Even though I generally travel to about 20 different countries every year, I rarely go to Europe. I see the continent as concrete-bound, tradition-ridden, class-oriented, socialistic, constipated and generally lame. That's not to say it isn't full of fine cafes, architecture and museums—but the place itself has the ambience of a decrepit museum. It's like a Disneyland without the order, friendliness, or cleanliness—and I'm no fan of Disneyland. With it's ingrained welfare state, high taxes and immense bureaucracy, Europe is on the slippery slope. In a couple of generations people in the Orient will view it as a place to recruit houseboys and chambermaids—a quaint petting zoo populated by backward peasants occupied mainly with whether they'd rather elect a Red or a Green politician to reallocate their diminishing wealth.

    Romania History and Culture
History The territory that is now Romania first appeared in history as Dacia. Most of its inhabitants were originally from the region of Thrace, in Greece; they were called Getae by the Greeks, and later, by the Romans, they were known as Dacians. Between 101 and 106 AD Dacia was conquered by the Roman emperor Trajan and incorporated into the Roman Empire as a province.

    75. The Romanian Culture - Motion Pictures
The beginnings of Romanian film making were due to amateurs. After World WarII, the film industry evolved within the general cultural policy.
    http://www.romania.fi/movies.html
Motion Pictures The first cinema projections in Romania, of Lumiere films, took placee on May 27, 1896 in the editorial offices of the newspaper of French expression "L'Independence Roumaine" in Bucharest; in May 1897 the first Romanian newsreels were produced and in 1912 the first Romanian feature film "Independenta României" ("Romania's Independence") was shown. After the collapse of communism, the much coveted freedom of creation could not be turned to best account, the way film makers had hoped, because of the economic crisis and the scrapping of state subsidies (so the film production has shrumk to 10-15 film per year). Aprominent role in the Romanian film industry today is played by directors Lucian Pintilie, Mircea Daneliuc, Dan Pita (who received the Silver Lion trophy at the Film Festival in Venice in 1992), Nae Caranfil, Radu Gabra a.o. Moreover, the competition with the newest foreign films brought over by an already powerful private distribution network deprives the Romanian film production of large audience. In the '70s and '80s about 120-150 films were imported every year, mainly from Central and East-European states. The number of cinema halls increased from 338, in 1938, to 6,275 in the '70s and that of the spectators followed a similar trend, from 41 million to 198 million persons. In the '90s the number of cinema halls and seats in cinema halls, as well as the number of film performances dropped dramatically. The number of spectators, 190-200 million persons per year, in the '80s decreased to 130 million in 1990 and only 12,5 million in 1996.

In Southwestern Romania their southern range merges into the Banat Mountains. West of this mountainous circle the Banat is situated, a lowland area, which merges into the Great Hungarian Plain. The Transylvanian Plateau, the Carpathian Mountains, and the lowlands in Western Romania are characterized by continental climate. Temperature varies a great deal in the course of a year, warm summers are contrasted by very cold winters. The areas near the Black Sea enjoy a maritime influence, which causes a more moderate range of temperatures. Precipitation is stronger during the warmer seasons, with the mountains getting the largest quantity.
