Gender verification at the Olympics
For the past 30 years, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been routinely checking female Olympic competitors to determine whether they are genuinely female, but the Committee has wisely decided to abandon such gender verification for games in Sydney. Critics of the IOC's new policy contend that it ensures that transvestites will mount the medal platforms at the Sydney games, but the likelihood that a male masquerading as a female will actually garner gold, silver, or bronze is quite remote. To understand why no more than a small handful of males will be competing in female events, we need to understand why Olympic officials have been concerned about the gender of female athletes and why athletes' sexual identities are not automatically determined by the classical 'XX' or 'XY' chromosomal compositions. In the early days of the modern Olympics, gender verification was not a pressing issue (not so in the original Olympic Games, however, when only men were allowed to compete - and the maleness of the competition was ensured by a rule which required all competitors to romp around in the nude). The founder of the modern games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, actually wanted the Olympics to remain a male-only 'club'. As a result, only 19 women took part in the 1900 games, and there were just 57 females at the 1912 Olympics; naturally this limited participation in female events ensured that the number of transvestites and transsexuals would be small.

Greek Sports We have already seen that the ancient Greeks were very good artists and actors. However, this is not all that they did well. Keep reading to find out about sports and athletes in ancient Greece. What role did sports play in ancient Greece? The ancient Greeks were huge sports fans. Every four years, the Olympic Games were held in the staduim at Olympia. The best athletes in Greece competed in different events that were a part of religious life. The games began with a sacrifice to the god Zeus . Because the games were religious, anyone who was caught cheating during the games was never allowed to compete again because cheating was considered disrespectful to the gods. photo courtesy of Michael Bennett What types of sports could I have played? Many of the games played in the Olympic Games of ancient Greece are still included in the Olympics of today. Three of these games are boxing, weightlifting , and the pentathalon. Boxing was much the same in ancient Greece as it is today. Boxers padded their hands in cloth and fought until one of them was knocked out. The pentathalon was made up of five different events: discus throwing , javelin throwing, wrestling, running, and long jumping. All of these events are still included in the Olympics today. One event from the ancient Greek Olympics that is too dangerous to be included in the games today is chariot racing.

from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler:
This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

Sustainable Sport Management is a comprehensive guide to managing sport organizations of all types and sizes in a more responsible manner. The authors bring their unparalleled experience and combined insight to one of the great challenges of the 21 st Century: Developing and implementing systems and processes that promote economic, social and environmental responsibility as a mutually-reinforcing whole, not as mutually-exclusive parts. In defining what such an approach might initially look like, this book offers a prescription for sport decision-makers and managers that will go a long way to ensuring the viability and vitality of any sport organization, within a healthy and vibrant social and natural environment. Written as a practical user’s manual, this book is packed with success stories and case studies, including a major study of the Sydney 2000 “green Olympics” initiatives.

On sport in Finland
Written for Virtual Finland by Joe Brady. Drawing: Pekka Vuori Mika Häkkinen: Finland's Formula One Champion
of the World, 1998 and 1999. The Finns, like any reasonable people, accept that some folk need folk heroes and they do not dismiss fondness for sport and its heroes as a symptom of immaturity. On the contrary, they generally see sport as a commendable form of human endeavour. This may be because in this small society top athletes of either gender tend not to behave like overpaid prima donnas. Even when they are overpaid they remain recognisable to the public as mortals, people who live next door. In the 1920s, the early years of Finnish independence, the dominant sporting hero was the long distance runner, Paavo Nurmi , whose name was turned into that yawn-inspiring sobriquet "the flying Finn." Because he was so famous in his day, his country's name became known, too. This was at the time when Finland needed to establish a presence internationally as an independent sovereign state after the centuries of rule by Sweden followed by the years under Russian domination. The winner of nine gold and three silver Olympic medals in the 1920s, and the holder of a myriad world records, Nurmi was a loner on the track, dour and remote in his prime, introspective and disillusioned with his athletic performances later in life.

According to Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the world's largest photography school, "These tips will help you get great photos regardless of whether you are at an Olympic swim meet or your child's soccer game." 1. Fill the frame. Try to fill the frame with a player's body, rather than simply showing him or her as a distant speck. The type of picture you're looking for is a closeup action shot. A shot that fills the frame with just one or two players in the heat of a basketball game or a gymnast swinging from the parallel bars.
