http://collections.ic.gc.ca/HandCraftTrade/textiles/rug_hooking.html
Rugs have been made in the Maritimes since Europeans first settled here. There is evidence to suggest that rugs were made in Great Britain during the eighteenth century and it is known that rugs were made in Nova Scotia in the nineteenth century. Rug hooking came from thrumming, which is a process in which yarn (thrum) is inserted into canvas. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the craft was already well developed, but by the end of the century the art of homemade rugs was in decline because of the availability of commercially made rugs. There are two tools needed for rug hooking: a frame and a hook. The hook, which is used for pulling the nap (surface cloth) up through the backing, is similar to a heavy crochet hook. Hooks of the nineteenth century were made from a thin nail inserted into a wooden handle. The point of the nail was rounded and then barbed. The frame consisted of four wooden slats. Canvas was tacked to the two longest slats and the backing for the rug was sewn to it. Some rug hookers also attached the rug to the smaller sides of the frame with yarn. Iron clamps were used to hold the frame together in a rectangle shape and it was set on wooden legs so that the rug hooker could sit down to work. The backing that was used for rugs was almost exclusively made of burlap from old feed bags. These were easy to get and the burlap was strong. Weak burlap could seriously shorten the life of a rug.

Link to the Workshop Registration Form The name Old Fashioned Hooking (also sometimes called Nantucket Hooking) distinguishes this craft from other types of hooking, such as Australian locker hooking, and latch hooking. A special crochet hook in a wooden handle is used to bring yarn up from underneath the backing. Hooked items are beautiful, whether using soft, kempy, or hairy yarns, and provide a wonderful outlet for beginning spinners and accomplished fiber artists as well. We will design and make a hooked piece suitable to cover a footstool or be made into a pillow top. Using single ply yarns and design elements from nature, the home, or the students' imaginations, each piece will be unique. Projects not completed in class can easily be finished later using skills taught in the workshop. Materials Fee: includes background yarn, foundation burlap, wooden frame, supplies. Students Bring: Rug hook (or can be purchased from the instructor for about $15); patterning yarns of your choice, at least 4 oz., can be handspun or other singles yarns approximating worsted weight; scissors, design ideas, fearless creativity.

Old Fashioned Felt Rug Hooking Two years ago, while at a local historic fair, I had the opportunity to get a quick lesson in this old time art. Fortunately, the woman (whose name I sadly cannot remember) spoke my language: use what you've got. First, you need burlap. I cut a burlap bag I had that once contained Basmati rice. Tape the edges of the burlap with masking tape so that it does not fray. Decide a simple pattern and draw it onto the burlap. Cut strips of felt in the colours that you need. I cut my strips at about a half inch wide, give or take. To do the hooking, I used a crochet hook. To begin, start at one side or corner of your rug. Hold the strip under the burlap with one hand. Poke through the top of the burlap with crochet hook and pull up an end of your felt strip. Once the end is showing on the top, you begin to bring up loops of felt as shown in pictures. Do not remove the masking tape. I made a small pumpkin wall hang but the woman I had met was making small throw rugs, pillows, and burlap dolls with felt hair. RETURN to Felt Crafts

RUGMAKING:
Introduction
Punching, Hooking: a word about the difference. Both techniques produce the same finished rug surface. Punching (or tufting) punches loops down into a canvas backing. Hooking pulls loops up through the backing. Punch from the back, hook from the front. Either way, the yarn is continuous, so the pile is composed of loops. LATEX RUG BACKING (Mold Builder is the same stuff)
Paint on rug back to hold loops or tufts in place, and to make a skid-proof surface. One pint (16 oz) will cover approximately 15 square feet of rug. 4-in-1 PUNCH NEEDLE KIT
The four points (sizes 2, 3, 5, 6) are interchangeable. Comfortable wooden handle with short loop adapter.
RUG HOOKING TOOL
Wooden handle, steel hook. Four sizes.
LATCH HOOK TOOL
Latch Hooking produces a cut-piled surface on a woven backing, using separate pre-cut lengths of yarn, knotted into the mesh of the backing — the resulting pile is made of little tufts, with cut ends, rather than loops. Our latch hook has a wooden handle, 7" long.
LOCKER HOOK TOOL Locker Hooking is a less well-known technique from Australia. Uses a special hook to make a series of loops that are then locked in placed by a strand on the surface of the backing. Can be done with unspun fiber, yarn, rags. See the book "Australian Locker Hooking", with the Rug Making Books. Our looker hook is nickel-plated.
