My Online Rose Garden
"He who would have beautiful roses in his garden must have beautiful roses in his heart" It is a great joy to grow roses in your garden. Known as "the Queen of Flowers", roses can bring a lot of beauty to your garden and home. A unique characteristic of roses is that they are amazingly versatile. Roses can be used in many landscape applications: groundcovers for an appearance of carpet of color, hybrid teas and climbers for architectural interest, shrub roses for striking hedges, and tree roses. To grow roses in your garden is to participate in historic horticulture! Roses are rich with symbolism and meaning (see below) going back for centuries. No wonder, then, that people get fanatical about their roses, devoting weekends and whole summers to their rose gardens. More information on caring for roses is available at this site.
Symbolism and Meaning of Roses
Since ancient times roses have been grown for their fragrance, beauty and healing properties. Roses, with their unique combination of thorny stems and fragrant blossoms, are often prized a symbol of achievement, completion and perfection: after having met the long stems with the thorns you are rewarded with a flower of great beauty and mesmerizing fragrance. In other words, roses act as a metaphor for life: after overcoming difficulty you will find inner harmony, union and happiness. Roses are heavily symbolic, often used in

April, 1996
by Craig Summers Black
The beauty of Judith and Robert Gries' rose garden is not just in its physical appeal, but in the fact that it is so darned easyeasy to care for, easy to bloom, easy to love. The Grieses achieved this effortlessness by avoiding the difficult-to-please hybrid teas, those gangly flower factories and florists' favorites. Instead, they fancy "old-fashioned" roses, a catchall term that encompasses almost every other kind of rose: antiques, rugosas, even some modern shrubs. These romantic beauties provide all the tea-rose charm (and then some) with almost none of the bother. No endless sprayings of fungicides or insecticides. In fact, no chemicals whatsoever. And no wearying cold-weather coddling. All of which leaves the couple more time to enjoy their garden and their children, above left, Nathaniel, Edward, Lauren, and, not pictured, Marianne and Robert. How to grow old roses Buying an old-fashioned rose: First, be sure the roses you like will survive winters in your area. Almost all old-fashioned roses will shake off temperatures down to -10 degrees. If your winters get colder than that, you have to be a bit selective and decide whether to buy your roses in pots or bare-root. Pots are a little easier to plant, but more expensive. Bare-root usually offers more selection, because you can buy by mail from specialty firms.

Our Garden
Click here for a bird's-eye view of the garden. We really enjoy our garden, despite its odd shape. Here in Silicon Valley, we're fortuante to have a lot that's larger than the ubiquitous "postage stamp" size. (Our lot is just under 1/4 acre). Landscaping has been a challenge since the front yard is heavily shaded, the rear area is a skinny strip, and the sides are two large triangles. Our solution? Plant as much low-maintenance stuff as possible, and otherwise, plant as many roses as possible! Roses are pathetically easy to grow in this part of California, and provide bouquets of color to brighten our house (and my mood!).
The Rose Garden(s)
We have roses in 3 parts of our yard: 8 bushes in the front yard, some in the side yard, and the bulk in the formal garden right behind the house. Here are my thoughts on how those varieties do in our yard. Hybrid Teas Floribundas Grandifloras Shrubs/Climbers ... Miniatures
Hybrid Teas
Agnes Winchel This has done fabulously for a friend of mine, but my particular bush has always been weak. Blooms are spectacular, but stems are short. I suspect I have a lousy bush. Blooms have always been good enough for the English Box class at shows, however. Go figure. Brigadoon This is one of my best roses. It has outstanding form, color, and is fairly disease-resistant in my yard. (It does fall prey to blackspot in the Spring, however.) I once saw an English Box with 6 of these, and I don't think I've ever seen anything so beautiful. It's also a terrific rose for arrangers, and holds the blooms hold their centers even under adverse conditions (like transportation to a rose show in an airplane oven!).

Steps to rose gardening success
Rose gardening has its own special mystique. Few perennials or flowering shrubs give you so many wonderful blooms soon after planting or have as long a period of bloom. And, best of all, hardy roses will come back year after year. Gardeners the world over are smitten by the allure of roses, but many people think of roses as elegant but demanding, and hard-to-grow garden prima donnas. Can rose gardening be easy? Well, yes, if you start by picking strong, disease- resistant rose bushes. Roses come many flower colors and forms and in range of growth habits, sizes and shapes. Fortunately today, many newer roses are being bred for hardiness and good disease-resistance. Like most other garden flowers, roses will
thrive if you give them what they need: 1. Lots of sun
– At least six hours of good strong sunlight daily. 2. Good soil – Well drained, but able to hold moisture, and enriched with manure and/or compost. 3. Timely care – Plenty of water and fertilizer and proper pruning at the right time. Be sure to stay on the lookout so you can nip any rose problems in the bud before they get out of hand.
Rose gardening: Getting started
Roses love sun, and should have at least six hours of sun daily. Roses prefer rich soils, but other soils are fine, as long compost or manure is worked in.

57. A Tour Of My Rose Garden
All About Our Gardens, Welcome to A Tour Of My rose Garden . We are presenting this site as a way of sharing our love of roses, and gardening in general.
http://www.playground.net/~thompson/
Established 1997 Welcome to "A Tour Of My Rose Garden". We are presenting this site as a way of sharing our love of roses, and gardening in general. Over the past several years, we have dug, planted, watered, pruned, cured, cut and photographed roses in our small suburban gardens in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. After posting a few pictures on the Internet, we quickly realized that there are people who seek out and enjoy information and photography about roses. This very positive feedback has encouraged the evolution on this site to what we are proud to present today. Sharing our roses with other interested people on the Internet gives us great pleasure. We really think that this kind of information exchange is what the Internet is all about. If you like what you see, please sign our guestbook after the tour. Welcome readers of The English Journal in Japan! We received a mention in the June 1999 issue for gardening websites.
