If you are interested in having a rug hooked, please EMAIL me with your inquiry. I can design and hook a rug especially for you, or I can hook a rug of any commercially available pattern that you might choose. I work in primitive wool cuts (1/4-inch and larger). I don't do fine shaded hooking, but if you love the antique primitive look with lots of textures and an aged feel, that's what I do best! Interested? Let's talk! ©2003, 2004 Sally Van Nuys-Brown, All rights reserved. Click on photo to view enlargement Heavenly Hearts Hooked Rug See Antique Hooked Rugs here! Pattern also available to hook your own. I hooked this design in a primitive cut for a vintage feel, but the colors are slightly more contemporary for a bit of whimsy. There are bits of raw wool hooked into the wings to give a softness and texture to them. See the enlarged photo for a better look. The rounded top corners give the illusion of a tombstone top, but they are actually just hooked into the rectangular shape of the rug. I really enjoyed designing and hooking this rug. Measures 14 x 20 inches.

Recently, she has taken a keen interest in rug hooking using hand dyed wool. She creates original patterns and only the best of materials. The background on this page was created from her very first project which I am very proud to say she gave to me as one of my treasured memories of our Minnesota weekend in December, 1996. It is about ten inches square with a loft of about a half-inch. It looks terrific on our dining room table under whatever centerpiece the season calls for.

Thank you, Sheila Klugescheid Well recognized rug Design of Heartland Creations) What is Rug Hooking There are many theories about the origin of Rug Hooking. Some believe that it dates back to the medieval days where rugs were used as bed coverings, others believe that it started with the Egyptians or, even the craft has its roots in the Orient. Where ever or how ever old, the one thing that most everyone will agree on is, that it got its start on this continent by about the 1800's in the Maritimes and New England. The art of Rug Hooking was a great pastime for sea faring men at sea to while away time and for women settlers to cover cold earth floors in very early homes. These rugs where created by drawing a pattern on feed sacs and then they would cut old worn out clothing into strips and use a hook fashioned out of an old knife or nail to pull the strips up through the back of the sack to form a looped pile.

I grew up in Freshwater, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, the youngest of seven children. My mother and both of my grandmothers hooked rugs as a past time, and as a chore of necessity. By the time I was born by my grandmothers had died and my mother had long since abandoned rug hooking as a chore of poverty. In Newfoundland in the late sixties, and early seventies very few people were hooking, though there was still a scattered mat hanging about peoples back doors. For the most part it was out with the old and in with the new. I can still see a Rita Murphy, my friends mother, sitting in her back room, hooking away on her mats. Her floors were a carpet of many multicoloured hooked rugs. At the time to me it seemed an old fashioned thing. Little did I know that I would spend years doing exactly the same thing.

Origins of Traditional rug hooking. He wrote three carefully researched, well illustrated informative books on rug hooking now unfortunately out-of-print.
    http://www.wcushing.com/rug_hooking_origins.htm
Origins of Traditional Rug Hooking by Joan Moshimer NOTE: By the term "Rug Hooking" we mean the craft which employs a simple hook and strips of fabric - the strips cut from worn out clothing, curtains, etc. which was developed to give them new and useful life. The hook in one hand above the foundation material and the strip held beneath in the other hand, the hook begins pulling up loops from the strip which when repeated many times close together forms the surface of a rug. A distinguished American architect and scholar in the 1920s and 30s, William Winthrop Kent became interested in the hooked rugs of the humble housewives living in the New England states and neighboring provinces of the Canadian Maritimes, recognizing that he was looking at an art form with much distinction and potential. He wrote three carefully researched, well illustrated informative books on rug hooking - now unfortunately out-of-print. In the first, called THE HOOKED RUG, he set himself the task of finding out just when and where rug hooking began. The earliest evidence of the craft that he could find can be seen in a photograph on page 6 of his book, showing a small mat dating from the 6th century that is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This basic form of hooking apparently was practiced by the Copts from the 3rd to the 7th century AD. The Copts were descended from the ancient Egyptians. From his description of the Coptic process it seems as if their work was remarkably similar to our present day hooking. They made a fabric "which was based on the appreciation of the artistic possibilities of loops of colored wool left standing above the surface of the basic material"
