Romania is situated in South-Eastern Europe extending approximately 480 km north to south and 640 km east to west. The Carpathian Mountains are in the center of the country, bordered on both sides by hills and plateaus and finally the great plains of the outer rim. Forests cover over a quarter of the country and the fauna is one of the richest in Europe including wolves, bears, deer, lynx and chamois. The Danube river forms the southern boundary of the country terminating in the Delta on the Black Sea, a heaven for countless native and migratory birds. Get more information: www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Geography-of-Romania Climate Temperate continental, with slight ocean influence in the West, Mediterranean in the South/West and excessively continental in the North/East. Boundaries Romania’s borders total 3,149.9 km. Two thirds of them (2,064.4 km) are marked by rivers the Danube, the Prut, and the Tisza or follow the Black Sea shoreline, while the remaining one third (1,085.5 km) is traced over land. Romania's territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles into the Black Sea. Neighbours Romania borders on five countries, its sixth neighbour being the Black Sea. To the NE and E it borders on the Republic of Moldavia (681.3 km), to the N and E on Ukraine (649.4 km), to the SE on the Black Sea (193.5 km), to the S on Bulgaria (631.3 km), to the SW on Serbia (546,4 km) and to the W on Hungary (448.0 km). Between 1918 and 1991, over 40% of the borderline separated Romania from the USSR, at the time the largest country in Europe and the world.

Geography of Romania
Extending inland halfway across the Balkan Peninsula and covering a large elliptical area of 237,499 square kilometers (91,699 sq. mi.), Romania occupies the greater part of the lower basin of the Danube River system and the hilly eastern regions of the middle Danube basin. It lies on either side of the mountain systems collectively known as the Carpathians, which form the natural barrier between the two Danube basins. Romania's location gives it a continental climate, particularly in the Old Kingdom (east of the Carpathians and south of the Transylvanian Alps ) and to a lesser extent in Transylvania, where the climate is more moderate. A long and at times severe winter (December-March), a hot summer (April-July), and a prolonged autumn (August-November) are the principal seasons, with a rapid transition from spring to summer. In Bucharest Location: Southeastern Europe , bordering the Black Sea , between Bulgaria and Ukraine Geographic coordinates: 46 00 N, 25 00 E

Twenty-Five Lectures on Modern Balkan History
Lecture 1: Geography and ethnic geography of the Balkans to 1500
Preface Complete list of lectures Next lecture One can't understand the Balkans without understanding its ethnic groups, and one can't understand the ethnic groups and their history without knowing the influence of the region's geography.
Even the geographic extent of the "Balkan" region is a matter of controversy. Many scholars, especially those writing in the Cold War era, have included only the Communist states and linked them with Czechoslovakia, Poland and East Germany, while omitting Greece and ignoring Turkey and the Ottoman era. Other historians exclude Hungary, Croatia and other Habsburg lands, because of their "central" European character, supposedly contrary to Balkan themes. But the presence of contradictory themes is itself characteristically Balkan.
For the purposes of this course of lectures, the Balkan area includes Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Albania and Hungary. Most of this area was once under Ottoman Turkish rule; the rest under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The lectures will not deal with all of the Ottoman Empire, which extended into Asia and Africa, or other former Habsburg lands such as Czechoslovakia and parts of Poland.
    Physical geography
Balkan geography revolves around three features: the area's situation as a peninsula, its mountains, and its rivers.

WORLD'S BRIGHTEST GEOGRAPHIC WHIZ KIDS WILL COMPETE FOR INTERNATIONAL GEOGRAPHY TITLE
Each team will comprise three students who have excelled in their country's national geography competitions. The teams will meet to answer questions on physical, cultural and economic geography in two levels of competition. Current world champions, the United States, will defend their title against returning teams from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Singapore and the United Kingdom, as well as up to eight new countries whose names will be announced once their national competitions have been completed.
"Promoting geography education is one of the core missions of the National Geographic Society," said Terry Garcia, executive vice president for mission programs. "Studies have shown an alarming lack of geographic knowledge among the world's young people. The National Geographic World Championship provides a forum for top geography students from all corners of the globe to pit their wits against each other to determine which country's team is the international geography champion. Each student gains knowledge of the other competing countries' cultures and becomes a better global citizen for the experience."
The competition begins July 15, when all the teams will take a written test in the morning and battle one another in a challenging outdoor map-reading course in the afternoon. The three teams with the highest scores will meet on July 16 for the finals. They will answer questions in a game-show format moderated by Alex Trebek, host of the U.S. television quiz show "Jeopardy!"

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). Teach English to teens and young adults in school classrooms, or care for infants in a "special needs" ward in this old-world Eastern European country. You don't need special skills to teach conversational English skills, or to nurture a disabled or abandoned baby. No matter the circumstances of their birth, infants, toddlers and teens understand the nurturing touch and kind words of a caring adult. Deserving children in our Romanian host communities eagerly await your help today. "We thank you for all you have done ... The children live because the volunteers keep coming." ~ Dr. Delia Asoltanei, Tutova Hospital Romania Volunteer Program Dates Romania Volunteer Work Projects Nothing says "love" like a child's smile! In Tutova, you can help feed and care for babies who arrive at the "failure-to-thrive ward" shortly after birth. Each day, volunteers stimulate, love and nurture them in a way a parent would. Just playing with these children will make a huge difference in their lives. And you will benefit from the healing smiles and warm hugs of your small charges. Physicians can also be helpful, but note: flexibility is key, as equipment and medicine are scarce throughout this country.

There is also Transilvania with the well-known (fear-inspiring) legend of Dracula, the sweet wine and the tasty traditional cuisine. But above all, Romania is a beautiful country due to its people who are always happy when having guests. As the geographical area is not that wide, the variety of sights may strike you as surprising. In Romania, you can go to the seaside for a perfect tan but you may as well reach the highest peaks of the wild mountains, explore the deep caverns or the Danube Delta. And you still have choices, as you can spend your time enjoying the prosperity of a traditional household, with a good food and an excellent wine.
The host, the Romanian people, has old roots that go back in time about two thousand years. It is well-known for its hospitality and long-lived traditions.
