Today's Torah reading for this first day of Sukkot is from the Parasha, Emor in Vayikra. It relates all the holy days and festivals of the year as prescribed in the Torah. In fact, it is located almost in the very center of the Chumash, which is a metaphor for how very central the holidays are in our lives. Rabbi Irving Yitz Greenberg's book, The Jewish Way, is a wonderful look at this very portion and served as my major source for preparing this talk. According to Greenberg, "The Classic method of incorporating events and theirs lessons into Jewish life is through the holidays." However, what is also very central in our lives today on this first day of Sukkot is what has been going on in the Middle East over this week. We say kaddish every time we reach the end of one section of the liturgy and prepare to enter another. It's a marker, a pause, a time to catch our breath and reflect on where we are. Garr T he system of praise, worship, and service which God, himself, gave to the Jewish people, known by the time of Christ as Judaism, included daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and generational reminders that summoned the Jewish people to celebrate the magnificent works of God in their behalf. These remembrances constituted a major part of the worship which Yahweh prescribed for his people. They included three hours of prayer daily, the weekly Shabbat, monthly new moon celebrations, and the festivals of Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, Pentecost, Trumpets, Atonement, and Tabernacles. God knew full well that the all-too-human beings he had created were inclined to forget their connection with the Divine. For that reason, he instituted a system of remembrance, using the calendar that he had designed in the beginning when he flung the stars, sun, moon, and planets into space and ordained them to be for "signs, seasons, days, and years" (Genesis 1:14). Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too Rabbi Melanie Aron Yom Kippur 5761 - Monday, October 9, 2000 There was no one as happy this summer about the nomination of Senator Joseph Liebermann to the vice presidency of the Unites States, as the rabbis of America. The bubbe's were happy- many hadn't believed they would live to see the day. The kids I talked to were happy, it was a kind of Jackie Robinson moment for Jews. But the rabbis were the happiest of all. First of all, they had one sermon all tied up for the high holidays, and it was only August 7th. How could one not make mention of this very significant moment in American Jewish history. Here was a candidate for one of the most visible positions in American politics, not as a third party fringe candidate, but on a major party ticket. Here was a candidate chosen without any concern by the non-Jewish world that his Jewishness would be an obstacle to his election. How ironic that two days after the nomination, a major survey of American Jewry revealed its findings, that 45% of American Jews did not believe that "Virtually all positions of influence are open to Jews in this country." With or without reservations, American Jewry has entered a new phase in our participation in American civic life. Unlike many previous Jewish candidates for public office, Joe Lieberman doesn't just have a Jewish name, isn't just of Jewish ancestry, or ethnically Jewish, but identifies clearly and directly with Judaism.
