The Rec-Racer III Top View
History of the Rec-Racer II and Rec-Racer III:
The Durham Boat Company began importing the original Rec-Racer in 1984 and that proved to be a very speedy and popular boat. Initially we imported the entire boat. Gradually we moved to purchasing and installing all the hardware, to the point now where we manufacture all the major sub-assemblies that go into making the boat. We manufacture the footstretchers, seats, and riggers on the top-of-the-line boats as well as install all other hardware and custom rig the boat. In 1994, we changed the design to slightly increase its maximum capacity, while further improving on its speed and rowing efficiency. The changes have been very well received. In 1995 and 1996, the boat was used in the Blackburn Challenge. (i.e., approximately 20 mile race around Cape Ann, near Glouster, MA in open water conditions) Both years a course record was set, beating all manufacturers of recreational rowing shells. With the addition of our own all carbon sub-assemblies we have provided equal or better rigging than one would find on top line racing singles. Through extensive use of the boats in our own sculling school and club, we have over the years received much valuable feedback as how best to improve upon equipment design and optimize boat set-up and rigging. We are confident that we have designed the boat so that the rower feels comfortable in the boat, yet still have enough feedback from the boat so as to not develop bad habits from rowing a boat that is too forgiving.

http://www.sdrc-row.org/history/
Home About President's Message History ... Facilities Programs Open Masters/Pre-Masters Juniors Recreational/Novice ... Miscellaneous History Rowing clubs, as we know them today, first appeared in London in the late 18th century. Two of these early clubs, the Star and the Arrow, merged after a few years into the Leander Boat Club, which is still a prestigious and active rowing club whose boathouse is now located near the finish of the famous Henley-on-Thames race course. The popularity of recreational sports grew rapidly in the early 19th century and rowing was foremost among them.
By the 1820’s rowing clubs existed on the east coast of in the U.S. and began to spread westward. The west coast’s first rowing club was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in the 1860’s and within a few years clubs were started in San Francisco. Still active are Southend (1873) and Dolphin (1877). It took only another decade for the sport to reach the small community in Southern California called San Diego.
In 1888 a group of San Diegans formed the Excelsior Rowing and Swim Club. At that time the town was in the midst of a population boom and the number of residents had reached about 14,000, up from only 2,600 people in 1880. Rowing was then one of the most popular sports, and competitive rowing events, along with boxing and horse racing, drew very large crowds and fostered extensive wagering.

The Sliding rigger in Practice
The Sliding Rigger in Practice
Animation comparing the action of the sliding seat with the sliding rigger What are the advantages of a sliding rigger? One of the most important skills in competitive sculling is handling the recovery, from release to catch, during which you move your body aft in the boat while your oars are out in the water. Good scullers manage to get their hands out of the flow, follow with their torso and finally pull themselves smoothly aft with their feet without greatly checking the boat's run through the water. No matter how well this is done, however, the momentum of a human body moving aft has a significant impact on the boat when all that weight has to stop and start forward again.
TECHNICAL
Not only does the rowers momentum work against the boat's run it works against the power transmitted to the oars. A portion, small but measurable, of the rower's power goes to starting and stopping his or her body. When the rower weighs 180 pounds and the sliding rigger mechanism weighs only eight pounds, it takes a lot less power to accelerate the rigger than the rower's body, leaving more energy for the oar. In addition to the inertial effect of a rower's weight moving forward and aft every two seconds, that same weight transfer is pushing first the bow then the stern deeper in the water. With 100+ pounds moving back and forth over 18 inches or so, the bow and stern will alternately burn an inch or more on every stroke. If the rower's body can remain stationary in the boat, momentum checks and bobbing are eliminated.
