Behind Every Great Skater - Megan Faulkner, Tara's coach
Megan Faulkner, Tara's long time and current coach from Houston, TX, has coached Tara for the better part of a decade now, a partnership that began well before Tara's victory at the Olympics in 1998. This interview is the first in our series of exciting articles that we will be bringing you here at TaraFans.com. Megan took the time to share her insights with us on a variety of topics spanning Tara's entire career, from roller skating at age three, to her current professional life.
Steve: When did you first start working with Tara and what could she already do as a skater? Did she show any strengths or weaknesses due to her previous background in roller skating as a child?
Megan: I started working with Tara November of 1991. She could do the axel, double sal and toe, and cheated double flip and lutz. She didn't have a double loop as that is the last jump that roller skaters learn. From roller skating she was a very strong spinner.
Steve: What was Tara's first event under your leadership?

    Special Olympics History
    Special Olympics Philosophy
The Special Olympics is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of it's creation this year. In July 1968 Senator Ted Kennedy announced the establishment of Special Olympics, Inc. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was the motivating force behind the Special Olympics Program, and is still active in the organization. For the mentally retarded, sports and physical activity are the quickest, surest road to health, growth and self-confidence. The retarded have always been told "you can't do it." Special Olympics contribute to a more positive self image. The increasing slef-confidence then carries over into all aspects of the Special Olympians' lives, helping the individuals to live more independent and satisfying lives. Special Olympics is sports in it's truest sense. The goal is not only to win, but to try; to experience, not to conquer. Special Olympics is unique in that everyone has a chance to win, since competition is grouped by age, se and also ability divisions. No time is too slow, not distance is too small, to earn a medal, ribbon, hug or sincere "way to go." No records are broken in Special Olympics, except those for courage, determination and sportsmanship. The success of Special Olympics has been made possible by the love and dedication of thousands of volunteers who know that the mentally retarded have important contributions to make to society.

    ffffffffffff hhhhhhhhhh History of
Special Olympics I This day camp spawned Special Olympics in the United States and around the world. At the first International Games in 1968 1,000 athletes from 26 states and Canada competed in track and field, swimming, and floor hockey. The growth of Special Olympics since that time has been overwhelming - nearly one million athletes are now training and competing in more than 140 countries and 54 U.S. chapters. These athletes are aided by 500,000 volunteers and 250,000 coaches. The spirit of Special Olympics - skill, courage, sharing, and joy - incorporates universal values that transcend all boundaries of geography, nationality, political philosophy, gender, age, race, or religion. History of Special Olympics Pennsylvania
Special Olympics Pennsylvania became an official chapter of Special Olympics Inc. 1970 after hosting a track and field event for 135 participants. The growth of Special Olympics here in Pennsylvania has mirrored the growth worldwide. In 51 local programs from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, we have over 27,000 athletes training and competing in over 20 sports.

This year, the theme is Women and Sports - Champions Forever! Today, more than ever before, girls and women can participate in all kinds of sports and physical activities! You don't have to look very far to find examples of women who are sport champions. Who can forget the Canadian Women's National Hockey Team's gold medal victory after an exciting match against their American rivals at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City? Believe it or not, not too long ago, running shoes and playing fields were for boys and men only. Girls and women were not allowed to participate in sport activities! Over the years, they had to work really hard to get into the game and play the sports that we take for granted today. A real obstacle race...

Rebecca, Laura, and I are triplets... My two twin sisters have Down's Syndrome and this has led my family to be very active in Special Olympics. With my sisters competing and my parents and I coaching and my younger sister volunteering or competing as a special partner in unified events. The sports we compete in are: Cycling, Track and Field, Speed Skating, Swimming, and roller-skating. The following is our involvement with Special Olympics to the best that I can remember. I'll might be off a year or two with some things.

In 1991, my father was a cycling coach for the Massachusetts team for the International Games in Minneapolis. In 1995, my mother and sisters represented Massachusetts at the World Games in New Haven CT, for cycling. In 1999, my mother represented Team USA as part of the Massachusetts delegation as the Cycling Coach for the games in Durham, NC. In 2001, Laura represented Team USA-New England in Speed Skating, and Dad was one of the Speed Skating coaches for the games in Anchorage Alaska.

biography By her third birthday, future Olympic figure skating champion Tara Lipinski was convinced walking and running were inefficient ways of moving around. She preferred going faster. Roller-skating was the mode of choice. With wheels beneath her feet, Tara could fly. The fearless toddler eventually entered several age-group competitions, winning a regional championship in New Jersey by age 5. And Tara liked roller hockey even though it attracted more boys than girls. Of course, it was only a matter of time before Tara noticed how fast the kids on ice skates were going- very.

Bumps in the road to Gold
The 1997/1998 season started out on a bumpy note for Tara as she finished 2nd at Skate America to fellow American Michelle Kwan. The road became even bumpier as Tara struggled against illness and bad blades to finish 2nd at the Trophy Lalique competition in Paris. Tara proved herself capable of a major comeback just over a month later, however, becoming the first woman to successfully defend her Champion Series Final crown with hard-fought victory over Germany's Tanja Szewczenko in Munich. Tara returned to her roots in Philadelphia for her 2nd title defense of the season at the US National Championships. After a fluke fall in her short program, Tara stood in 4th with a spot on the Olympic team hanging in the balance. Proving herself to be as resilent as she is talented, Tara performed an impressive long program and moved up to take the Silver medal along with a spot on the 1998 Olympic Team.

Out of Miami, Rodriguez Is Warming to Ice
    By Amy Shipley
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Monday, February 2, 1998; Page D1
"I think every athlete dreams of going to the Olympics," says Jennifer Rodriguez, a former in-line skater turbed speedskater. (Dan Currier/AP)
Despite her early difficulties, Rodriguez didn't merely get the hang of speedskating. She went from awful to one of the nation's best in 28 months. Several weeks ago, she won a spot on the U.S. speedskating team, making the transition that her boyfriend, KC Boutiette, also made, going from an elite in-line skater to a world-class speedskater. The satisfaction of this achievement is enhanced by her background. When the Games get underway with Saturday's Opening Ceremonies, she will become the first Hispanic athlete to compete in a Winter Olympics. She also is believed to be the only Miamian. Rodriguez's father, Emilio, was born in Cuba; her mother, from Buffalo, is not of Latin descent. "It's not my main focus but it's in the back of my head," Rodriguez, 21, said after a practice session at the M-Wave, the speedskating venue. "But when I heard I was the only person from Miami to compete in the Winter Olympics and plus to be the only Cuban, that's a really neat thing."

The Friday Night Skate, that weekly nocturnal gathering of inline humanity that rolls through the San Francisco every Friday has reached a new milestone and also got to participate in San Francisco's Olympic history. The Olympic Torch Run Ceremony organizers needed a group of swift, enthusiastic people to make the public aware of when and where the torch was coming. Five teams of skaters volunteered the time and energy to help get things rollin'. When you saw people lining the streets to watch the torch runners, it was due in large part to the work and determination of this group of skaters who met the torch as it came into San Francisco and worked the entire route to the Embarcadero getting people out there to share this exciting moment in history. As the torch approached downtown San Francisco, the Midnight Rollers began to gather at the Ferry Building in the Embarcadero. At 8:15 the skaters began making their way to the TransAmerica Building at Columbus and Montgomery. They lined both sides of the street and all the intersections as the torch runners came close. The crowd roared as the runners passed by.
