1866 - "Springwood'' estate in Hyde Park with 15 - room house is purchased by James Roosevelt, Franklin's father, for $40,000. Original central portion believed to be farmhouse built in Federal style about 1800. 1866 - 1900 - James Roosevelt improves house by enlarging servants' wing, changing entrance hall and stairs, adding smoking room off dining room and a guest room above. He also built a large carriage house for driving horses and carriages. Jan. 30, 1882 - Franklin Roosevelt born in family mansion, weighing 10 pounds. March 17, 1905 - FDR marries cousin, Eleanor, and brings his bride to family mansion. 1915 -16 - While Roosevelt serves as assistant secretary of the Navy, the old Victorian villa is enlarged and transformed into a mansion more than twice its former size. Old clapboard exterior is removed and replaced by stucco. At each end, large fieldstone wings, designed by FDR, are added. Pitched roof is raised almost flat and old tower roof lowered so front facade appears uniform. Added in front is fieldstone terrace with balustrade and small columned portico at front door. 1921- Roosevelt, 39, contracts polio and spends much of his time at the mansion struggling to recover.

First Inaugural Address
ATURDAY, MARCH 4, 1933 The former Governor of New York rode to the Capitol with President Hoover. Pressures of the economy faced the President-elect as he took his oath of office from Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes on the East Portico of the Capitol. He addressed the nation by radio and announced his plans for a New Deal. Throughout that day the President met with his Cabinet designees at the White House.
I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our Nation impels. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itselfnameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days. In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things. Values have shrunken to fantastic levels; taxes have risen; our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income; the means of exchange are frozen in the currents of trade; the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side; farmers find no markets for their produce; the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone.

Franklin D. Roosevelt
The only President to be elected four times, Roosevelt pioneered the New Deal, which helped the United States overcome the Great Depression. He also directed the nation's efforts to win World War II. Elected:
The Early Years
Franklin Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York. Both he and his mother nearly died during his birth. Roosevelt grew up within the protective atmosphere of Hyde Park. He traveled extensively with his family in the United States and in Europe. He attended Groton Preparatory for high school. From 1900-1904, he was at Harvard University, where he was an average student. He was editor-in-chief of the school paper, The Harvard Crimson. He attended Columbia Law School but dropped out in 1907 after he took and passed the bar exam. After being admitted to the bar, Roosevelt joined a prestigious New York law firm. From 1911 to 1913, he was New York State Senator. From 1913 to 1920 Roosevelt served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He was an early supporter of US entry into World War I. In 1920, Roosevelt was the Vice Presidential candidate on James Cox's unsuccessful ticket. In 1921, Roosevelt was struck with the polio that paralyzed him for the rest of his life. After he spent three years in recovery, Roosevelt began his political comeback by giving the nominating speech for Alfred E. Smith at the Democratic Convention of 1924.

World Timeline ... In "Quotes" Program Summary
The longest-serving president in U.S. history, and leader through the Great Depression and World War II two of the nation's worst crises Franklin Delano Roosevelt is considered by many to be our greatest president. In his early years, as a pampered, sheltered scion of a wealthy family, FDR exhibited no outward signs of greatness. With his cousin Theodore as a role model, however, FDR purposely forged a successful political career for himself, until his devastating paralysis from polio seemed to crush his dreams. With the support of his wife, Eleanor, FDR not only recovered, but remade himself into a strong, optimistic national leader. An aristocrat beloved by "ordinary" citizens and despised by many of his own class as a traitor, FDR, for better or worse, forever changed the American people's relationship with their government. The governmental "safety net" he created would be his greatest legacy and the source of ongoing controversy today.
