CHAPTER XIV O ne of the many ways in which the splendid enthusiasm for good gardeningan enthusiasm which only grows stronger as time goes onis showing itself, is in the general desire to use beautiful Roses more worthily. We are growing impatient of the usual Rose garden, generally a sort of target of concentric rings of beds placed upon turf, often with no special aim at connected design with the portions of the garden immediately about it, and filled with plants without a thought of their colour effect or any other worthy intention. Now that there is such good and wonderfully varied material to be had, it is all the more encouraging to make Rose gardens more beautiful, not with beds of Roses alonemany a Rose garden is already too extensive in its display of mere bedsbut to consider the many different ways in which Roses not only consent to grow but in which they live most happily and look their best. Beds we have had, and arches and bowers, but very little as yet in the whole range of possible Rose garden beauty. The Rose garden at its best admits of many more beauties than these alone. Of the Roses we have now to choose from some are actual species, and many of them so nearly related to species that their wild way of growth may well be taken into account and provided for. Thus the beautiful milk-white

ARS Headquarters Blacked Out By Powerful Storms!!
The American Rose Society apologizes for any inconvenience to our members and the public - - two very strong storms went through our area during the first week of June and completely knocked out all electricity and phone service to our headquarters. We are working with Bell South and the power company to restore service and repair downed lines as quickly as possible.
During the interim, all internet sales are being held (we obviously cannot respond to your orders) until power is restored. Our servers are secure and are holding all incoming sales and e-mail messages. We regret the phone service is down so messages to us are not getting through and/or we are unable to respond.
We will reply to all of you as soon as possible - - meanwhile, our Consulting Rosarians will continue to try to answer all questions you might have.
Thank you for your patience ... and enjoy your beautiful roses.

Jens Munk T his lovely, fast growing medium pink rose with spicy fragrance was bred by Dr. Felicitas Svejda, “the most noted female rose breeder in the world.” She introduced this extremely hardy and disease resistant rose in 1974. Dr. Svejda was born in Vienna in 1920. She used rugosas extensively in the breeding of her series of super-hardy roses. She joined the Experimental Farm in Ottawa in 1961 and named her introductions after 17 Canadian explorers. She retired in 1987. Jens Munk was a Danish explorer who reached Hudson Bay in 1619 searching for a Northwest Passage . However, out of a crew of 64, only Munk, an older man and a young boy managed to survive scurvy and trichinosis. After spending their first winter in the new land they sailed back to Denmark, reaching Copenhagen on Christmas Day 1620. He died 8 years later. Click Rose For More Details.

Enjoy the Tyler Rose Garden "A person who calls a rose by any other name is probably pruning!" Although it's not the best kept secret, if you haven't been to the Tyler Rose Garden recently, you should certainly go soon! Tyler is known as the rose capital of the U.S. Field rose production has been a hallmark of Smith County in northeast Texas since the turn of the century. In celebration of the influence the rose industry has had on this area, Tyler developed a first-class rose garden. This flowering jewel is located in the 1900 block of W. Front Street, just west of downtown Tyler. Known nation-wide for its outstanding display of roses, the Tyler Rose Garden is full of breath-taking beauty, especially in the spring and again in mid-October when the Rose Garden is in full bloom for the annual Texas Rose Festival. Roses , of course, are the main attraction at the garden, though there are several other features in the 14 acre complex that compliment the roses. Standing on the balcony of the Rose Garden Center looking over the garden , your senses will be overwhelmed with color when the garden is at its peak of bloom, which in the spring time is right about now! Row upon row of hybrid tea and floribunda roses invite the visitor to come into the garden to smell and learn. There are at least 400 rose varieties and 30,000 bushes to experience. Every year 2000 or more bushes are replanted every year, keeping the garden current with the newest varieties.

The Garden of the Rose - The Rambling Rector rampant on a roof.
English Rose Garden Tours
Blowsy, precocious and seductive are words often applied to roses. These are words you rarely hear describing other flowers. The rose has its own following, its aficionados, who revel dreamily in the perfume, form and sheer beauty of its blooms. On a warm summer's evening, a stroll in an English rose garden ranks among the best of life's experiences.
But an English rose garden has a power to enchant even in pouring rain. I was recalling such an occasion on one of our tours with a visitor, when I met her back in her own garden in New Zealand two years later. It transpired that we had both had a lump in our throats as we turned the corner into the rose garden at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire under our umbrellas on a warm wet summer's afternoon. There, under weeping silver pear trees, the roses were sadly inviting us in, with tears tumbling down their petals. I personally believe roses belong on balustrades and pergolas in gardens like Heale House in Wiltshire and Hestercombe in Somerset, but I'm a romantic. Others see them as a breeder's challenge. The climate in England was kind to species brought in as guests from far off lands in times of old and they soon became residents, grew up, bred and cross bred. Today we have a rich variety of hybrids and cultivars. The Victorians invented the formal rose garden where they could display their horticultural prowess. Such gardens are still popular in municipal parks and in the gardens of rose breeding enthusiasts.

M y rose garden
has been a labor of love for the past nine years. Beginnings were small scale with only five roses humbly potted up in basic container soil. I was under the impression that that was enough. The journey of discovery, learning and sometimes disappointment had begun.
When one plants roses with the notion that standard soil and basic watering schedules will suffice, one is heading for the first lesson. I found that my roses bloomed admirably for a season but by the next season they were spent. Blooms decreased in size and the quantity and plants in general had lost their vigor.
My thoughts were that I had bought inferior specimens and eagerly ran out to replace them. I also had by then created a small garden in which several hybrid teas had been placed in well dug holes in the ground; nothing special being added to the soil which, being unaware of at the time, lacked nutrients and was overly sandy. The majority of the roses declined in health. I would have given up by then had it not been for my extreme fondness for roses. I was determined to discover what made them tick! The remedy for ignorance is knowledge and the library, plus any expert on the subject you can find. I immersed myself in many books and began rose treatments based on trial and experimentation. Discovering that roses are ‘greedy feeders’ with need for space, I began to plant them with plenty of added nutrients. The container roses were planted with Miracle Grow potting soil, bone meal, blood meal and alfalfa pellets in generous pots. Similarly the ground planted roses were also offered handfuls of bone meal, blood meal and manure.

Sometimes I wonder when a rose has been given an interesting name, how that name came to be. Dr. Buck, with his wife Ruby, gave many of his roses pleasant and interesting names. The following is the origin for some of these rose names.
Dr. Buck Roses Photo Gallery
“Quotes come from a speech given by Dr. Griffith Buck in 1985 for the Green Bay Botanical Garden Society in Green Bay Wisconsin.” (Buck Roses, 1998)
Aunt Honey
“The man that got me started on this rose breeding program at Iowa State had a wife who’s name was Helen. Her little nieces couldn’t say Aunt Helen, so I called a rose like they called their aunt, namely ‘Aunt Honey’.”
El Catala
“I wanted to name a rose after Pedro Dot , a famous Spanish rose breeder who supported me in my breeding. I wrote to Pedro’s son, telling him that I would like to name this rose for his father. I told him I knew his father was very proud of being a Spaniard who was also proud of being a Catalonian. His son replied, “If you are going to name it for my father, why don’t you name it in Catalonian and call it ‘El Catala’.” “ which I did.”
Dorcas
“Dorcas was a television reporter on our college television station. Every noon she would have an interview program. Since I enjoyed being on her program, I named a rose for her.”
