Allergy-Free in The Rose Garden
by Thomas Leo Ogren

Last Fall I needed some close-up photos of male Coyote Brush groundcover in bloom. Six blocks from my house was a yard full of the drought-tolerant groundcover, so I drove over there and standing on the sidewalk started to photograph the tiny flowers with my macro lens. I explained that I was a horticulturist and an allergy researcher, and that I needed these photos for my new book, Allergy-Free Gardening. As pollen levels in cities have increased, the cases of hay fever and asthma have also grown, skyrocketing from 10 percent thirty years ago, to an astonishing 38 percent today. (American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, December 1999) Each year more of these replacement trees reach sexual maturity, and as they come into bloom more and more people come down with allergies. Roses have long had a mostly undeserved bad rap as the cause of much allergy. Some roses, however, do cause a limited amount of allergy. The sweet, heavy fragrance of a rose like Double Delight, so pleasing to most of us, can make perfume-sensitive folks ill.

Hardy Hibiscus

Hibiscus moscheutos , or hardy hibiscus, is reliably hardy to zone 4 and marginally hardy in zone 3 according to this article from Bachman's. The dinnerplate types are especially lovely with blooms 8 to 12 inches across.

Oleander: Beautiful but Deadly
When I recently planted 3 newly purchased oleanders in a new garden bed, I knew they were poisonous. I had no intention of eating them. It does, however, make the hair stand up on the back of my neck when I read reports like this one from the Naples (Florida) Daily News. One leaf is reported to be sufficient to kill an adult human. It's important to be careful if you burn leaves and garden debris, or if you have (or plan to have) children about that may carry the flowers of poisonous plants in their mouths.

Guadalupe Gardens
Guadalupe Gardens is located south of the San Jose International Airport (and adjacent to the river park) where homes were removed because of noise 10-15 years ago. The master plan for this area was developed by the City of San Jose and a Citizen's Task Force in the early 1990's, but final FAA and City Council approval is pending. The areas of the Gardens completed at this time are the Heritage Rose Garden Historic Orchard Courtyard Garden , and the Taylor Street Rockscape

The Courtyard Garden and the Taylor Street Rock Garden were the first sections of Guadalupe Gardens to be completed. Flowering plants and Japanese cherry trees are featured in the Courtyard Garden. The Rock Garden has the latest in drought tolerant landscaping. The Courtyard Garden is already rich with a variety of plants. From Japanese cherry trees and California poppies, to roses and evergreen shrubs, it represents and ideal opportunity for evaluating the effects of recycled water use in public gardens. South Bay Water Recycling personel, with input from the City park staff and the Horticultural Department at the University of California, Davis selected additional test plants for empty beds in the Courtyard Gardens based on their needs for testing. The condition of the plants will be monitored and the results recorded in the months to come.

Creating a Rose Garden
Posted by Hunty QLD/Australia ( My Page ) on Wed, May 5, 04 at 20:59 Hi, I am new here too and live in Brisbane. I am starting in the growing roses Hobby, I mean I had a few bushes of mini roses in my frontyard which were the only flowers that resisted an prolonged absence of mine ( due to ill health) and are still alive and flowering.
So I have seen the catalogue of Big W and decided to plant a few others, I envision planting over 500 plants in the future and getting my yard full of roses but for now I needed a good bunch for starters...I studied the subject for a while and bought some at Big W. Can you please help me and put together a list of strong, Hardy to put up with Brisbane's weather, fragrant roses of every type and colours for starting my garden? Thanks very much and I will stick around to get those nice tips in the messages. Cheers,
Hunty PS- I have bought some climbers:

Peak interest: June to October
The Centennial Rose Garden, opened in 1967, contains about 2,000 modern hybrid roses and 650 shrub roses arranged to reflect the highlights of rose breeding. It includes old garden roses, modern garden roses, modern shrub roses and miniature roses. Climbing roses are included with other climbing plants on the pergola, and the Rose Walk showcases low maintenance roses with companion plants, and their versatility in the home landscape.

Medicinal Garden Peak interest: April to October Think of the medication you and your family use in a single year. Have you taken codeine to stop a cough? ASA to ease a headache? Digoxin for heart problems? These are among the many prescribed medications that are derived from plants. Each bed in this garden focuses on a particular part of the human body, with plants arranged by the disease they treat. Interpretive materials examine not only the plants and the medicines they yield, but also the health implications of the loss of wild plant species and habitat. Visitors can compare medicinal herbs from various cultures, and see the sources of both ancient traditional medicines and the compounds used in current medical research. The Fragrant Year , 1967, which she also illustrated, is a landmark work on choice garden plants. Speaking from her own research and experiences in her Pennsylvania garden, she wrote countless articles on old roses for the Heritage Roses Group and for national and international publications such as The American Rose Annual and The Royal National Rose Society . Mrs. Bell was mentor to many prominent experts in the field, including Dr. Arthur O. Tucker of Delaware State University and Rev. Douglas Seidel of Emmaus, Pennsylvania. It was Doug Seidel who arranged for many of the more rare Noisette specimens to be included in this garden, and even donated prized plants from his personal collection.
At present, the garden contains thirty different Noisettes, with more to come. In addition to the obvious varieties–the ‘Champneys Pink Cluster’, ‘Blush Noisette’, and the parents ‘Old Blush China’ and ‘Double White Musk’–the garden includes many one-of-a-kind selections. Doug Seidel personally donated his "Aunt Louisa Rose" from the garden of President Garfield’s aunt and "Faded Pink Monthly," from Creekside, home of pioneer old rose collector Mrs. Frederick Love Keays, who acquired her plant from the descendent of a slave who rooted a slip before the Civil War.

We love birds and offer lots of plants just for birds. These plants bring in more and different birds than what you'll see at bird feeders. They also provide shelter and places for birds to nest. Lucy Hayes poses with her children in the White House conservatories, c.1879. Historical Views of the White House Gardens and Grounds History of the White House Gardens and Grounds
Planning for a garden at the White House began with President Washington, who expressed a desire to plant a botanical garden. Washington purchased the land for what is now the South lawn from a tobacco planter named Davy Burns, while the North grounds originally belonged to the Pierce family. As the first President to occupy the White House, John Adams ordered the first planting of a garden. Thomas Jefferson then undertook a complete redesign of the garden. He started the tradition of planting trees when he planted hundreds of seedling trees, although none of Jefferson's trees is believed to have survived to the present day. It was his idea to plant groves of trees, he picked the location for the flower garden, and fences and walls were eventually built where he had specified. In addition, Jefferson built an arc of triumph flanked by two weeping willow trees on the southeast corner of the grounds that are no longer standing. President James Monroe increased tree planting on the White House grounds, and hired Charles Bizet, who is considered to have been the first White House gardener. When John Quincy Adams followed Monroe into office in 1825, he replaced Bizet with John Ousley, who remained the White House gardener for the next 30 years. Adams was the first President to develop the flower gardens that Jefferson had earlier laid out, and was also the first to plant ornamental trees. As an avid gardener himself, Adams personally enjoyed planting seedlings that included fruit trees, herbs and vegetables.

The concept of the garden devoted entirely to roses is throught of as essentially English, and greatly treasured as such, but it actually originated in France in the nineteenth century. However, the idea found its most enthusiastic following in England, at first in the gardens of the rich, but it gradually became more widespread. An amateur but knowledgeable rose grower, Michael Gibson has been on the Council of the Royal National Rose Society since 1974 and was President for the years 1985-6.
