Friday, June 11, 2004 Homework Help Forum Homework Help Experts History of Valentines Day Valentines Day is a celebration of love. It is the day, when people show each other their affection, and show each other how much they mean to each other. But there is some history involved. Sources say that there are several roots. It is not 100% known which is the right one. There are three different possibilities which are quite similar to each other - and even parallels can be found between them. We like to explain the one which is closest to our today's celebration. It's roots go back to the 5th century and the Roman Empire. Romans celebrated the Luperican festival at those times on February 15th. It was a feast to honor the goddess Juno, the goddess of marriage. And it was also a celebration of fertility and to court and meet a potential lover or mate. In the year of 496 pope Gelasius prohibited this pagan event, and replaced it with a similar but more church compliant festival. To complete the meaning of it, he chose the martyred saint Valentine to be the patron of this newly established celebration. Saint Valentine got executed by the Roman Emperor Claudius. His crime was to help, and to marry young couples against the Emperors wish. It is reported Valentine fell in love with his jailer's daughter before he got executed. She visited him daily, and it was him - so it says - who sent the very first Valentines greeting. He signed his final note with the words: "From your Valentine" If this was true, then this phrase lasts throughout all the centuries until even today.

Emily McPherson
February 23rd, 1999, 6:45 p.m. ET Have you ever found yourself telling a friend or relative, "Carpe diem," ('seize the day') and wondered where it came from? Well, many people might think that it is Spanish, but in truth it is Latin. There is also the fact that Spanish, being one of the Romance languages, is derived from Latin. You may also have heard quid pro quo, ex post facto, ad hoc, and de facto. Latin has had a tremendous influence on several languages. Do you ever wonder how or why? The first thing to explore is where Latin started out. It grew out of the tongue that was originally brought by the Indo-European people who migrated to eastern and southern Italy around the end of the Trojan War (1193 B.C.). It evolved into Latin and then was spoken mainly by the Romans in their city of Rome and the region around it. As the Romans were increased their mighty empire, Latin slowly expanded to the remaining sector around the western Mediterranean Sea. The following are the different periods of ancient literary Latin: the Early Period, the Golden Age, the Silver Age, and the Late Latin Period. Each period changed Latin and how more forms were added to the language. There was also Medieval Latin and Modern Latin. Finally, a look at what the Latin language has become at the end of the 20th century: how we use it and what we think of it. Latin is a part of the Italic branch of Indo-European languages. It was greatly influenced by the non-Indo-European Etruscan language from central Italy, the Celtic tongues from northern Italy, and especially by the Greek language. But Latin did not begin in Italy. It was brought there in prehistoric times by Indo-European peoples who moved there from northern Europe. When brought to Italy, Latin was spoken mainly in Rome and the surrounding area.

    Colonies #1: A General Overview
A colony is a place ruled by a foreign country. When we think of colonies we generally think of the colonies ruled by the Europeans, like America, Australia and Canada. The beginning of these European colonies happened during a time known as "The Age of Discovery". Long before this though, the Romans had colonies as far away as the Middle East.
    Roman Colonies
I expect you know all about some Roman colonies. Take for instance the Middle East. At the time of Jesus it was ruled by the Romans. That is why Jesus was taken before Pontius Pilate to be tried. Pontius Pilate was the ruler at that time. They also ruled a great deal of Europe, and you can see many ancient Roman ruins throughout places like Great Britain. When the Roman Empire was at it's strongest, it stretched all the way from England, in the West, to the Persian Gulf in the East. Considering that they didn't have firearms, or cannons, and that they used sailing ships, that was an amazingly large chunk of land for them to control. Most Historians will agree that it was too big, and that is one of the main reasons the Roman Empire eventually lost all its power.
