Query Letters That Grab Attention
by Julie Ortolon According to Harlequin Assistant Editor Brenda Chin, "editors hate reading query letters as much as authors hate writing them." Consequently, many editors toss unsolicited letters into a file folder. When the folder won't hold anymore, they sit down with a resigned groan and read all of the letters at once. For a letter to get a positive response out of a stack that big, it must be more than well written. It must be outstanding. At a West Houston RWA workshop on query letter writing, Brenda shared some tips on how to dazzle an editor into that all important yes. As an assistant editor for Harlequin Love and Laughter, and Harlequin Temptation, Brenda advises authors to create a stationary that says something about themselves and their manuscript. Big fonts and lots of "white" space win points at first glance. For the opening line of a query, Brenda suggested using one of the following approaches:

Author of She Loves Me Not and Slightly Settled
Critically acclaimed award-winning author Wendy Corsi Staub is thrilled to announce a career milestone: in February, 2003, thanks to her loyal readers, she joined the ranks of New York Times bestselling authors! In the sixteen months since Pinnacle books released my last original suspense novel, SHE LOVES ME NOT, I've heard from countless readers who marveled that they'd never guessed the killer's identity...and requested that I "hurry up" and write another one just like it. Thank you, everyone, for the overwhelmingly enthusiastic support, and for checking out the August 2003 reissue of my first suspense novel, DEARLY BELOVED.
Now, at long last, I'm pleased to present KISS HER GOODBYE, with a June 1 publication date from Pinnacle Books. The book will also appear in a large print edition, and has already been selected as a featured title in the "Get Caught Reading At Sea" promotion, as well as a featured selection in the Mystery Guild, Doubleday, Rhapsody, and Literary Guild book clubs.
Like SHE LOVES ME NOT, KISS HER GOODBYE is set against the familiar backdrop of all-American suburbia: land of soccer moms, SUVs, yellow school buses, pizza delivery, and orthodontist appointments. This is the stuff domestic dreams are made of...until murder comes to town.
