During her shakedown cruise, Franklin D. Roosevelt called at Rio de Janeiro 1 to l1 February 1946 to represent the United States at the inauguration of the Brazilian president, Eurico G. Dutra, who came aboard for a short cruise. Fleet maneuvers and other training operations in the Caribbean preceded her first deployment to the Mediterranean, from 8 August to 4 October during which she was a part of a U.S. Navy force which visited Athens to bolster the government of Greece during its successful fight against the Communist. She received thousands of visitors during her calls to many Mediterranean ports, giving Europeans an opportunity to view this impressive addition to America's seapower for peace.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1937 UPI in full FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT, byname FDR (b. Jan. 30, 1882, Hyde Park, N.Y., U.S.d. April 12, 1945, Warm Springs, Ga.), 32nd president of the United States (1933-45), the only president to be reelected three times. He expanded the federal government's powers in an effort to bring about the nation's economic recovery from the Great Depression through a series of programs and reforms known as the New Deal. He was also a major Allied leader during World War II. The following is a brief summary of Franklin Roosevelt's life. For a more detailed treatment of his leadership during World War II, see the extract from the Britannica article ROOSEVELT , by Frank Freidel. Roosevelt attended Harvard University (1900-04); after marrying his cousin Eleanor Roosevelt (1905), the niece of Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt studied at Columbia University School of Law and qualified for the New York bar. In 1910 he was elected to the New York Senate, and in 1913 he became assistant secretary of the Navy. Although he was stricken with polio in 1921, he remained active in Democratic politics and was elected governor of New York state in 1928. Having inaugurated a popular program of tax relief for farmers, he was reelected governor in 1930; the following year he also began establishing state relief agencies. Elected president over Herbert Hoover in 1932, Roosevelt quickly obtained passage of a sweeping economic program that provided relief, loans, and jobs through a variety of federal agencies.

within Presidents all of American Experience The United States officially entered World War II in December 1941, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In reality, however, the United States had been fighting a war against the Axis powers for years. It was a war of words and a war of action, a war of secret meetings and public duplicity. And the prosecutor of this war was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States. Roosevelt understood early on that territorial concessions would not satisfy Adolf Hitler and his fascist counterparts, Benito Mussolini of Italy and

ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D.
, thirty-second president of the United States. Born in Hyde Park, New York, the only child in an affluent patrician family, Roosevelt was educated at such citadels of the northeastern establishment as Groton School, Harvard College, class of '04, and Columbia Law School. Law practice bored him, and he early embraced a career in politics, entering with relish into the reform tumult of the Progressive Era. Two influences shaping his public career were his distant kinsman Theodore Roosevelt, whose niece Eleanor he married in 1905, and Woodrow Wilson, whom he served as assistant secretary of the navy during the First World War. In 1920 Roosevelt was the Democratic candidate for vice president in a Republican year. Struck down by poliomyelitis in 1921, he never recovered the use of his legs, though with braces and cane, buoyant determination, and the cooperation of the press, he managed in subsequent years to convey the illusion of mobility. Encouraged by his wife, he returned to politics and in 1928 was elected governor of New York. In 1932, at the bottom of the Great Depression, Roosevelt defeated Herbert Hoover in the presidential election. A quarter of the labor force was out of work, the economy in collapse, and the nation in despair. Confronted by an emergency to which no one knew the answer, Roosevelt saw the national government as the instrument of the general welfare and experiment as the method of democracy. Theodore Roosevelt's New Nationalism, with its emphasis on federal regulation of big business, was reborn in Franklin Roosevelt's first term, and Wilson's New Freedom, with its emphasis on antitrust policy, reemerged in his second term.

PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Played by Jon Voight in Pearl Harbor
On September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt had been President for almost seven years and was expected to leave office in January 1941. But just as that September changed the world, so did it change the plans of Roosevelt. On September 13 he called Congress into special session to revise the Neutrality Act so that belligerents could purchase U.S. arms on a cash-and-carry basis, allowing U.S. allies to purchase U.S. arms even though U.S. ships were barred from war zones. He hoped that this would give enough help to Britain and France to defeat Germany. But his hope was slight. The United States, he knew, could not long remain on the sidelines of the war. Throughout his presidency, which began slightly more than a month after Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany, Roosevelt had seen and feared the growth of militant Germany and Japan. When the war did come he began to speak more harshly about Germany and Japan, but a rise in U.S. military spending did not follow. When Churchill began his confidential correspondence with Roosevelt in September 1939, Roosevelt started getting a private education about the war. Churchill, far more than any domestic advisor, gave Roosevelt the justifications for greatly expanding aid to Britain as part of an overall military buildup.

To Guide Entry
Students often wonder how the United States entered World War II. Some are especially interested in this topic since our involvement in the Vietnam war. Possibly some witnessed or remember the many anti-war demonstrations. Many are aware from television that there was a World War II, but don’t know what events and issues led the United States into it. Most students are unfamiliar with the international situations and events of the pre-World War II period. Unfortunately, misdirected epithets, such as “fascist pigs,” are heard nowadays, yet the students do not know what fascism is or what it stood for during the decades before World War II. The name of Hitler is used, quite often disparagingly, by students to show their displeasure with a strict disciplinarian and yet, they do not know how his policies caused the war in Europe. Teachers could expand their students’ understanding of this unit of study by discussing the issues and problems that led the nations into World War II. The traditional concept of the U.S.A. as being simply the land mass between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans with Alaska up on the north might be given up for a view of how our scattered Pacific island possessions with the Philippine Islands made the U.S.A. a two-continent power, a North American and an Asiatic power. With this viewpoint the following issues will not appear to be unrelated to our vital interests:

The Dying President
Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States, was elected to an unprecedented third term in 1940. It was during the end of this term that FDR's health began to decline. The strain of leading the country through World War II had begun to take its toll. Exhausted from a summit in Teheran with Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin at the end of 1943, FDR's health began to deteriorate rapidly after his return. Months passed and the President did not bounce back. He lost weight, his face thinned, and he suffered shortness of breath. At first, FDR's personal physician, Vice Admiral Ross T. McIntire diagnosed the President's problem as the "flu" and bronchitis. Not satisfied with the diagnosis, FDR's family wanted a second opinion. Dr. McIntire arranged to have the President examined at Bethesda naval Hospital in March 1944 by Dr. Howard G. Bruenn. Dr. Bruenn, a cardiologist, found that FDR was suffering from hypertension, heart disease, left ventricular cardiac failure, and bronchitis. He recommended that FDR be given digitalis, put on a diet, and have bed rest. No one told the President of his serious condition, and he never asked.
