Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History MARATHON Although it has roots in Greek legend, the marathon is one of the most modern of races. The legend grew up around a famous battle that took place in 490 B.C., when Athenian troops defeated a large Persian invasion force on the plain of Marathon, about 25 miles from Athens. According to Herodotus, the Athenians sent a military courier named Phidippides (or Pheidippides or Philippides) to request help from Sparta. He covered the distance, about 150 miles, in less than two days. About 600 years later, the legend arose that Phidippides had been sent to Athens to bring news of the victory at Marathon. After reaching the city, he said, "Rejoice, we conquer," and then died of the exertionor so the story went. The legend is almost certainly untrue, but it was generally believed in the late 19th century. One believer was French historian and linguist Michele Breal. As plans took shape for the first modern Olympics at Athens in 1896, Breal proposed re-enacting Phidippides' legendary run. He even offered to put up a silver trophy for the winner. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, embraced the idea enthusiastically, as did the Athenian organizers. So a 40-kilometer (24.8-mile) race called the marathon was the final, climactic event at the 1896 Olympics.

Olympic Discovery Trail
Status Report: February 4, 2002
Prepared by Rich James Clallam County has been very successful in leveraging a small amount of local trail funding to compete for federal and state trail building dollars. In the time period from 1995 through the end of 2001 almost 73% of trail funding had come from federal or state sources. In the years 2000, 2001 and 2003 Clallam County received a series of federal grants that provided 100% federal funding for construction of the Olympic Discovery Trail. These grants will provide Clallam County with the opportunity to complete a majority of the trail system connecting Blyn, Sequim, Port Angeles and Forks
within the next ten year time period. Clallam County will emerge from this decade with a non-motorized trail system that rivals the quality and safety of its motorized transportation system. A growing number of Clallam County residents living near urban areas are already beginning to enjoy the newfound ability to safely commute to work and shop downtown utilizing a traffic separated trail instead of their cars. Growth in this trend can provide a small measure of congestion relief to the busy Highway 101 corridor. The background of the Olympic Discovery Trail project begins with the construction of the first railroad grades in Clallam County since much of the route is located on historic railroad grades. The Seattle, Port Angeles and Western Railway lines were laid between Port Angeles and Discovery Bay in 1914 and 1915. At Discovery Bay, the Seattle, Port Angeles and Western Railway lines tied into the Port Townsend and Southern lines built in 1887.

PERMANENT EXHIBITION In the Virtual Viren Running Simulator the museum guests can join the famous final lap of the 5,000-metre final at the Montreal Olympic Games of 1976 - and perhaps beat our champion Lasse Viren. At Kino Nurmi, the video theatre of the Sports Museum, the museum guests can watch clips from the greatest moments of Finnish sports. A separate video program presents the history of Finnish motor sports.
The gilded shoe of Paavo Nurmi Paavo Nurmi (born 13 June 1897, died 2 October 1973) was the greatest long-distance runner of all time. He won a total of nine gold and three silver medals at three Olympic Games in the 1920's. The gilded shoe of Paavo Nurmi is the most famous exhibit of the Sports Museum. The spike shoe was gilded for the 1939 New York World's Fair. It was put on display in the Finnish Pavilion in order to promote the 1940 Olympic Games in Helsinki. These Games were cancelled due to the Second World War, however. Paavo Nurmi donated the gilded shoe to the Sports Museum in 1943, when the Museum was opened in its present location at the Olympic Stadium.
