Introduction
The Romans preserved much of the Greek culture and blended it with their own traditions to give us the Classical ideal. Their military conquests brought an empire to Rome that even surpassed that of Alexander the Great. For nearly a thousand years all roads led to Rome. From a small village on the Tiber River to the greatest Empire (Maps) the world had ever known, Rome left a rich heritage for all who followed. Back to Top

Hagia Sophia
Hagia Sophia was an early basilica erected by Constantine at 325 and restored many times since then. The name of the church symbolized the second divine attribute of the Holy Trinity. Sophia, which means "Holy Wisdom", was a name given to Christ by 4th century theologians. The original church was destroyed in 404 AD. Emperor Theodosius II built a new church in 415 AD. During the rebellion of Monophysites in 532, Hagia Sophia was destroyed. Emperor Justinian built a third church, finished in 537. When the Islamic Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453, the church was converted into a mosque. Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum in 1935.

The Project for the New American Century argues that the US should extend its global leadership by increasing military spending, maintaining strategic nuclear superiority, developing and deploying global missile defenses, and controlling the new “international commons” of space and “cyberspace.” Progressive Internationalism: A Democratic National Security Strategy (October 30, 2003)
The Democrat National Security Strategy promises to replace the Republican “go-it-alone” policy with a strategy founded on “muscular internationalism.” This new strategy requires the “bold exercise of American power, not to dominate but to shape alliances and international institutions that share a common commitment to liberal values.” ( Progressive Policy Institute
The New Regionalism: Drifting Toward Multi-Polarity (June 7, 2004)
With the “collapse” of its campaign in Iraq, the United States faces a “decline in American credibility and the worldwide recognition of its military limitations.” The article predicts that regional powers such as China and Russia, backed by military power, will move toward multi-polarism, “a containment policy against the United States.” ( Power and Interest News Report The Illusions of Empire (June, 2004)

Science IMPORTANT New Structure for the Ancient History Sourcebook Since January 24 1999, the Internet Ancient History Sourcebook has been completely reorganized. Each of the main sections had became too large to maintain as one file. To see the new arrangement go to the Main Index The three older index files were called Ancient Near East Greece Rome (asbook3.html). All remained available until October 2000, but have now been removed. Too many links had gone bad, and as such the pages generated too many complaints about bad links, even though there was indication that they were no longer being updated and updated linkes were available within the new structure.
