Coutts Memorial Museum of Art
El Dorado, KS The Art of Rug Hooking "T he Art of Rug Hooking . . . El Dorado and area artists" will be on display at the Coutts Museum of Art through September 27, 2000. A special reception for the artists and a public viewing will be held at the museum Saturday, September 9 from noon - 2:00 p.m. Many people have long seen and admired hooked rugs without the least idea of how they are made. It has only been recently that rug hooking has received the long-overdue recognition from museums, galleries and the public it deserves as a rich part of our heritage. But more importantly, not only is appreciation growing for hooked pieces made in the folk art tradition but the craft itself is being revived as a means of self-expression. (left: Marge Ward, Mother Goose, wool hooked rug, 1997) Rug hooking reached a creative peak in early nineteenth-century America (in both New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces), although both skilled and unskilled hookers were handicapped by a basic lack of materials and had to rely on their ingenuity. Before the availability of burlap (after 1850), feed sacks were frequently used as foundation material. The fabric to be hooked into the foundation came primarily from clothing no longer usable; the materials were washed, sorted and then colored in homemade dyes extracted from local plants (golden rod, sumac, sunflowers, wild grapes, walnuts and other plants). The dyed materials were then cut into narrow strips to be worked into the foundation using hooks made from nails, bone handled forks, or whatever else was available.

Compositions in Wool
Works by the Piedmont Rug Hookers
The Friends of the Carrboro Branch Library and the Orange County Arts Commission present Compositions in Wool - Works by the Piedmont Rug Hookers at the Carrboro Branch Library at McDougle Middle School.
The Piedmont Rug Hookers are a chapter of the Association of traditional Rug Hooking Artists and are a non-profit guild devoted to the promotion of the art of rug hooking.
The show includes beautiful and unique rugs and wall hangings, individually created from strips of dyed wool flannel that have been hooked into a backing of cotten, linen, or burlap.
At the April 25th reception, artists demonstrated the various aspects involved in the process of rug making, and were on hand to answer questions about their craft.
Karen Poetzinger, President of the Piedmont Rug Hookers, demonstrated the process from start to finish, and is shown here with Ave Maria and 5-year-old Sofia Dimas, helping her cut the wool into strips with a cutting maching. Various widths of fabric can be cut, depending on the look you are attempting to achieve with the piece. Some hookers dye the fabric themselves while others opt for fabric that has already been dyed at purchase.
Shown at work on a piece here is Jane Harris. Jane is one of the more proliferate members, producing stunningly beautiful pieces at a rapid rate. A pattern is traced onto the backing and a hook that looks like a crochet hook with a handle attached, is used to pull the fabric through the backing, creating a loop. Using the right amount of tension so the loop is as high as the fabric is wide achieves a balanced, uniform look to the piece. Spacing of the loops is also crucial in the overall outcome of each piece.
