Rubber Stamp History
The History of Rubber Stamps
Charles Marie de la Condamine, French scientist and explorer of the scenic Amazon River, had no idea there would ever be such a thing as a rubber stamp when he sent a sample of "India" rubber to the Institute de France in Paris in 1736. Prior to de la Condamine, Spanish explorers had noted that certain South American Indian tribes had a light-hearted time playing ball with a substance that was sticky and bounced, but it failed to rouse their scientific curiosity. Some tribes had found rubber handy as an adhesive when attaching feathers to their person; and the so-called "head-hunting" Antipas, who were fond of tattooing, used the soot from rubber that had been set on fire. They punctured skin with thorns and rubbed in the soot to achieve the desired cosmetic effect. The June 1918 issue of Stamp Trade News indicates that "rubber stamps were made hundreds of years ago...by South American Indians for printing on the body the patterns which they wished to tattoo," but we have been unable to verify this was actually the case. In New Zealand today, a version of such tattooing is making a hit in the form of rubber stamp "skin markers" which bear intricate figures of birds, snakes, flowers, tribal symbols, etc. It wasn't until some thirty-four years after de la Condamine sent his rubber care package home that Sir Joseph Priestley, the discoverer of oxygen, noted: "I have seen a substance excellently adapted to the purpose of wiping from paper the mark of black lead pencil." In 1770 it was a novel idea to rub out (hence the name

INTRODUCTION.
The Rubberstamp-Archive is now over 14 years old and every day more contributions come in. Several documentations about this archive are previously made, and in this newsletter you will find an overview of all the other publications. This newsletter is updated every month and is sent to mail-artists, mail-art archives and magazines to inform about the rubberstamp archive.
HISTORIC OVERVIEW.
After the start of the archive in 1983 lots of things happened. What started with the collecting of prints of rubberstamps grew into a large collection of historic items/facts of the mail-art years after 1980 and a collection of original rubberstamps and maga zines. The main part of the archive is the collection of half A4-sized papers which are sent into the mail-art network with the purpose to document the rubberstamps mail- artists all over the world use. Especially artistic rubberstamps and selfmade stamps are collected. To give you an idea of how things grew and are today, here follows a list of some facts concerning the archive:

How We Make Our Rubber Stamp Products In the world of making rubber stamps, there are basically two ways to manufacture rubber stamps. Namely, vulcanizing and laser engraving. We use laser engraving to manufacture our rubber stamp products. As with anything in life, there's always a trade-off. This holds especially true in making rubber stamps.
Above : Example of postal cancellation rubber stamp on standard, cherry wood rubber stamp moulding. Below : Hourglass shaped art-style rubber stamp moulding. With CO2 Laser Engraving rubber stamps, you cannot use just any old rubber to take advantage of the capabilities afforded by the laser. Specifically very high resolution resulting in the rubber stamp images being finely detailed and very crisp when stamped on paper - for years of service life from the stamp. We engrave all of our rubber stamps at resolution.

Search this site We've recently introduced a new range of Whispers Rubber Stamps into all HobbyCraft superstores, so this month we've chosen to feature Rubber Stamping. This is a great craft for beginners. You only need a few basic components to get started and soon you could be making your own fabulous handcrafted cards, wedding stationery, and decorated gift wrap and boxes. Read on to find out about the basic techniques involved and for some great top tips.
What is rubber stamping?
It is a quick and effective method of producing repeat patterns using a stamp and dye ink pad. Once dry, the stamped images can be coloured in with pens or pencils.
What is heat embossing?
This technique is used to embellish stamped designs and give them a raised appearance. It uses embossing powder, pigment or specialist clear embossing ink pads and a heat tool.
It's as simple as applying a dye ink pad to a rubber stamp and pressing it onto your project surface!

Materials:
3 building blocks
(I used blocks from a child's building block set, 2 that measure about 3 inches by 1 1/2 inches and 1 that measures about 1/2 of that) you can use any wood pieces with similar measurements for this project
Tacky glue or wood glue
5 x 7 acrylic or glass piece (I used a piece of glass taken from a picture frame) Instructions: I'm fairly new to rubber stamping and I was having a difficult time making a perfect clear impression and sometimes needed to restamp an image. Without a little help, it is almost impossible to line up a stamp perfectly to make an exact impression, exactly where you want it to go. I found these tools to be much too expensive and knew I could make one that would work, for a fraction of the cost! Refer to the photo, and glue your wood pieces together to form an "L" shape, allow the glue to dry. To use your positioner, you place your glass and "L" shape together as shown in photo, making sure the glass is as tightly fitted to the corner of the wood blocks as possible. Position your inked stamp, fitting tight to the corner and make an impression on the glass. Now, remove your stamp and you'll see an impression of your stamp on the glass (see diagram 1 above) and you can move your positioner around your artwork, until you see the perfect placement of the image you have stamped on the glass.

