How did Madol write and publish several biographies? David McCullough says that two thirds of the way through a typescript neither the biography nor its writer are the same person. How do you write five drafts of your autobiography, and not find a publisher? Why did he read Proust and Balzac and avoid Kant, Spinoza, and Marx? Why did he write hundreds of pages recording his dreams and day dreams, but not read Freud? The answers to these questions will spin out over the next couple of years.

Queen Victoria
Princess Alexandrina
Queen Victoria's father was Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, a son of King George III . Because the king was insane, Edward's oldest brother George served as the country's regent. The Prince Regent and his estranged wife Caroline had just one child, Princess Charlotte of Wales. After Charlotte's death in 1817, people began to worry about the royal succession. Although the king had twelve living children, none of them had offspring who were eligible to inherit the throne. Parliament and the public wanted the king's four unmarried sons to find wives, and three of them - including the 50-year-old Duke of Kent - quickly did so. His chosen bride was a German princess, Victoire of Saxe-Coburg, age 31. She was the widow of Prince Emich Charles of Leiningen, and had two children from that marriage, Charles and Feodora. Edward and Victoire were married in July of 1818. Although they barely knew each other on their wedding day, they soon became fond of one another, and their marriage seems to have been happy. On May 24, 1819 the Duchess of Kent gave birth to a daughter. (The baby was delivered by a female doctor, Frau Siebold, who later that year attended the birth of Victoire's nephew, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg.) The duke and duchess planned to name their daughter Georgiana Charlotte Augusta Alexandrina Victoria. However, the Prince Regent, who was one of the baby's godfathers, refused to allow his own name (George) or his late daughter's name (Charlotte Augusta) to be bestowed upon this possible future queen. He announced that the baby would be named Alexandrina after her other godfather, Russian tsar Alexander I. When Edward suggested Elizabeth as a second name, the Prince Regent shook his head and declared, "Give her the mother's name also then, but it cannot precede that of the emperor."

Royal Genealogy
W elcome to RoyaList Online, a guide to the royal genealogy of Britain. As its name suggests, the core of the web site is a "royal list": a database that provides biographical details of thousands of individuals who have either belonged to, or been connected with, the royal family of England and Scotland during more than 1,000 years of history. A lthough the primary focus is on British royalty, the web of intermarriages amongst the royal houses of Europe is such that many representatives of continental royalty are also featured. The intention has been to include all known members of the immediate family of those who are either in or close to the English and Scottish royal lines. The further an individual is from a royal line, the less likely it is that his or her immediate family will be included.
Historical Sources
R oyaList Online is intended as a general reference for those interested in royal genealogy, rather than as a specialist tool, and the vast majority of the information provided has therefore been drawn from secondary sources, such as royal biographies, rather than from original research. Often, different sources disagree on a given subject, and in these instances we have tried to use whichever one appears to be most authoritative and reliable, although where this is difficult to judge we have simply chosen whichever interpretation seemed most likely.

... Biographies A - Z St. Birinus (died 649) Born: c.600 Bishop of Wessex Died: 3rd December 649 Birinus was probably a Frank, consecrated a bishop by Archbishop Asterius in Genoa. In 634, he was sent by Pope Honorius I to convert the pagan people of Mercia. He landed at Portchester (Hampshire) and moved up through the Christian Celts of Hampshire to Silchester (Hampshire). Before he reached Mercia though, he encountered the pagan Saxons of the Thames Valley. Finding them greatly in need of Christian teaching, he decided to stay and was directed to the King's estate on the Berkshire Downs, probably at Cholsey (Berkshire). Here he met King Cynegils of Wessex who chose Churn Knob (Blewbury, Berkshire) as the site for the saint's first sermon. He must have thought this ancient pagan place to be a fine spot to intimidate the newcomer. However, Birinus was unperturbed and even managed to persuade the King of the merits of Christianity. Cynegils allowed Birinus to preach throughout his Kingdom, but it took a while before he himself was totally converted. The King was, at the time, desperately trying to finalise an alliance with the powerful King Oswald of Northumbria. Together he hoped they could defeat the hated Mercians. Cynegils arranged negotiations at his palace in Easthampstead (Berkshire), and the King of Northumbria travelled down to meet him. On reaching Finchampstead (Berkshire), the King became thirsty and prayed for water. The Holy Dozell's (or St.Oswald's) Well instantaneously sprang up and flowed fresh water. At the Royal talks, the only sticking point was that Oswald was a Christian and would not ally himself to any pagan. So the King of Wessex decided it was time to be baptised into this new church. Oswald agreed the alliance could then be cemented by the marriage of his daughter and the southern King. Birinus was sent for and, at the nearby Fountain Garth (Bracknell, Berkshire), Cynegils was baptised immediately.
