SPLASH!
The Materials Science Project
Meeting Minutes Friday, June 15th
The program is finished and will be installed on Ms. Nowak's computer. Tuesday, May 15th
The program, though incomplete, was shown at the CS92 party. Work will continue on the program until it is finished. Friday, May 10th
The decision has been made to port the program to Director. Tuesday, May 8th
Today, we gave a demo to the class of our current work. Because the connectivity of the program isn't yet finished, the program had to be presented in different parts. Comments from the class were made and will be taken into account. Because the Shockwave functionality is still not compatible, the program may have to be ported from Authorware to Director. Tuesday, April 10th
We met before class with Nancy Nowak to discuss our questions and ideas. Nancy read over our proposed questions and made some corrections and suggestions. Basically, most of the questions were VERY high level for her students, but the material is proving to be particularly hard to test without incorporating vocabulary specific to materials science, and science in general. The question topics were separated into variables, scientific method, polymers, composites, metals, ceramics, properties, weight, and thickness, although Richard found it useful to combine topics, such as how an alloy is similar to a composite.

82. AP Chemistry
At the end of the year students will have the opportunity to do the Chemical RubeGoldberg project. I have video of these projects for the past two years.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT CHEMISTRY
The intent of AP Chemistry is to provide you with the opportunity to acquire college credit while attending Austin High School. Therefore, the expectations exceed those of ordinary high school classes. The following information will help you succeed in AP Chemistry.
  • All polyatomic ions must be memorized. You may check out an AP textbook for the summer by bringing me a check for $46.00.. Bring the book back on the first day and you will get the check. Chapters 1-4 must be read over the summer. While reading, I would suggest you work the example and practice problems. Bring questions over this material to class on the first day and we will go over the material. I will begin the year with Chapter 5. If you want to get ahead, read more chapters during the summer when you have the time. Each student will need a TI-82, TI-83 or other TI graphing calculator. The calculator will be used in conjunction with a CBL (Calculator Based Lab) instrument and various other probes. A new computer tutorial program will be discussed at the beginning of the year. It is called ChemSkill Builder. It will cost each student approximately $20.00 to have a disk for their home use.

5th Grade Letters
I took a personal day on Tuesday to be out at camp with the counselors. My substitute teacher was switched at the last minute, so I thought up a simpler lesson plan to give to the substitute substitute. I just had the 5th graders write short little notes to their teachers. I didn't, however, anticipate being blessed by my own assignment! Here is a selection of some of the notes I received:
Thank you for teaching me computer. I am happy that my WPM have gone up.

The best part of the year is when I am with people that take care of me. you have been one of those people.
Elena
I'm glad I got to be in your class and I hope I see you lots next year and we will have just as much fun. I will always remember the laughs we had. You are so funny.
Abigail
Dear Mr. Webel,
I really liked when we played Bible Jeopardy and the other fun games. I hope you have a great year and summer.

Making Marble-Action Games, Gadgets, Mazes and Contraptions: Designs for 10 Outlandish, Ingenious and Intricate Woodworking Projects > Customer Review #1: OK for ideas, but not for projects

I was disappointed as well. I expected projects I could build, but nothing struck me as worth the time. The basic ideas are OK, marble rollers, and so on. But I would only use this stuff as a departure point for my own designs.

I am Jennifer Shirey, a senior at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Virginia. I grew up in the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia where my father is a doctor and my mother has worked as a librarian at the local elementary school. I have a younger sister who is currently a freshman at Marshall University studying Biology/Zoology. I was actively involved in my high school’s marching band, 4-H, Girl Scouts, and dance. I have continued to remain active in 4-H, Girl Scouts, and dance in college as well as join the Student Senate, Student Service Board, and work-study at the college’s pool. I decided to go into education after my first summer home from college. I worked as a Volunteer Camping Assistant for WVU’s 4-H Extension Service. I spent the summer traveling around the state of West Virginia working week-long 4-H camps for 8 to 21 year olds. I was put into a leadership role in front of these children and found that I really enjoyed teaching others. It was not surprising due to my mother formally teaching middle school mathematics and an aunt who teaches elementary physical education.

Project 2 (Shoot the Moon)
Well project two is over! Until tomarrow, then I find out how much I screwed this TIM up, and how many corrections are needed. Any how, I was asked to post three things that I liked about the second project, three things that I didliked about project two, and then three things that I feel David should do differently for the final project.
1. I enjoyed subject. I enjoyed meeting the helpful man in the park. I enjoyed the explosion on launch day.
2. I did not enjoy repeating projects (launching a water balloon, egg) I did not enjoy having one of my fellow students freaking out and in return causing me to freak out. I did not enjoy having 100% knowledge of what is expected on this TIM (yes I know this is my own fault).

Courses Currently Teaching World of Technology class This is a class we developed for the entering freshmen. It is an exploratory class that allows for many hands on experiences that develop the students problem solving abilities and gives them an opportunity to work both individually and in small groups. The course is divided into four different areas that we feel reflect the world of technology. The areas are ; Transportation, Construction, Communication and Manufacturing. I teach the construction technology quadrant of this introduction course. The students will be with me for two, four week sessions. The first session they discover some of the ways building materials are manufactured and what are some ways of strengthening them. They also learn about the forces that act on structures (e.g. gravity, compression, torsion, tension, shearing). They will also be have an opportunity to learn some basic CAD functions. The second four week session the students will be introduced to both traditional and non-traditional structures and building techniques. They will pursue different activities including creating a framing plan on CAD, building a scale model of a residential structure, watching videos of non-traditional building processes and researching and creating a PowerPoint presentation on some non-traditional structures. Introduction to Engineering class - This class is designed for students who are planning to enter the engineering profession. It is a
