Take a trip to Romania When in Romania, the natural inclination is to concentrate only on the big sights. But to really experience Romania, you need to spend time to learn its history and discover its secrets. So, to "see" Romania at its best, you have to picture the body of yesterday and to feel the pulse of today. Take my advice: first learn its geography, "feel" the language and take a trip inside people's mind... Romania map Geography Carpathians Mountains are located in the center of the country, bordered on both sides by hills and plateaux; finally you discover the great plains of the outer rim. Forests cover over a quarter of the country and the fauna is one of the richest in Europe. Climate Romania has a temperate-continental climate with moderate features, characteristic for Central Europe. Hot summers. Cold winters. Very distinct seasons. If you visit the country during wintertime, take care at the abundant snowfalls, especially if you are in the mountain area. The annual average temperature depends on latitude and ranges from 8 degrees Celsius in the North and 11 degrees Celsius in the South, with temperatures of 2.6 degrees Celsius in the mountains and 11.7 degrees Celsius in the plain. However, the transition between summer and winter occurs gradually by the insertion of two other seasons called "spring" and "autumn".

Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Ukraine.
There is a certain symmetry in the physical structure of Romania.
The country forms a complex geographic unit centred on the Transylvanian Basin, around which the peaks of the Carpathian Mountains and their associated subranges and structural platforms form a series of crescents. Beyond this zone, the extensive plains of the south and east of the country, their potential increased by the Danube and its tributaries, form a fertile outer crescent extending to the frontiers.
There is great diversity in the topography, geology, climate, hydrology, flora, and fauna, and for millennia this natural environment has borne the imprint of a human population.
Since the late 19th century, in particular, Romania has undergone an economic and social transformation from an agricultural society to an urbanized, industrial society.

    http://www.virtualmontana.org/virtualmontana/romania/physical/intro.htm
Physical Geography The Banat Mountains Located in the south-west of Romania, this region, known better as the Banat mountainous area, stands out by its characteristic landscapes and climate.
The Banat Mountains are located in the north of Danube's Gorge (between Bazias and Cerna). Their favourable geographical position at the south-east extremity of the country determines an important tourist location particularly as they are on main routes coming from the border areas. The high degree of tourist activity is due to the complexity of the landscape particularly the geological and structural diversity. From this point of view Banat Mountains are a real "mosaic", a petrographic synthesis of all the Carpathic chain. Semenic Mountains (highest point 1446m) situated in the north-eastern part of the group. The variable slopes, aspects and climate of the region all combine to give conditions favourable to skiing. The Semenic Mountains are limited in the south by the Almajului Depression, which separates them from the Almajului Mountains (southern slopes bordering the Danube). They have flat peaks, with many levels, equivalent to very distinct levels of erosion, with the highest peak being 1226.

The decades-long rule of President Nicolae CEAUSESCU became increasingly draconian through the 1980s. He was overthrown and executed in late 1989. Former communists dominated the government until 1996 when they were swept from power. Much economic restructuring remains to be carried out before Romania can achieve its hope of joining the EU.
