The centre is more recent from the geological viewpoint, consisting essentially of sandy and chalky soils from the Triassic and Jurassic periods. Books
History
The Twelve Caesars (Penguin Classics)
Suetonius (translated by Robert Graves)

Suetonius was a lawyer, writer, and was secretary to the emperor Hadrian. Suetonius lived during the height of the Roman Empire and died in 140 AD. This book is a classic that anyone interested in the Roman Empire should read. Suetonius, is witty and opinionated, and his book is a fascinating mix of historical documentation and gossip.
The Conquest of Gaul

Julius Caesar (translated by S. A. Hanford)

At some point every Latin student reads at least part of The Conquest of Gaul , which is perhaps more commonly known as The Gallic Wars written by Caesar himself. Like most the "Penguin Classics," this edition is a thoughtful translation and has an excellent historical introduction.

At the height of the Roman Empire an opulent city stood at the eastern frontier on the most important crossing of the Euphrates River. Called Zeugma ("Junction") after the bridge that linked its opposite banks, the city disappeared into history after the empire fell. Now its remains are about to disappear beneath a mammoth reservoir. This program records the frantic scramble to recover the glory that was Zeugma. Buried by centuries of silt and dirt, Zeugma was long neglected by archeologists, until the rising edifice of a nearby hydroelectric dam forced them to act quickly before the site was flooded. What they found dazzled them. NOVA's film team was on the scene to record how the traditionally painstaking work of excavation had to yield to emergency measures. With only six weeks to finish a dig that would normally take years, researchers made a rough-and-ready map of the site by measuring magnetic fluctuations at the surface, revealing faint traces of ruined walls, streets, and houses below.

Mystery of seabed resolved with 2,000-year old ship's discovery
Marciana Marina, Italy, Aug 24, IRNA A mystery which has baffled generations of local fishermen on the Tuscan island of Elba was finally resolved this week, when a 2,000-year old perfectly preserved Roman shipwreck was discovered on the seabed.
For years fishermen complained that their nets snagged in an area of the sea which, according to nautical maps, had a smooth, muddy base, wrote ANSA's Karma Hickman from Marciana Marina, on Friday.
The size of the doliums - around two meters high and five meters in diameter - has led experts to put the length of the boat at around 22 meters. It also convinced them that the wreck dates back to some time during the first Roman empire. Significantly, the positioning of the dolium suggests that the still-hidden ship is perfectly preserved beneath the mud. Furthermore, the depth of the ship means it has probably not been disturbed by wreck-robbers in search of items to sell on the international black market - a common problem for Italy's archaeological heritage.
"This is the first time a complete, inviolate wreck has been ound," Michelangelo Zecchini, an archaeologist who works for the Forum UNESCO commented. "However in itself just the number of containers and their superb condition makes this a truly astounding discovery".

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Few slick, made-for-television mini-series hold a candle to the intense drama of real history. That's what Ancient Mysteries ' viewers will discover when a North Carolina State University history professor helps recreate the story of "Rome's Lost Legions" on the A&E Network at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 12. The episode is hosted by Leonard Nimoy. Dr. S. Thomas Parker, whose research on the frontiers of the Roman Empire is internationally respected, will trace the last days of the battle in the Teutoburg Forest of Germany, where three Roman legions were wiped out in 9 A.D. Parker said, "The outcome of this battle has enormous historical importance. With the loss of their legions, Rome gave up the hope of conquering Germany and pulled back across the Rhine River. The Rhine became a permanent cultural dividing line between east and west in Europe." Parker said the exact location of the battlefield had been under scholarly dispute until recently when an amateur German archeologist, using a high-tech metal detector, found a concentration of metal objects just under the mantle of earth in the forest. Excavations revealed a trove of Roman coins dating up to 9 A.D. Further digs produced other artifacts associated with
