analyses and observations. (1) Western E urope: Economy Recovering From Slowdown
[1] Trends in Trade The EU economy had been slowing since the middle of 1995, but began recovering in the second half of 1996. Spring 1997 Economic Forecasts of the European Commission predicted that the real growth rate of the EU GDP would grow from the 1.6 percent of 1996 to 2.4 percent in 1997 and 2.8 percent in 1998 and that the recovery would therefore be firm. The reasons given for the recovery were the favorable overseas demand, stable prices and exchange rates, and falling interest rates. EUROSTAT (EU statistical office) reported that the EU exported a total of 1,674.9 billion ECU in 1996 (up 5.5% from the previous year) and imported a total of 1,580.5 billion ECU (up 4%) giving it a higher trade surplus of 94.4 billion ECU (up 39%). This shows that the economy is being supported by overseas demand.
The member states of the EU have been working to achieve the conditions for economic convergence required for participation in the Economic Monetary Union (EMU), but they have had to maintain a balance among business recovery, job creation, and fiscal balance when steering their economies.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NIST 94-19 April 25, 1994 Contact: Roger Rensberger U.S./RUSSIA STANDARDS GROUP (301) 975-2762 TO PROMOTE INTERNATIONAL TRADE U.S. and Russian participants at the third meeting of the Intergovernmental U.S./Russian Business Development Committee's Standards Working Group in Moscow, May 24-25, 1994, will define areas of mutual interest in automotive products, telecommunications equipment, pharmaceuticals and medical devices for the acceptance of conformity assessment measures between the two countries to promote international trade. A U.S. delegation of more than 20 industry and government officials interested in standards-related trade issues will be led by Stanley I. Warshaw, director of the Office of Standards Services at the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology. The meeting will be hosted by the State Committee of the Russian Federation for Standardization, Metrology, and Certification, known as GOSSTANDART. Warshaw and Serguei F. Bezverkhi, president of GOSSTANDART, co-chair the Standards Working Group. The agenda for the May 1994 meeting will focus on priority items in a joint statement, "Partnership for Economic Progress." This document on the principles and objectives for the development of trade, economic cooperation and investment between the United States and the Russian Federation resulted from a meeting of the Presidential Business Development Mission and the U.S./Russian Business Development Committee in Moscow, March 28-30, 1994. The statement reads in part: "The two sides consider cooperation in international standardization and openness of conformity assessment indispensable to eliminating or avoiding the creation of technical barriers to trade, and intend to proceed vigorously with the program of work agreed upon in the Joint Communiqu‚ on Cooperation in Conformity Assessment issued in Moscow on Dec. 16, 1993, at the conclusion of the meetings of the Joint Commission on Technological Cooperation led by Vice President Albert Gore and Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin." The communiqu‚ commits NIST and GOSSTANDART to develop mutual recognition agreements, or MRAs, for the acceptance of test data required for product certification. Under SWG, NIST and GOSSTANDART will establish procedures whereby the Russian government will accept test data from laboratories accredited by the U.S. government that are found competent to test products for compliance with the requirements of the Russian Consumer Protection Law of 1993. Jan Kalicki, U.S. ombudsman and counselor to the Departments of State, Commerce and Energy, stated at the March 1994 meeting that: o despite the fact that the U.S. health and safety standards and certification system is acknowledged as the best in the world, Russia does not recognize U.S. test results or product certification; o lack of Russian testing facilities and high fees for retesting U.S. products are a rapidly growing impediment to trade. Significant delays in the export of tele- communications and other equipment are being reported; and o the U.S./Russia SWG must have the support of the highest levels of government to resolve this. The Intergovernmental U.S./Russian Business Development Committee was established in 1992 by the U.S. Commerce Department and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations. The aim of SWG is to explore mutually advantageous avenues of cooperation, including promotion of international standards and product acceptance criteria. As a non-regulatory agency of the Commerce Department's Technology Administration, NIST promotes U.S. economic growth by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements and standards. -30- NOTE TO EDITORS: The U.S. SWG delegation also has been invited to meet with Ukrainian standards interests and Yuriy D. Severinov, president of the State Committee of Ukraine on Standardization, Metrology, and Certification, in Kiev on May 26-27, 1994. For information on SWG, contact Mary Saunders, Office of Standards Services, A603 Administration Building, NIST, Gaithersburg, Md. 20899-0001, (301) 975-4000, fax: (301) 963-2871.

Trade with Canada
Europe remains, after the USA, Canada's most important partner. As Europe continues to move towards a powerful and influential unity, its importance to Canada will certainly increase. This will of course include the economic area of our relationship which has expanded well in recent years. Two-way trade with Europe in 2001 amounted to over Cdn. $65 billion, up Cdn. $15 billion from the level recorded four years earlier. Some notable increases in our exports have occurred in high value-added sectors of the Canadian economy including information and communications technology, life sciences, and aerospace and transportation industries. Foreign Direct Investment into Canada has also increased significantly with the year 2000 being a banner year - in 2000, some Cdn. $28 billion in new investment was attracted from Europe bringing the cumulative stock of European investment here to a level of Cdn. $85 billion. This investment is vital to extend the international "reach" of our companies into the global economy (including the NAFTA market) and to enhance the managerial, marketing and technological capabilities of our firms. The Congress got down to business despite Administration’s attempts to disrupt its work October10, Minsk. To preserve trade union unity and to oppose the Governmental interference is item number one on the agenda of the Regular Third Congress of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus (FTUB) that opened yesterday in the Trade Union Headquarters. The day before the delegates were faced with a massive pressure campaign on behalf of President Lukashenko and his Administration. The very event of the Congress was endangered by a Governmental agencies’ decision to close a Trade Union Federation’s bank account under a formal pretext and to initiate criminal suits against its leaders. In their welcoming addresses the guests repeatedly stressed the importance of the Belarus trade unions struggle to protect not only their own independence but also the principles of freedom fundamental for the country’s well-being. Mark Blondel, Vice President of the ICFTU, said that the people of Belarus is now living under the last dictatorship in Europe. As to the weight of pressure imposed on the trade unions, Belarus is second only to Columbia where trade union leaders are being simply shot dead.
