TKC Archives May 30, 2003 Families are gathering together this spring in a tradition that brings generations together for a day, a weekend, or more. Andy and Mary Bronzan, who, until recently, resided in Three Rivers, hosted the Bronzan Family Reunion during Memorial Day weekend. The group went out to dinner Saturday evening, then the family reconvened Sunday at Plaza Park in Visalia for games and a barbecue. The Bronzan family has been holding annual reunions for over 60 years. May 23, 2003 For 25 years, the Conley family has met at the Lazy J Ranch Motel in Three Rivers for their annual family reunion. This year, the annual gathering was held Saturday, May 17. The Oscar Conley family consisted of 15 children. The family came to Porterville from Oklahoma in the 1940s. The majority of the Conley kids graduated from Porterville High School.

The goal in fifth grade English is to help children become more confident, thoughtful readers and expressive and versatile writers. Reading instruction is built largely around chapter books or novels, with a careful examination of character, setting, plot, and theme through both discussion and writing. Short stories, myths, poetry, and nonfiction are also read, and many selections are tied to learning in social studies. Students are encouraged to make and share personal reading choices through a year-long independent reading project. A variety of writing experiences, including stories, essays, journals, retellings and poems, give children opportunities to take their talents as writers in different directions. Spelling, grammar, and vocabulary building are taught as subskills which support growth as readers and writers.

Several years ago, Ms. Skinner and her fellow teachers at Ottewell School made it a priority to teach their students a number of the thinking skills developed by the psychologist Edward De Bono. Based on their experience, they have pared these down to about half a dozen basic techniques that they teach at logical points throughout the curriculum. Below she describes some of the learning tools and the context in which they are used at her school.
Teaching science the Ottewell way
The Ottewell science program packages integrate the provincial science curriculum and the thinking skills we derived from Edward De Bono. Teams from the various grade levels create and then constantly improve the packages. Our first priority in unit-planning is to make the lessons fun, relevant and easy. Consistently addressing all learning styles is also an important goal. We use a wide range of approaches (e.g. analogies, models, diagrams and activities) to make scientific concepts as concrete as possible and we follow a logical pattern of interconnected learning to attach new learning to old. For students, the primary benefit of the program is that they are involved in their own learning. We make it clear to them that they are expected to achieve their personal best. Given high standards for achievement and behaviour, they are made aware that they are responsible for and in control of both. We show students that they already know most of the science curriculum from experience in their daily lives; we are just helping them develop a greater awareness and learn some technical terms to help them communicate efficiently.

The neon sign is an inextricable part of the urban landscape whose beginnings go back over seventy years. Once used solely to draw attention to diners, bars, theatres and the like, today examples of signage from the thirties through the sixties are exhibited in art galleries. This is an example of advertising illustration developed under a craft ethic being redefined as 'functional art.' In contrast to its use in displays, several fine artists over the last 30 years have used neon as an art medium. Larry Albright is one of these artists. His work has been shown in major exhibitions and is in permanent collections worldwide. Aside from his artistic work with plasma globes and neon sculpture, he is known for his development of the mass produced "Eye of the Storm" and "White Lightning" plasma globes developed for the consumer market and for his lighting designs for the movie industry. What I do!
I teach mathematics and science at Captial High School and precalculus, Statistics and Physics at The Evergreen State College . I have been involved as a trainer in a number of staff development leadership situations. I have developed and taught in-service teacher courses through the: Olympia School District , Chehalis School District, ESD 113 ESD 121 , ESD 114, ESD 189 TESC the Evergreen Center for Educational Improvement NCCE , SLICE, Lewiston SD, among others. I have presented at the conferences of: NCCE NCTM NSTA , WSTA, NWMC, WSSDA, WSSPA, Apple Computer , and various school districts around the Northwest. At the local level through the national level, I have reviewed grant proposals, developed curriculum, set educational guidelines, coordinated and chaired conferences and written grant proposals. I have submitted manuscripts for publication and have been published in: The Science Teacher, the Washington State Science Teacher Journal, the Computing Teacher and the World Wide Web. I am an adjunct faculty with Seattle Pacific University. I have received technology awards from NSTA (TAPESTRY), Tandy (Tandy Technology Scholar) and Apple Computer (Apple Distinguished Educator).

CHEMICAL RUBE GOLDBERG PROJECT
The criteria for the 1999 projects listed below. PROBLEM: Through a series of energy exchanges in a time closest to 3 minutes the machine will produce a gas causing a change in the color of a solution.
CRITERIA:
  • Each machine will have a minimum of 10 energy exchanges; at least 5 of these changes will be chemical and 5 will be physical. If the same energy exchanges are used, point deduction will be considered. The time requirement for the problem to be accomplished is 3 minutes. The energy used to start the machine will not be considered as one of the energy exchanges in the machine. Points will be deducted for excess stored energy (i.e. batteries). Points will be added for the use of alternative energy sources. Points will be given for a creativity to the problem solution.

SAFETY: A preliminary written schematic design will be submitted to be approved. Students will be required to calculate and/or determine the quantitative information concerning any reaction being considered in the machine. After the initial study of the involved reactions have been completed and approved, lab tests may be run. All tests will be using small amounts of chemicals.

Beginning in January, the Post will be having a series of outings at other local companies and see other types of Engineering in action. The following towns are represented by the Explorer Post membership Rube Goldberg Project: Electronic Construction Project: Explorers in this project are getting the chance to do a lot of "hands on" construction of electronic circuits. They started out with the basics of how to safely use the tools such as wire cutters and soldering irons. Then on to learning how to read an engineering drawing, schematic, parts list and assembly procedure. They experimented with a number of simple circuits to learn about electronic components: how to distinguish a diode from a capacitor; how to tell the value of a resistor, how to tell the polarity of an LED (light emitting diode).
