http://www.publiscan.fi/sp03e-7.htm
The Little Giant of the Olympics T he modern Olympic Games began in Athens in 1896. Finland's history of victories in them is nearly as old, spanning the 90 years from the second Olympiad in Athens in 1906 to Atlanta 1996. The centenary of the birth of one of the greatest Olympic athletes of all time, Finland's Paavo Nurmi, was celebrated in 1997. The Finnish contribution to the Olympics has been very central, indeed quite unique for a small country. In the period since 1906, it has won at least one gold medal in every Olympiad, a distinction that only four other countries can point to. The Finns' have done best in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre running events, in which they have won overwhelmingly more medals than any other country. Indeed, there have often been enough good Finnish runners to ensure that two or even three of them could stand together on the victors' podium at the medal ceremony. The first of the great Finnish runners was the hero of the Stockholm (1912) and Antwerp (1920) games Hannes Kolehmainen. "Smiling Hannes", as he was nicknamed, was an inspirational figure who, as the saying goes, "ran Finland onto the world map". The next to bear the standard onwards on the trail blazed by Kolehmainen was Paavo Nurmi, the "Flying Finn" and the greatest long-distance runner of them all. In addition to his nine Olympic victories, he set a total of 31 world records. The records have been surpassed many times in the meantime, but no one has ever been able to better Nurmi's sheer superiority and the indomitable confidence that he demonstrated at meet after meet, year-in year-out. Indeed, it was always said that Nurmi was racing the clock, not the other competitors.

ANCIENT ORIGINS HUNT TURNS FROM FOOD TO MEDALS In the sphere of track and field, there are at least two events that precede the ancient Greeks and running races. The pole vault formed part of the ancient Irish Taliteann Games in 1829BC, the origins of the activity stemming from the use of poles to jump over streams. Wood was used up until the 19th century, when bamboo from Asia was deemed better for the purpose. The hammer, too, was thrown at the Taliteann Games. The most famous of all track and field events in history is, arguably, a road race; the marathon. Legend has it that the race was devised by the Greeks to commemorate Pheidippides, a soldier who ran 25 miles to bring home news of the Athenian victory over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. Pheidippides ran, yelled out the great news and then dropped dead, so the story goes. In honour of the soldier who went the extra mile, the marathon of the ancient Games was run over 26 miles.

Why can't we talk openly about the genetics of athletic excellence? By Jon Entine It's Kenya's national sport, the passion of the masses. Little boys dream that one day, they might soak up the cheers of the adoring fans that regularly crowd the stands at the National Stadium in Nairobi. The best players are national icons. The selection process to spot the great stars begins at a very young age. Coaches backed by federal outlays comb the countryside to find the next generation of potential athletes. The most promising of the lot are sent to special schools and provided extra coaching. It's not an exaggeration to call Kenya's national sport a kind of national religion. According to conventional and socially acceptable wisdom, this is a familiar story the sure cultural explanation for the phenomenal success of Kenyan distance runners. There's only one problem: The national sport, the hero worship, the adoring fans, the social channeling that all speaks to Kenya's enduring love affair with not running, but soccer. Despite the enormous success of Kenyan runners in the past 15 years, running remains a relative afterthought in this soccer-crazed nation.

Name a sport where you're encouraged to get your play clothes dirty and Mom and Dad still think it's cool. If you said, "CROSS COUNTRY," you're exactly RIGHT! Cross country is one of the few sports that actually encourages you to run through the mud and puddles (or sometimes snow and ice) in pursuit of victory. Many years ago, cross country was also an Olympic sport. It was contested as a 'team' event at the 1904, 1912, 1920 and 1924 Summer Games, and as an individual event at the 1912, 1920 and 1924 Games. (USATF Trivia Question: Can you name the only USA individual Olympic medallist in Olympic Cross Country? If you can't guess, the answer will be listed at the bottom of this story.) USATF's Junior Olympic program is made up of preliminary meets in many of our 57 local Associations, which lead to their Association Championships, and then to 16 Regional Championships. Thousands participate and the group narrows to the 'best of the best' at the National Championships each December. Last year, the meet had more than 2,500 entries.

    Sprinters have a running feud
May 18, 2004 NEW YORK The rivalry between American sprinters Maurice Greene and Tim Montgomery moved off the track yesterday but stayed just as hot in the ever-growing arena of drug allegations and innuendos. ADVERTISEMENT Greene, who lost his world record in the 100-meter dash to Montgomery in 2002, said he supported the work of the US Anti-Doping Agency and wouldn't be against the banning of an athlete for something other than a positive drug test. In the fallout from the current federal investigation into BALCO for illegal steroid distribution, the USADA has said it may ban an athlete based on information presented to the grand jury in San Francisco. "If you don't deal with people like that, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about," Greene said. That was a not-so-veiled reference to Montgomery and Marion Jones, who have testified before the grand jury about their relationship with Victor Conte, the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, which is suspected as the source of THG, a previously undetectable steroid. Montgomery and Jones have both denied drug use. "I stand behind USADA and all they are trying to do," Greene said. "They made THG to be undetected. They weren't supposed to find it. What do you do now if you know someone had possessed it or had dealings with those who had made it? There's no room for cheaters in this sport. A one- or two-year ban is not enough."

A Modern Perspective of the Ancient Olympic Events
by Richard Bell Today's Modern (Summer) Olympic Games have 32 different categories of competitive events. When you consider that of these many, like track and field, have several events within the category and then break down further to men's and women's and team and individual competition, it is nearly impossible to keep track of the Games as they progress. Things were simpler in the "old days." The Ancient Olympics had 13 events divided into 6 main categories. Of course they were for men only. The main categories were Boxing, Equestrian events, Pankration, Pentathlon, Running and Jumping. The Equestrian events were broken down into two sub-categories: chariot racing and riding. The Pentathlon was a combination of five events: discus, javelin, jump, running, and wrestling. Boxing in ancient Greece had fewer rules than boxing today. There were no rounds and boxers fought until one of them was knocked out, or admitted he had been beaten. There was no rule that prevented a boxer from hitting an opponent when he was down. There was no weight class in either the men's or boy's divisions and the contestants were chosen randomly. The boxers did not wear gloves but wrapped their hands and wrists with leather straps called himantes.
