Provinces of the Roman Empire: European-Mediterranean Cultural Interferences
Le culture delle province romane: interazioni euromediterranee
– History – Archaeology – Religious Studies –
The graduate school aims at studying in a comparative perspective the local changes in those regions that came under the direct rule and administration of the Roman Empire during its expansion, i.e. the formation of the provinces, or into the sphere of Rome’s influence. It will be the central task of the graduate school to develop new models of description for these processes. The term "interference" signals the abandonment of a centralist perspective. "Interferences" are not only relations of exchange, disturbance and reinforcement between spatially differentiated cultures, but they are also part of local and regional "cultural systems". Such "interferences" can also affect technical and organisational knowledge and practices such as patterns of rule, conceptions of the world and of religions. In a geographical perspective, Africa, Greece Gaul and the Northwestern provinces as well as Italy itself (Latium, Etruria) are at the centre of our attention. Within this geographical frame, it is the interaction of settlement-geographical, military-geographical and political-organisational factors with the respective material culture, with religion and with conceptions of rule that interest us most. The collaboration within a European research group, comprising specialists in their fields from Italy and Germany, offers the chance to review both national and European historical traditions of research.

The Roman Empire > Customer Review #1: Excellent Further Reading

This is a great book on the early empire. Wells covers the time from the fall of the republic concentrating on the reign of Augustus to about the time of Commodus. He does a very good job of explaining the time of Trajan and Hadrian and how the empire was consolidated and at peace for an extended period of time. There is a good balance of the life of the Emperors, everyday life in Rome and the provinces, the army, and the senate. The best thing about this book is the 41 page further reading section. This has been my main source to reference for books on ancient Rome. It is not just an annotated bibliography; Wells has topical sections like Roman coinage, imperial cult, treason, financial administration, town planning, Jewish sources, etc. and in each section lists recommended books. There are also ten pages of maps, plates, and a useful timeline. An excellent book to get you started on reading about the early Roman Empire.

It continues through the the fashioning of clay into utensils and oracles, the smelting of metals, the development of farming, the creation of rituals, villages, cities and kings, through the successive births of three great monotheistic religions that changed the world. The sheer quantity of objects - skull fragments, pottery shards, arrowheads, ossuaries, figurines, beads, seals, etc. - can be overwhelming and, after a while, numbing. How many oil lamps can you view at once? But if you sift through these rows and rooms of display cases and models you will come across so many extraordinary finds they begin to feel ordinary. So, using my very subjective sense of awe, I'd like to submit my own list of local archeology's greatest hits:
