Enjoy the Tyler Rose Garden "A person who calls a rose by any other name is probably pruning!" Although it's not the best kept secret, if you haven't been to the Tyler Rose Garden recently, you should certainly go soon! Tyler is known as the rose capital of the U.S. Field rose production has been a hallmark of Smith County in northeast Texas since the turn of the century. In celebration of the influence the rose industry has had on this area, Tyler developed a first-class rose garden. This flowering jewel is located in the 1900 block of W. Front Street, just west of downtown Tyler. Known nation-wide for its outstanding display of roses, the Tyler Rose Garden is full of breath-taking beauty, especially in the spring and again in mid-October when the Rose Garden is in full bloom for the annual Texas Rose Festival. Roses , of course, are the main attraction at the garden, though there are several other features in the 14 acre complex that compliment the roses. Standing on the balcony of the Rose Garden Center looking over the garden , your senses will be overwhelmed with color when the garden is at its peak of bloom, which in the spring time is right about now! Row upon row of hybrid tea and floribunda roses invite the visitor to come into the garden to smell and learn. There are at least 400 rose varieties and 30,000 bushes to experience. Every year 2000 or more bushes are replanted every year, keeping the garden current with the newest varieties.

HOW TO PLANT ROSES
The scoop on planting roses
Where to plant your rose?
First let's look at that sunny (more than 4 hours direct sun; no skimping) spot in the yard. How's the water situation? Roses like plenty of moisture, but hate boggy situations and will express their distaste by simply dying! If the area is really wet I'd recommend that you plant roses in a raised bed, building a containment of rock, block or railroad ties that give another two feet or so of planting depth above the existing soil profile. Just a little damp? Adding sand can help slightly moist soil if it's just a little damp, but unless more than 30% of the total soil volume is sand it will actually hold MORE water. And sand decreases fertility so I feel raising the bed is really the best way to go (unless you like the idea of native roses like R. nitida or R. palustris, both wild swamp specialists from the eastern half of the States and hard to find in the trade).

73. Growing Roses In Shade And Shade Tolerant Roses
What are we to do? In my gardening adventures, I try to reserve the most sunny locations for roses and these prime rose locations are quickly filled.
http://logos.goodnews.net/~kkrugh/rose/shade1.htm
Growing Roses In Shade / Shade Tolerant Roses
Personal comments . . .
  • It is difficult for the rose grower to make a good evaluation of a rose's shade tolerance. Since a rose variety may be grown in only one location in the garden, sun or part shade, the rose gardener often can not compare the rose's performance in a more sunny or shaded situation. Perhaps the more experienced rose gardener would be able to make a more informed comment about any particular rose and it's penchant for sun or shade. The hybrid musks I grow (Danae, Felicia, Penelope, Moonlight, and especially Ballerina) as well as Gruss an Aachen are my best repeat blooming roses that receive partial sun/shade

There is a classic Italian song, "Rose Rosse," about a young man who uses red roses to seduce a fair maiden. But she was not the first to fall prey to the potent flower; everyone from the ancient Romans to the more contemporary women in "The Bachelorette" have used roses to woo the objects of their affection. Although, the rose is nearly 35 million years old, according to fossils, it is the flower's relationship with mankind that has made its beauty timeless. The flower has long been a favorite with royalty - emperors in 17th century Europe used the flower - from rose petal confetti at feasts to rose water baths - to flaunt their wealth. It has also has been used for medicinal purposes, perfumes, even food throughout the ages. About 5,000 years ago, the Chinese began cultivating roses in gardens, and soon everyone wanted a piece of the magic for their homes. Today, nearly 25,000 people are members of the American Rose Society, an organization dedicated to promoting the rose's survival and history.

USA Today Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Questions for Discussion 3. About the Author Introduction It has been four months since Conrad Morrisey's wife, Rose, has died, and the grief-stricken man has fallen into despair, forgetting even to dress or eat. Distracted by his loss, Conrad has allowed his wife's cherished garden to slip into dilapidated neglect. Yet the garden has never appeared as vibrant and overflowing as it does this season. It is in this wild, exuberantly abundant garden, that Conrad receives an unearthly visitor: an angel who appears to be his deceased father-in-law, Lemuel. Lemuel-the-angel brings Conrad an extraordinary message. As the reticent Conrad struggles to tell his magical story to the townspeople of Laurel, he finds himself drawn out of his enclosed life of pigeon tending, and thrust directly into the hub of Rose's life in a way he'd never experienced. As the many people who've been touched by Rose make pilgrimages to the garden, he learns of his wife's incredible generosity and compassion. Conrad had thought his life was over, but buoyed by Rose's message of love, he is about to embark on vital journey of the heart.
