HISTORY OF THE GAMES 1976
The Modern Olympics
1976 Montreal, Canada

6,085 athletes, 92 nations For the first time in Olympic History the Games were held in Canada. But serious financial and administrative problems put a damper on the Montreal Olympics. Montreal mayor Jean Drapeau had promised the Games would not cost taxpayers anything. Initially he said they would have a price tag of $124 million. When the organizing committee started to study the budget they realized it would cost at least $310 million. In the end the figure was closer to $1.5 billion. Click for Olympic posters There were also some political problems surrounding the Games. Tawain withdrew from the Games because of disputes with China and some African nations boycotted the Games because they were angered by New Zealand's rugby tours in apartheid South Africa.

Our Past
On 10th December 1985, 120 original members were inducted into The Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF). Sir Donald Bradman was the first inductee. As at December 2003, The Sport Australia Hall of Fame had 328 Members and 128 Associate Members. The Sport Australia Hall of Fame exists to recognise and promote the outstanding sporting achievements of Australians. The Hall honours these great Australians. It does so to preserve and perpetuate Australia’s rich sporting life and heritage as an inspiration to all Australians. Membership of SAHOF is limited exclusively to the top echelon of athletes. They have all achieved excellence at the highest level within their sport. Selection to the Hall by their peers is the pinnacle of achievement for Australian sportspeople. In 1989 the Hall was expanded to include Associate Members. Associates are selected for excellence and outstanding achievements in roles supportive to sports participants. The Legend status was developed to more fully highlight and promote the achievements of our sporting champions. We have now honoured twenty two members as Legends of Australian sport. These are: Sir Donald Bradman, Dawn Fraser, Sir Hubert Opperman, Betty Cuthbert, A. “Jock” Sturrock, Evonne (Goolagong) Cawley, Edgar “Dunc” Gray, E.J. “Ted” Whitten, Shirley (Strickland) de la Hunty, Arthur “Scobie” Breasley, Reg Gasnier, Marjorie (Jackson) Nelson, Shane (Gould) Innes, “Vic” Patrick, Bill Roycroft, Herb Elliott, Walter Lindrum, Margaret Court, Murray Rose, Heather McKay, Peter Thomson, Rod Laver, and Sir Jack Brabham.

THE HOUSTON ATHLETIC RUGBY CLUB
HARC
was formed on July 17, 1998 by the merger of the Houston Rugby Football Club and the Houston Old Boys Rugby Football Club. These clubs joined to leverage their strengths and promote rugby in the Houston area. HARC is a member club of the Texas Rugby Union, the Western Rugby Football Union and the United States of America Rugby Football Union. The Club supports youth, high school and collegiate rugby development in Houston. THE TEAM FORMERLY KNOWN AS HOUSTON RFC In 1969, Nat Davis (later to become President of Gerald Hines and currently found at the Houston Polo Club) figured his rugby days were over. He had returned to Houston after graduating from Notre Dame in 1964, where he had been captain of the rugby team, and after spending another 4 years in the Navy where he played for the Olympic Club in the Northern California Rugby Union. One afternoon, however, while driving through Memorial Park he happened upon John Savage (a South African) who was practicing kicking a rugby ball. After trading experiences they decided that there might be more players interested in forming a team.

Brief history of the Rugby World Cup
Posted: Wednesday October 8, 2003 7:15PM; Updated: Wednesday October 8, 2003 7:15PM
LONDON (Reuters) Despite featuring three times at the Olympic Games (the United States remain the champions after successfully defending their title at the 1924 Paris Games), rugby union was the last major sport to get round to organizing a World Cup. The impetus in the early 1980s came from the southern hemisphere, the power base of the game, with initial resistance from the historically conservative British unions who already staged the highly successful Five Nations championship and feared that a World Cup would be the first step towards professionalism. By 1984 both New Zealand and Australia had presented proposals and a feasibility study was approved at a meeting of the International Rugby Board in the following year. New Zealand were named primary hosts along with Australia for the tournament, which was scheduled for 1987. Sixteen countries were invited but South Africa, still in international isolation because of its apartheid policies, was excluded. Australia had been the form team of the previous year. However, New Zealand, still in turmoil after the unofficial Cavaliers' tour to South Africa in 1986, had almost by accident discovered a group of youngsters destined to become all-time greats.

Message-ID: Nntp-Posting-Host: sss330.canterbury.ac.nz Organization: Department of Mathematics, University of Canterbury Date: Tue, 5 Oct 1993 01:36:59 GMT There have been a large number of "I-seem-to-recall-reading-about-this" posts. Here at last is some genuine info about this olympic rugby matter, straight from "The Guiness Book of Rugby Records", which I have *here* in my office, alongside the keyboard, right now ! It has been laboriously typed in by me, for the benefit of all, (kindly send donations to the address below). [irrelevant comments deleted]
OLYMPIC RUGBY
Introduced by Baron Pierre de Coubertin (who refereed the first ever French championship final), rugby was on the Olympic program at Paris in 1900, at London in 1908, Antwerp in 1920, and Paris again in 1924. In 1928 the I.O.C. turned down the request to stage rugby at the Amsterdam games. Three factors were believed to be behind this: the IOC wanted more emphasis on individual sports; women's athletics had swollen the number of competitors; and the sport did not receive the backing that it should have from the British entries. Both the Soviet Union in 1980 and South Korea in 1988 made attempts to have rugby readmitted, and it should be pointed out that South Korea came desparately close to achieving their aim. Canadian skier Beckie Scott has become the first athlete to win gold, silver and bronze medals in one Olympic event.
She took bronze for the 5km cross country in 2002, but has been awarded the other medals because their initial recipients failed drugs tests. Scott said: "To say I'm an Olympic gold medallist now is the greatest honour. "It's truly a historical moment for our sport and I'm just thrilled with the result. The little guy won out finally and the right thing was done." Scott was upgraded to a silver medal earlier this year when the International Olympic Committee disqualified Russian Larissa Lazutina. And she claimed gold when another Russian, Olga Danilova, was stripped of her medal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Thursday.
