Life Chinese Taipei makes history by rowing to Olympics 2004-04-24 00:33:32 Xinhua English SHANGHAI, April 24(Xinhuanet) Wang Ming Hui and Chiang Chien Ju made history for Chinese Taipei rowing by booking two Olympic berths to Athens in men's and women's single sculls respectively in the 2004 Olympic Continental Qualification Regatta for Asia here on Saturday. Second-placed in Friday's semifinal, Wang won Chinese Taipei's first ever Olympic rowing ticket by making it to Final A, in whichall six boats qualified for the Olympics. Chinese Taipei head coach Lin Bo Wen praised Wang but said the 19-year-old Wang was too young to have consistent form after he finished fifth in Final A. Chiang Chien Ju, ranked first in the heat, went directly to Final A, in which she came out No. 1 and won a second berth for Chinese Taipei. Lin said, Chiang, silver medallist in women's four in the 2002 Busan Asian Games, had improved on her last year's performance despite injuries sustained before the Shanghai event. Chinese Taipei rowing team had outlined its Olympic goal as to win Olympic tickets and squeeze into Final B in Athens, in which the former had been achieved.

History of the Sport of Rowing
From the development of the concept of an oar working against a fulcrum (sometime after 1000 B.C.) until the present, rowing has been an efficient means of transportation. In the past 500 years whale boats, captains' gigs, surf rescue boats, ferrymen, fishermen and many others have turned to oar-propelled boats. And from the beginning, any time there were two or more boats, sooner or later there was a race, whether for business, for honor, or purely for the sport of it. Rowing began to develop as a sport in the early 19th century. In England, boys at Eton were racing in eights by 1811, and the first Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge was held in 1829. In the United States, the first boat club appeared in New York harbor in 1834, while a Yale student began intramural college rowing with the purchase of a second-hand Whitehall boat for $29.50 in 1843. Soon rowing had spread across the country. The Detroit Boat Club (founded in 1839) has the honor of being the oldest club in the country still active in the sport. The Schuylkill Navy was organized in 1858 by the Philadelphia boat clubs, and is the oldest sporting organization still in existence. As the country's population began to move to the cities following the Civil War, they soon seized upon sports and outdoor activities to fill their free time. Leading the way were horse racing and boat racing, the latter involving amateurs, professionals and college students. Regattas increased from 10 or 12 before the Civil War to over 150 in 1872, and were held from Savannah to Sacramento and Maine to Milwaukee. By 1873, there were 289 rowing clubs, 74 in New York, 12 in Georgia, 14 in Michigan, 5 in Iowa and 14 in California.

Fundraising Competitive rowing among organized crews is one of the oldest and most traditional sports. Races between oared galleys were held in ancient Egypt and Rome. The Thames River in England is the setting for three of the most celebrated rowing events in the world: Doggett's Coat and Badge Race, the oldest rowing contest in the world, held annually since 1715 (see painting by Peter Monamy to the left) ; the annual boat race between the universities of Oxford and Cambridge; and the Henley Royal Regatta. The Henley annually attracts the foremost crews and scullers of the world, including several from U.S. universities and schools. Rowing began to evolve into the sport we know today during the early 1800’s. In 1829, the first "Oxford-Cambridge" race took place on the River Thames in England between Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Ten years later, the infamous "Henley Royal Regatta" began. A major improvement in rowing equipment was made when the rowers of Newcastle on Tyne invented outriggers that allowed the boats to be thinner, yet still allowing the oar to be placed at a useful distance from the rower. Soon after, Matt Taylor created a keel-less shell, which reduced the weight of racing shell significantly.

Rowing in London, Ontario, Canada
by Michael F. Murphy, Ph.D. Most people today would be surprised to learn that since pioneer times London, Ontario, has produced some of Canada's finest rowers. Sporadic successes, flawed memories, and a lack of research, publication and media attention account for the lack of recognition. This article will partially reconstruct that exciting history. The first documented rowing regatta in London took place in 1849 on a now non‑existent lake, Lake Horn, which was situated east of the current CPR Hotel (the "Ceeps"). The contest involved local citizens and British soldiers from the Twentieth Regiment, who were stationed at the military reservation on what is now called Victoria Park. In all likelihood, regattas were held before then but to date no evidence has been discovered to substantiate the claim. Local newspaper articles record an increasing number of rowing competitions during the late 1850s and 1860s, as crews from the "Arms," "Abbey" and "Tecumseh" hotels clashed oars in friendly rivalries on the south branch of the Thames River. Tragedy, however, struck in 1881. On the holiday weekend of May 24, 1881, the paddle wheeler "Victoria" sank on its return trip from Springbank Park to London; and almost 200 lives were lost. Legend has it two scullers were racing on the Thames River that day, and as they powered past the Victoria a large number of people rushed to one side to witness their efforts thereby causing the steamer to sink. As a result of this incident, boating enthusiasm on the river was severely restrained for many years.

The Other History of the Olympics Golden Moments by Allen St. John September 20 - 26, 2000 ure, you've heard a lot about the truly heroic moments in Olympic history: Bob Beamon's record-breaking long jump, Abebe Bikili winning the marathon barefoot, Mark Spitz winning seven gold medals with that Tony Orlando mustache in tow. But the Olympics is also about cheating, drug abuse, wooden legs, sex changes, and death threats by dictators. Here is a Games-by-Games time line of classic Olympic moments that won't make NBC's heartwarming reel of past highlights. Athens 1896 The 1500-meter swim in the maiden Olympics is contested in open seas, with 12-foot-high waves and 55-degree water. Says winner Alfred Hajos, "I shivered from the thought of what would happen if I got a cramp in the cold water. My will to live completely overcame my desire to win." St. Louis 1904

    The Sport of Rowing
Rowers have been called the fittest athletes in the Olympic Games. Their sport demands not only superior physical strength and endurance, but the ultimate in teamwork. To win, they must forego the desire to be an individual star and commit their strength to the team. Rowers represent the third largest contingent in the Olympic Games, but earning a place on that team will require a total commitment, a significant delay in their careers, and considerable sacrifice in addition to talent and strength. Well-educated, intelligent and driven, rowers were leaders in their schools and universities. Few sports can claim the talented, successful future corporate and community leaders and consummate roles models that rowing can. Few sports retain the traditional values that rowing does - teamwork, dedication, spirit, camaraderie, integrity, and strength. Back to Top
    Scholastic Rowing
Scholastic rowing, or high school rowing, has exploded across the country. It is no longer the preppy-chic sport of private schools, but the substance of public high school varsity sports, raising money for the expensive equipment with crew booster orchestrated fundraisers galore and extraordinary parental involvement in running daily practices and weekly regattas from March to May.

    PATRICIA YOUNG
The Globe and Mail Sydney It was a nice bit of Australian good will. The friendly Queensland city of Rockhampton built a $200,000 (Australian) training centre for the Canadian rowing team. This is an even more stunning gesture when you realize that the entirely Australian-funded centre was custom built for the Canadian team to prepare for the Sydney Olympic Games. It is the equivalent of a Montreal suburb happily paying for a Toronto Maple Leafs training arena. Canada and Australia are fierce rowing rivals. Canadian pairs world champions Emma Robinson and Theresa Luke were upset recently by an Australian boat at a World Cup regatta in Europe. At the Olympics, both boats are pegged as gold medal prospects. "The Canadians looked at several locations to hold their pre-Olympic training camp," Rockhampton rowing coach Alan Bromiley, said. "When they chose Rockhampton, we raised $100,000 to build a secure boat shed and got another $100,000 to build a buoyed 2,000-metre [Olympic distance] course.