Rubber stamping is an easy way to add more dimension to clothing and fabric projects. Here stamping expert Mary O'Neil, of Hot Potatoes Rubber Stamp Company, shares a few ideas for personalizing fabric.
    • A old foam produce tray from the supermarket can be recycled for stamping projects. The foam works well for stamping because it's impressionable and makes it easy to create a variety of shapes squiggles, circles, even handwritten names ( figure A
    • Plastic forks are another household item that creates unique effects. These work great for making rays on sunshine ( figure B
    • A cork also works great for stamping small circles.
    • Carving images onto a pencil eraser can create smaller stamps ( figure C
    • Always work on a protected surface. Wear old clothes, a paint smock or a garbage bag to protect clothing.
    • When stamping on fabric, make sure to use paint that is specifically for fabric. (You certainly want your new garments to survive the washing machine!) Also, fabric paint is especially important for children's clothes, since they often need to be bleached. (

All About Getting Into Rubber Stamp Business
Every business and most households use rubber stamps routinely - they are accepted as a necessary part of life. Although there are several variations (self-inking, impregnated rubber), the "old fashioned hit the ink pad" type is still far and away the most popular and is likely to remain so for the future. Making rubber stamps can be both interesting and profitable. There are at least six different methods for making rubber stamps and anyone considering this as a business show know about them. The oldest method is hand carved type, which is still used today in the orient - Chinese in little stalls on the streets of Taipei for example will hand carved your "han" (Chinese family name) into a rubber stamp for a few cents, or into an ivory or bone han for a little more. Not long ago, it was possible to have a genuine signature stamp made this way. It took one of these artist (who speaks Chinese) about 10 minutes to carve a complete signature (in any language) from a carbon (backwards) copy at a cost of less than a dollar. A similar art is still practiced in this country - but more on that later. The most common method of making rubber stamps is with hand set "foundry" type. Individual printer's type is hand-set, along with any borders or illustrations (cuts) into a holder (chase).

Making Pins with Rubber Stamps Idea and Pins were submitted by Julie Dawe, Fort Collins, Colorodo Its easy to make pins with your rubber stamps. There are many ways to do this. Below are some possible methods! Idea #1: Stamp your image, color it, laminate it, and attach a pin back. Idea #2: Stamp your image, color it, and have it reduced and color copied at a copy center. Tell the copy center to fit as many reduced images as they can onto a single sheet of paper. At about $1 per color copy, you can have many images made for very little cost. Then cut out your images, laminate, and attach pin backs. Idea #3: Stamp an image onto shrink plastic. One method is to stamp the image on to the plastic with permanent ink, color it, cut it out, then shrink it with your heat source. Attach the pin back and you're done. If you want to punch a hole in the pin, do it before shrinking the plastic. Fun Idea!

Stamping Basics: Taking Care of Your Cutting Tools
    By Chris Chatten
Dull or sticky blades on cutting tools like scissors, paper cutters, and punches can cause papers to tear and ruin a perfectly good project. Here are a few tips to help you keep that cutting edge.
Adhesive residue can build up on scissors when you trim stamps or cut through other sticky materials. Keeping the inside of the blades clean will extend the life of the cutting blade. The manufacturer of Kai Scissors recommends using rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball to clean. Water in the pivot screw of your scissors can also interfere with cutting if the screw rusts. Occasionally apply one drop of sewing machine oil to the screw to loosen it up. Also, hand-held sharpeners won't work if the blades of your scissors are already dull; they'll need to be professionally sharpened. Kai Scissors offers a sharpening service for a small fee (as do some sewing and craft stores). For more information, see their web site, www.Kaiscissors.com

by Marianne Combs , Minnesota Public Radio
    January 22, 2004
Rubber stamps were first used as office and teaching tools, but then became popularized in kids picture sets. (MPR Photo/Marianne Combs) The paint brush, camera, pen and pastel are all recognized as instruments of the artists' trade. But what about the rubber stamp? Originally created for small businesses and teachers, rubber stamps have a long history in the art world as well. The Minnesota Center for Book Arts documents the rubber stamps rise from utilitarian tool to art object in its latest exhibition.
