A 7 page essay on the unequal and unjust roles assigned to women in Greek society as expressed in mythology. The writer focuses on plays by Aeschylus, Euripides and Homer, and on the characters Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, Odysseus, Calypso, and Helen. Roman Mythology
The roman mythology is the combination of the beliefs, the rituals, and the observances of supernatural occurences by the ancient Romans from early periods until Christianity finally completely replaced the native religions of the Roman Empire. The religion of the early Romans was so changed by the addition of numerous and conflicting beliefs in later times, and by the assimilation of a vast amount of Greek mythology, that it cannot be ever reconstructed precisely. This was because of the extensive changes in the religion before the literary tradition began. The origins of those myhts were in most cases unknown to the early Roman writers on religion. On the other hand classical writers, such as the poet Ovid in his Fasti (Calendar), were strongly influenced by Hellenistic models, and in their works they frequently employed Greek beliefs to fill gaps in the Roman tradition. Roman mythology
Roman mythology is the set of beliefs, rituals, and other observances concerning the supernatural held or practiced by the ancient Romans from early periods until Christianity finally completely supplanted the native religions of the Roman Empire The original religion of the early Romans was so modified by the addition of numerous and conflicting beliefs in later times, and by the assimilation of a vast amount of Greek mythology , that it cannot be reconstructed precisely. Because extensive changes in the religion had already taken place before the literary tradition began, its origins were in most cases unknown to the early Roman writers on religion, such as the 1st century BC scholar Marcus Terentius Varro . Other classical writers, such as the poet Ovid in his Fasti (Calendar), were strongly influenced by Hellenistic models, and in their works they frequently employed Greek beliefs to fill gaps in the Roman tradition.

Through the media of literature, public and domestic art, monuments and even topography, these myths were deployed in a variety of ways and to a variety of purposes, including the construction of ethnic identity (Romanitas), the projection of political propaganda, and the affirmation or contestation of traditional gender roles and social values. Students will examine these issues, focusing on the Augustan city, Greek and Roman literary representations of Rome's early development, and the use of Roman mythology as a technique of 'Romanisation' in the provinces. Assessment A 750-word seminar report, 1750-word case study, and a 2500-word essay.

Adapted From: Mythology For Dummies Roman religion and, therefore, Roman mythology, was a long, drawn-out process of bringing together the gods, stories, and rituals of various cultures and making them Roman. People who study religion or mythology for a living call this syncretism. A Roman might nod to his Lares and Penates (original Roman gods) in the morning, pray to Isis (an Egyptian goddess) at lunchtime, attend a feast in honor of Heracles (a Greek hero), in the afternoon, have his future told by a haruspex (a priest who had learned the Etruscan art of liver-based fortune telling) later in the day, and ended the day attending a meeting of the cult of Mithras (a Persian deity whose followers met in caves). By doing all of this, this Roman wasn't betraying his culture; he was being a good Roman! After all, what was the point of conquering the world if you don't have cool new gods and cool new stories to show for it?

JUPITER
Jupiter (or Jove, but known as Zeus to the Greeks) overthew his Father Saturn (in Greek, Cronus). He then drew lots with his brothers Poseidon and Hades to determine who would be the supreme ruler of the gods. Jupiter won the draw and became the ruler of Olympus and the patron of the ancient Roman state. Jupiter was the rain god and lord of the sky, making his name an appropriate one for the king of the planets. His weapon is a thunderbolt which he hurls at those who displease him. He is married to Hera but, is famous for his many affairs. He is also known to punish those that lie or break oaths. This Statue of Zeus (Jupiter) was created by the famous Greek sculptor Pheidius during the 5th century B.C. It was considered one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. The statue stood for over 800 years in the temple of Zeus at Olympia in Greece, until the Roman Emperor Theodosius I proclaimed Christianity the state religion, and ordered all statues and likenesses of the pagan gods torn down.
