Right now, it sits in my drawer, ready to be used whenever I want to add an extra, personal touch to a letter, envelope, or scrapbook page. You can do the same with a stamp made of your image or that of a loved one. My husband and I were visiting our friend, Bill Gaglione, owner of a stamp company in San Francisco. Bill took us to a black-and-white photo booth in a penny arcade. We hammed it up for the camera, sometimes posing on our own, sometimes together, and out came a series of funny face shots. As you can imagine, some of the photos were pretty bad, while others looked just fine. That was 20 years ago, and my stamp still works well today. The image looks (pretty much) like me, and it always reminds me of San Francisco, and our great time together at the penny arcade.

If you're looking for a specific technique, EDIT and FIND the word you're looking for. Many techniques are listed at numerous different sites, so after you've looked at one, come back here to look at the others. If you don't find what you're looking for, it is bound to be at the Cloud 9 or the rubberstampsclub.com links towards the top of the list. I will continue to add links as I become aware of them.
If you have a class, tip or technique you'd like me to add to this list, email me with the complete URL and description. I only want to post instruction links that are expected to be online indefinitely. I won't list temporary classes because I'll never remember to remove the dead links!! Please make CERTAIN before sending it that it's not already here. I don't want to duplicate links and it could be time consuming for me to figure out every time someone sends me a link. If one of the links below has changed addresses and you happen to have it, please e-mail me the new URL.

Try attaching a bow or button on top of where you put your adhesive. Or, you a corner slot punch to hold the vellum in place. Make a matching envelope with your card! Use the same stamps and colors used on your card and stamp a border on the front or back of the envelope. Or, stamp a single larger image on the back flap. So many different ways to do it and it's very impressive!

I find that the matrix trays are my favorite tools for use with polymer clay, and I use them more than the rubber stampsalthough those are great too! Using rubber stamps with polymer clay is a wonderful way to add interesting design elements, either by making an impression, or by using the stamps to apply powders, or paints. My new book "Create A Polymer Clay Impression" (Krause Publications2001) focuses on the wide rande of uses for polymer clay and rubber stamps, and features stamps made at Ready-Stamps. Here's how it works You start with the artwork. You can use original drawings in pen and ink, computer graphic printouts, (the example on this page is a type font called "fleurons" manipulated with a simple graphics program) or photocopiesthis allows you to play with scale as well. Reducing designs can make quite a difference.

    Mounting Your Own
How to Broaden Your Stamp Budget
Mounting your own stamps may seem like a big undertaking, but basically if you can make a sandwich without spilling peanut butter and jelly all over the counter, you should be able to manage putting rubber together . Mounting your own can save you TONS and all that extra savings can be turned into even more rubber which you can mount yourself and save some more money, into infinity.
    The Basic Stamp
There are several different mounting systems available these days, from the plain and simple expedient of using the nearest jar lid, to cutting your own wood mounts from select hardwood and lovingly sanding and varnishing them yourself until your hand mounted stamps are a work of art in themselves. In this tutorial we'll explore several different ways to mount stamps, but first let's review the construction of your typical wood mounted stamp. Illustration 1 will show you how a typical stamp is mounted. Rubber, cushion and wood mount all sandwiched together to form one unit. This is the typical way in which most stampers mount their own.

    Cushion
Cushion can come in many forms and thicknesses (typically 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4") , can be red, grey, or black and can be purchased from several sources, though it is not as easily found as rubber. It is constructed of varying densities of foam rubber. Usually it is sold in sheets, often 8 1/2 X 11, though larger sizes are often available. It is available with or without adhesive on one side or both. If you do not purchase self sticking cushion, rubber cement makes an excellent adhesive. I've experimented with several different materials and have found that commercial cushion seems to be your best bet. In a pinch, the thin layers of foam sold in craft stores as

  • F.W. Dorman is said to have been the first to actually commercialize the making of rubber stamps. He started as a sixteen-year-old traveling stencil salesman in St. Louis, Missouri, and opened his first business in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1865. He learned the technique of manufacturing rubber stamps from an inventor. His eventual specialty was the manufacture of the basic tool of the trade - the vulcanizer (the process of making such a stamp). His company continues in business today.
  • The early days of rubber stamps were designed so folks could affix a red marking for proof purpose, such as the Post Office stamping "1st Class" on envelopes. Later, more designs were destined for offices for stamping paperwork. Rubber stamping did not become a mainstream hobby until the early 1980s. Stamps made by companies that went out of business are sought-after and very difficult to find. Several new companies emerged and became "famous" for their trademark artwork such as dog breeds or Christmas themes. They often hired established artists to draw designs for them, either on a full-time or freelance basis. These artists create stamps from their personal experiences.

Paper takes up more space in landfills than any other type of trash, so recycling it is very important. Besides extending the life of landfills, recycling paper saves trees, conserves the energy needed to make new paper, and it decreases the pollution caused by its production. In this project, we'll learn about different sources of waste paper and ways to use rubber stamps to recycle the material to make useful items such as bookmarks, tablets, and stickers. The activity will help you save money as well as the environment. When you make a painting or drawing, the finished work is called an original. This one-of-a-kind piece of artwork can't be duplicated by hand. Using rubber stamps to make art or crafts allows you to make copies of an original design, however. Making impressions and duplicating a design in this way is called printmaking. As a fine art, printmaking involves using equipment and materials which aren't available to most people. Rubber stamps are plentiful, relatively inexpensive, and fun to use, so they're a good introduction to this artform.
    You will need:
    • Preconsumer waste paper Ink pads Rubber stamps Colored pencils or Colored markers (optional)
    How to:
There are two kinds of waste paper which can be recycled. Postconsumer waste is made up of materials which have been used by the consumer and then discarded. Examples are newspapers, magazines, and junk mail. While you can recycle postconsumer waste in this activity, we'll concentrate mostly on using preconsumer waste paper. This is composed of scraps, trimmings, and other leftovers which are the byproducts of manufacturing goods. Preconsumer waste paper, then, is created before it reaches the consumer, and it's made as a result of manufacturing another product.

Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1033

Mary O'Neil of Hot Potatoes created some Asian-inspired stamps that are new on the market.
Sunday International created a Celtic line of stamps, ranging in subject from dragonflies to frogs, all drawn in Celtic style.
Magenta Rubber Stamps has recently launched a line of stamps to look like tiles. Linda Ragsdale, a frequent guest on The Carol Duvall Show , carved a stamp of Carol from a product by Speedball that allows buyers to create their own stamps. By Carol Duvall I honestly think we could do a segment every day of the week showing rubber stamps and still not manage to keep up with all of the new ones that are out there. We continue to try, however, because even if you're one of the few remaining people in the world who does NOT rubber stamp, they are often fun to look at. Name a subject, there's a rubber stamp for it! Over the past few years, the Asian look has become popular in many areas of our lives so of course the rubber stampers of the world must reflect this influence. Even our southern belle Mary O'Neil of Hot Potatoes has a line of Japanese-inspired kimono stamps, however, though the kimonos are legitimate I think a bit of Mary's southern sense of humor sneaked into her naming them. There is Madame Dragon Fly, Quasi Mono, Baby Quasi Mono and Yoko Mono!
