Boys and girls take part in a roller hockey clinic at Eatontown Roller Blading and Hockey Center, Route 35. But then the roller hockey team her 7-year-old son, Joshua Goellner, was playing on, the Flames, needed a coach. Conover, Oceanport, bravely volunteered. The rink has been in business since 1972 under different management and owners, says itsgeneral manager, Richard Jones. Sunday through Wednesday, the center runs recreational hockey program with leagues for adults and children, says Jones. Thursday through Saturday, the rink offers public skating, or the facility is rented out for private parties.

Evan Pastorelle, 6, goes through a stickhandling drill. In 1979, when traditional roller skating was a trendy sport, Monmouth County had seven rinks that offered public skating, Jones says. Now, he says, Eatontown is the only rink in the county offering public skating to all types of music. (The public skating is operated by John Fields and Richard Britt.) "People saw quick dollar signs and opened roller rinks," he says. "It was a fad."

The unveiling and dedication of The Tyler Cancer Bell was held Nov. 2, 2002 on the northeast portion of the Rose Rudman Trail. The Tyler Cancer Bell pavilion is a place of honor and remembrance for cancer patients, their families, and caregivers. A unique example of civic accomplishment made possible by public and private contributions, the Tyler Cancer Bell was the vision of Cecilia Bronston, a young mother and cancer patient. The City of Tyler donated the land for construction of the pavillion in Rose Rudman Park and contributed $5000 toward construction costs. Remaining costs of more than $15,000 were covered by private donations and in-kind contributions, many of them made in honor or memory of cancer patients. The East Texas Communities Foundation served as fiscal agent for the project. The Tyler Cancer Bell pavillion features an antique bronze bell cast in Troy, New York, in 1856. Visitors are encouraged to ring the bell

When the demonstration is taking place on crowded Main Street or the front steps of the courthouse, however, business owners and city officials find little to admire.
Kyle Sanders, 16, of Ellsworth demonstrates his skateboard finesse on the grounds of the YMCA. Sanders is one of many who would benefit from a planned skateboard park. Some of the reasons appear above: signs erected at Ellsworth High School (top center) and two Ellsworth businesses.
STAFF PHOTOS BY DON RADOVICH Now that the ice has melted, business owners, the city and the YMCA are hoping to turn a good idea from last winter into a saving grace for summer.
Last winter, volunteers connected with the James Russell Wiggins Down East Family YMCA created an ice skating rink on an empty lot the Y owns next door. It was an instant hit.
Now the Y is proposing that the city help turn that lot into a recreational area for children and teenagers, including a skateboard park that will lure skateboarders away from crowded sidewalks, granite steps and front stoops.
