The story of the Teddy Bear . . . Many of us have loved a teddy bea r. Maybe
we've even had more than one very special "teddy" in our lives. Here is the real story of how the teddy bear sprang into our hearts. Nearly 100 years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt, went on a bear hunt. He enjoyed nature and being out in the woods where animals lived. Because he was the President of the United States, the people organizing the hunt wanted to make sure the hunt was successful. But after 3 days of walking and climbing and riding, no bears were found. Now what? The President's bear hunt would be a failure! The next day the hunt guide and his hunting dogs finally found an old bear. The dogs and guide followed the bear for quite a distance until the bear was very, very tired. The dogs attacked and injured the old bear. The guides tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot! President Roosevelt looked at the poor old bear and said "no!" No one would shoot this old bear for sport. That would not be right.

THE LINCOLN-ROOSEVELT CONNECTION
BY Gene Griessman, Ph.D.
www.presidentlincoln.com Teddy Roosevelt's father, whom Teddy adored, served in a civilian capacity during the Civil War. He spent a great deal of time in Washington and became a close friend of President Lincoln and his wife. They took carriage rides together, and Roosevelt even went shopping with Mary and bought bonnets for her. Theodore Roosevelt Senior's direct connection to the President was Lincoln's young secretary, John Hay. Year's later John Hay became Teddy Roosevelt's Secretary of State and served him faithfully. In fact, their joint efforts resulted in Roosevelt's receiving the Nobel Prize, the first American ever to receive it. When Roosevelt was inaugurated in 1905, John Hay gave the President a very special presenta "mourning ring" that contains an oval glass over a strand of Lincoln's hair. Hay sent a note with the ring that contains this request: "...Please wear it tomorrow; you are one of the men who most thoroughly understand and appreciate Lincoln."
Roosevelt replied: "Dear John, Surely no other President, on the eve of his inauguration, has ever received such a gift from such a friend. I am wearing the ring now; I shall think of it and you as I take the oath tomorrow. I wonder if you have any idea what your strength and wisdom and sympathy, what the guidance you have given me and the mere delight in your companionship, have meant to me these three and a half years? With love and gratitude, Ever yours...."

The First Presidential 'Picture Man' Theodore Roosevelt and His Times on Film BY KAREN C. LUND Roosevelt "is such an overmastering personality that we go the length of expressing the hope that moving pictures of him may be preserved in safe custody for future reference. What would the public of this country give today to see Abraham Lincoln or George Washington in their habits as they lived, in moving picture form? Don't you think the student, the historian, the biographer, the patriot would be glad to see moving pictures of these great men? ... It is the same with Mr. Roosevelt." The Moving Picture World Oct. 22, 1910 Although William McKinley was the first U.S. president to appear in a motion picture, Theodore Roosevelt was the first to have his career and life chronicled on a large scale by motion picture companies. Roosevelt courted the press and the media like no other president had before. He made such an impression on camera that the journal

The Roosevelt's The Roosevelt Family produced two President's in the twentieth century, Teddy and FDR. I'm going to divide this chapter into sections, one for each of the Roosevelt President, one for Eleanor, FDR's wife and cousin. On this page we will begin with Teddy Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), was the 26th president of the United States. He was b orn in New York City and was somewhat sickly in his adolescence. This he overcame and by 1882 was serving the NY State legislature. In 1886 he was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor of New York City. By 1897 we find him as the Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy. There was a lot of saber rattling going on and war with Spain seemed a certainty. He and Leonard Wood organized the first volunteer cavalry regiment which was more popularly referred to as the "Rough Riders." Teddy served with the Rough Riders as a Lt. Colonel in Cuba in 1898. In 1901, Teddy was serving as the U.S. Vice President under McKinley, and succeeded to the Presidency after McKinley's death in 1901. He was elected president in 1904 and served until 1908. During this administration, he brought Russian and Japanese representatives together which produced the treaty of Portsmouth, ending the Russo-Japanese War. For this he received the Nobel Peace Prize. I've included to ways for you to navigate the Roosevelt Family tree; one is to look at their ancestries in detail; or to get a quick view go to the pedigree's (both are below).
