N o one is really sure when the first roller skates were used. It is likely that the first roller skates were an adaptation of ice skates and were used for transportation rather than sport. The first recognized inventor of roller skates was a Belgian manufacturer named Joseph Merlin. He produced the first roller skates with metal wheels in 1760. He presented his invention in London at a formal ball and rolled across the floor playing an expensive violin. The story is told that because his skates were unable to be turned or stopped, he glided gracefully into a huge mirror and suffered serious injuries. The first time roller skates were "successfully" seen in public was in 1849, when Frenchman Louis Legrange used roller skates to simulate ice skating in the play Le Prophete. He created his skates by mounting tiny rollers down the center of ice skates. In the mid 1800s, a number of other inventors took up the call and many different types of skates were produced. All, however, suffered the same problems Merlin's skates had: the inability to be effectively controlled or stopped. New Yorker James Plimpton solved the problem of controlling skates in 1863. Plimpton's skates used a rubber cushion to anchor the axles. This cushion would compress when the body was leaned, enabling the wheels of the skate to turn slightly when the skater shifted his or her weight. Plimpton's design is considered the basis for the modern roller skate.

The first skates were called "Skeelers". In 1760, Joseph Merlin, a Londaner, made the first pair of metal wheeled "boots". This invention traveld from Berlin, Germany to France, and then to the United States in 1863. The first public skating rink was in Chicago. It opened in 1902. Scott and Brennan Olson, two hockey playing brothers, made the modern day "in-line" skates. Roller Skates Roller Blade (In-LineSkates)

Athletes are given the option to compete in artistic events and speed events. In addition to the choice of sport, athletes may choose to use in-line or quad skates, depending on their strengths. As in all Special Olympics Sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to the athletes' ability level, age and gender. For the artistic competition, men and women compete separately. The competition is further divided into four levels, each level progressively more difficult and requiring different elements. Speed events offer a variety of distances for all skill levels, as well as relay and slalom events. Roller skating was inaugurated at the 1987 World Games. That year the 22 participants were all United States athletes. In 1999, the roller skating competition boasted 108 athletes from 14 countries. Roller Skating Associations (RSAs) in the United States have been instrumental in the development and inclusion of Special Olympics athletes and coaches. These associations include: Roller Skating Rink Operators, Society of Roller Skating Teachers of America, Speed Coaches Association, Roller Hockey Coaches Association, and Roller Skating Supplies and Manufacturers. Roller skating is in the winter sports schedule for Special Olympics Texas with statewide competition at the Winter Games in December. The following events are sanctioned by Special Olympics Texas and are to be offered at all local, area and chapter competitions. The actual events scheduled and conducted at local, area and chapter competitions will be determined by a minimum number of entries in each event.

Athletes eligibility and classification
Roller skating events are open to both men and women, but they compete separately. All athletes participating in the Special Olympics speed skating competitions must meet the Special Olympics eligibility requirements . That is all athletes must be diagnosed as having mental retardation.
Playing area
  • Artistic roller skating . The skaters compete on a surface that is similar to an ice arena. The size of the ice surface is dependent upon what the facility has to offer. Roller speed skating . The skaters race around an oval track. The distance of the track can be 200m or 400m.
Rules
The rules for both artistic roller skating and roller speed skating competitions are based on the Federation International de Roller Skating (FIRS) and the National Governing Body (NGB). Artistic roller skating Special Olympics offers four artistic roller skating events: (a) ladies and mens singles; (b) pairs; (c) dance; and (d) school figures. Singles, pairs, and dance events are skated to music and judged for their technical and artistic merit.
