Bucharest - Culture BUCHAREST, Romania The capital of Romania, Bucharest once considered itself the Paris of the East, because of its Western-style architecture and stimulating social life. The luxurious style of life enjoyed by the upper class vanished after 1947 when the Communists came to power, but the city remained a major center of culture, industry, and trade. Bucharest is located in southern Romania on the Dîmbovita River, a tributary of the Danube River, at a meeting place of early trade routes across the Walachian Plain. Its climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters, when icy winds often blow from the north. Several parks and lakes north of the city provide recreational areas where residents can escape from summer heat. The original old town was situated on the small hills along the banks of the Dîmbovita. This area now contains the Patriarchate Church, the more modern Parliament Building, and the adjacent Union Square (Piata Unirii). To the north stretch the major boulevardsVictory Street (Calea Victoriei) and its extension, Kisselef Highway (Soseaua Kisselef)laid out in the mid-19th century. After World War I the city expanded rapidly, and wider streets were completednotably the north-south Balcescu and Magheru boulevards and the east-west Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and Republic ii boulevards. Lined with public buildings, stores, hotels, and apartments, they form the center of the modern city.

Timisoara - Culture BLOODY REVOLUTION Eastern Europe's season of fairy-tale, bloodless revolutions ended in chaos, violence, and death when it reached Romania in December 1989. Determined to remain in power at any cost, Romania's unpredictable and ruthless leader Nicolae Ceausescu ordered anti-government protests put down by force. A popular uprising in the city of Timisoara was met with bullets. But fighting spread to other cities. For more than a week, the country descended into seeming anarchy, as the world followed along on television. On Christmas day, Ceausescu and his wife Elena were executed, and the violence stopped. A National Salvation Front led by a coalition of dissidents, military officers, and second-tier Communist officials pronounced Romania free. METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL Built between 1936 and 1946 by Ioan Traianescu, Timisoara's chief Orthodox cathedral is located at the end of Blvd. 16th December 1989. This 268 foot-tall, narrow brick church mixes Byzantine style with Moldovian influences. The church interior accommodates 5,000 and has a tall dome at the center. In the basement is a display of the 16th to 19th century icons ob wood and glass, beautifully preserved medieval stained glass, as well as books and other church objects. Admission is free, just ask one of the priests for a tour. They are more than happy to show you around.Basement icon collection, daily 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. OLD TOWN HALL It is the oldest building in town (18th century) built in the Renaissance and Baroque style

Preserving the ties with the Byzantine stock, the culture of the Modern Age manifests an increasing tendency to follow the European artistic movements which send in turn echoes of the Renaissance, Romanticist, Academist, or Impressionistic trends. After the 1859 union of Wallachia and Moldavia, the foundations were laid in Iasi and Bucharest for artistic higher education, which would decisively contribute to the development of arts in Romania. Nicolae Grigorescu and Ion Andreescu worked for a time at Barbizon, alongside the artists who pioneered the Impressionist movement. These two painters and Stefan Luchian - who contributes elements akin to Art Nouveau and expressionism - are the founders of modern Romanian painting. They will be hollowed, in the first half of the 20th century, by great personalities who opened as many new vistas in Romanian painting. Having made their debut before World War II, several artists also continue their activity in the following decades, succeeding - despite all adversities in the postwar totalitarian period - to enhance the substance of the national artistic heritage: Ion Tuculescu, Henri Catargi, Alexandru Ciucurencu, Margareta Sterian, Corneliu Baba. If Brancusi revitalized the abstract expression of archaic art, Dimitrie Paciurea heads for those figurative and fantastic mythological representations that have functions in the old symbolical repertories but which still prove to be pertinent.

"Romania participated in the Holocaust, and we have to face history," the minister, Razvan Teodorescu, said at a ceremony marking the inauguration of a teaching manual on the Holocaust. But tensions resurfaced in July when Romanian President Ion Iliescu was quoted by an Israeli paper as saying, "the Holocaust was not unique to the Jewish population in Europe. Many others, including Poles, died in the same way."

Soviet occupation following World War II led to the formation of a communist "peoples republic" in 1947 and the abdication of the king.
The decades-long rule of President Nicolae CEAUSESCU became increasingly draconian through the 1980s. He was overthrown and executed in late 1989.
Former communists dominated the government until 1996 when they were swept from power. Much economic restructuring remains to be carried out before Romania can achieve its hope of joining the EU.
