The Olympic Games is the pinnacle of any athlete's ambitions. There is no greater prize in sport than an Olympic Gold Medal and this book gives a rundown of the greatest Olympic performances of all time. This book was published before the Sydney Games, but although a little out of date, it is very interesting to look at the predictions that are made for Sydney (did you know that the same Aussie team had won the previous two coxless four rowing events and were looking for the hat-trick!). For each of the summer and winter games, up to 1996, there is a chapter with descriptions of the most momentous events and a range of photos summarising the main stories. At the back of the book is a listing of each of the medallists in every event since the first games in Athens in 1896. The descriptions of each of the Olympics are only a page long – and could do with giving slightly more detail, but this is more than made up for by the fantastic array of photographs that accompany it. In all there are over 1000 photographs giving a thorough pictorial history of the games from their inception.

Olympic Preview - What can we expect in Atlanta?
Guess what's fast approaching, like a locomotive? In less than two months time, the Olympic Games return to the USA - Atlanta Georgia, to be exact. In this new age of multimedia, coverage of the Olympiad will blanket the world of sports and beyond for 17 days in late July and early August. We marathoners had our 100th anniversary celebration in Boston last month. Now the Olympic Games will turn 100, celebrating the anniversary of the first modern Games in Athens, 1896. It's still early, but here are few questions that are begging answers as we look down the road to hot 'lanta - and I mean hot.

Steroid Scandal Threatens Running Star's Olympic Chances
POSTED: 10:14 am PST March 25, 2004 UPDATED: 12:01 pm PST March 25, 2004 The steroid scandal that has rocked the professional world of sports could also affect the Olympics. According to NBC11 News partners at the San Jose Mercury News , Regina Jacobs may be banned from the Summer Games in Greece. The Stanford graduate, who now lives in Oakland, has won 24 national titles as a middle distance runner. But, the newspaper says, Jacobs has tested positive for the banned substance THG. The positive test could result in a two-year ban, ending her chances to participate in the Athens Olympics.

by Peter Hadzipetros Running for a reason Running can take a lot out of you, but it also has the power to give back. Running can be the most self-centred of sports. You spend a lot of time focused on getting better, setting a personal best, running the race of your life. You design your training program to get you to a level of fitness so you can push your limits. Doesn't matter if you're an elite athlete trying to make the Olympic team, or a weekend warrior, trying to prove something to yourself. But at the same time, it can be the most giving of sports. While better than 17,000 athletes were beaten and battered by Boston's blast furnace April 19, $7 million was being raised for charity. Last year, marathons across the U.S. raised $560 million for charity. In this country, the annual Terry Fox Run has so far raised $340 million for cancer research. That's not counting the dollars that flow from walks/runs in support of breast cancer research.

The Avery Brundage Collection is a major resource for the study of 20th century sports and the development of international athletic competition. A 1909 UIUC civil engineeering graduate, Avery Brundage was a dominant figure in the sports world for over forty years, from the early 1930's until his death in 1975. He was president of the International Olympic Committee from 1952 to 1972. Prior to his death, Brundage willed his archive of papers, books, awards and memorabilia to the University of Illinois. In 1976, an additional shipment of material was received from the Brundage Estate. The collection is comprised of three distinct parts: I. Olympic Bid: Coe Takes Up the Running in Fresh Attempt to Defy the Odds
Duncan Mackay on the urgent promotion of Britain's double gold medallist.
By Guardian Newspapers, 5/21/2004 It is ironic that London is pinning its hopes of winning the 2012 Games on Sebastian Coe, of whom Margaret Thatcher once said: "That young man doesn't understand the politics of sport."
But, if the International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge stands on a podium in Singapore on July 6 next year, rips open the envelope and reads out "London", it will surely represent the greatest victory of Lord Coe's career.
Coe won four Olympic medals and smashed 12 world records but he has never faced an opponent as formidable as Paris. The report of the IOC assessment committee ranks the French capital's bid so vastly superior to London's that Coe appears to have been drafted in as the new chairman and president because even Barbara Cassani acknowledged that she could not close the gap.
Coe, now 47, compares the situation with 1983 when he was laid low with a viral ailment which induced a state of incessant tiredness.
