The other ran with heart and soul, and the burden of a nation's identity. Both Michael Johnson and Cathy Freeman turned in spectacular 400-meter performances when nothing else would do. The roar of the crowd and the emotion after the race "seemed to absorb into my every pore," said Freeman. Said Johnson: "I'll take great memories from these Games." Freeman bounced up and down on the medal stand. Johnson carried an American flag around the track. A day that began with the worst in sport world shot put champion C.J. Hunter

  • Storylines By Mitch Gelman and Adam Levine, CNNSI.com SYDNEY, Australia A pair of golden shoes and a national heroine took center stage at Olympic Stadium, and a veteran who couldn't jump higher than his competitors thought his way onto the medal stand. On a cold Sunday night during which a downpour created puddles on the track, Michael Johnson cruised 400 meters in his golden shoes to earn a place in Monday night's final. Cathy Freeman ran through the rain to win a spot in the women's 400 final. If she wins gold Monday night, don't be surprised if they name Olympic Stadium after her. While the high-profile runners drew the flashbulbs, the high jumpers faced off in what turned out to be part championship boxing match, part chess match.

    Triathlon

The triathlon has only been in existence since 1974, but it will make its debut as an Olympic sport in the Sydney Games. It consists of three disciplines - swimming, cycling and running.
    The Basics
    • The race is continuous with no breaks between legs. A quick transition from each leg to the next is crucial. A maximum of 50 athletes will compete in each of the men's and women's events.

    Swimming
The first leg of the triathlon is a swim around Farm Cove in Sydney Harbour. Competitors may use any stroke. Swimming caps are mandatory. Length: 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) Cycling The second leg of the race is cycling. Cyclists will often ride in packs to benefit from lower wind resistance. Hel-mets and covered torsos are mandatory. Length: 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) Running The last leg of the triathlon is the run. The athletes may run or walk. Shoes and covered torsos are mandatory. Length: 10 kilometer run (6.2 miles)

Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History MODERN PENTATHLON The modern pentathlon was introduced at the 1912 Olympics as a test of military skillsor, at least, the skills that were traditionally taught at military academies of the time. It was designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the chief founder of the modern Olympic Games. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. Only Army officers were allowed to participate in 1912, when the United States was represented by a 26-year-old second lieutenant, George S. Patton, a skilled rider and fencer. Patton did very well in four of the events and might well have won the gold medal except for his poor marksmanship. He finished 21st in the pistol shooting event, which dropped him to fifth overall. Scoring was originally based on a competitor's placing in the various events, with the lowest score winning. It's now based on a scoring table similar to the one used in track and field for the decathlon. Standards are set for each event and a competitor receives 1,000 points for equaling the standard. Points are added if the standard is exceeded and subtracted if the performance falls below the standard.

The young American sprinter had completed her sport's most prized double, winning gold medals in both the 100 and 200 meters at the World Track and Field Championships in Paris last August. But instead of celebrating, White was trying to explain why she had tested positive for the banned stimulant modafinil, often used to treat narcolepsy. Dewy-eyed and with an audible catch in her throat, White revealed a hidden family history of the sleep disorder, which made this allegation of cheating particularly "harmful and hurtful." "I know that I did nothing wrong and sought no advantage over my competitors," she said. "I have never taken any substance to enhance my performance." advertisement
