The Norwegian's triumph adds to the three golds he won at Albertville in 1992 and the two he collected at Lillehammer four years ago. Skiing in steady rain at the Snow Harp course, Daehlie crossed the finish line in 27 minutes 24.5 seconds while Austria's Markus Gandler, eight seconds slower, won the silver. Finland's Mika Myllylae, winner of the 30K race on Monday, collected the bronze in 27:40.1. Daehlie had a disaster in the 30k race on Monday, finishing in 20th after putting the wrong wax on his skis. However he got it right this time and led from the start. By the first checkpoint at 1.8 kilometers he was 6.3 seconds faster than the closest challenger in the 97-strong field and he never let that lead slip. In a fine show of sportsmanship, Daehlie postponed his celebrations until Philip Boit, the only Kenyan at the games, finished the course.

Rugby in Georgia The Georgians were part of the USSR's rugby organisation though its own rugby union had been founded in 1964. At the time of peristroika, in 1988, the secretary of the union David Kilasonia approached the International Rugby Board about recognition of a union independent from the USSR. Georgia, a poor country, then banded with other FIRA countries to bring Zimbabwe to Europe. Zimbabwe's first match on the tour was in the wet against Georgia in Kutaisi in the fertile area west of Tbilisi. Georgia won 16-3. In fact Zimbabwe played and lost six matches on the tour. The next year Georgia took itself - and its massive prop Vissaria Liluashvili - down to Zimbabwe. They played two tests, losing the first in Bulawayo when Zivanai Dzinomurumbi scored two tires for the home side - and winning the second 26-10 in Harare when the young lock Rapava Gia dominated the line-outs and Alecko Khvedelidze and Nurbt Khuade each scored a brace of tries. Zimbabwe had been to the 1987 Rugby World Cup and would go to the 1991 one as well. Georgia was a rugby nation. But getting matches was not easy. It was limited to Ukraine until it gained membership of the IRB on 27 February 1992.

Coca-Cola, MasterCard and other multi-national companies invest vast sums to capture a global audience through sport. All nations, it seems, are desperate to compete at the highest level on the world stage. But is it that simple? Have we really arrived at a time in history where we can talk about a commonly understood series of global games? France has a specialand neglectedplace in this story. For it was the French, rather than the British, who took the lead in organising sport as a global phenomenon. The centenary of a Frenchman's re-invention of the ancient Olympic Games took place in 1996, and 2004 will see the centenary of the founding in France of the Federation Internationale de Football (FIFA), which devised and runs the World Cup. This year, the third largest sporting event in the world, the Tour de France, will be a hundred years old. The founders of the Tour, however, never intended it to be international, let alone global. It was specifically designed as a vehicle for French nationalism. Despite its huge commercial success, the Tour de France has only recentlyand still imperfectlyassumed the status of a global event. Historically, France is both the supreme exemplar of sporting internationalism and a powerful reminder of its peculiarities, limitations and complexities.
