  • Evolution of Roller Skating A Belgian inventor named Joseph Merlin introduced the first recorded roller skate in 1760. And, what an introduction he made! He wore his new skates to a party in London, where he crashed into an expensive mirror. He wasn't very interested in skating after this experience. However, other inventors produced some roller skate models, most with in-line wheels to imitate an ice skating blade. Add/View Comments

What you need: A pair of good, sturdy skates, knee, elbow and wrist pads and a leash/restraint for your dog that restrains from under the armpits, rather than the neck. (I recommend The Original Sporn Halter Note on the safety equipment:
I usually use only wrist guards, and am a very good skater, but even I have been taken out twice when Francis spotted a cat I didn't see first hiding behind a fence or bush (and I was carrying stuff and only had one hand freenever do that!!). And when a dog off a leash comes up to you and starts trouble it is harder to maintain control. There is this risk. Just be aware of it. You can't do this unless you are not afraid of falling and know how to take a fall in stride. Even if you usually don't wear all safety gear when skating, using all pads to start skating with your dog, especially if you're not certain of your own ability to skate and control your dog at the same time, is a good move. Did you even know you can get a pad to protect your tailbone? For more information about possible hazards and preventative measures you can take, visit

Public Awareness: In-line Skating Safety The following information is excerpted from the Childhood Injury Control newsletter, published by the Edmonton Board of Health. The illustrations which accompany this article are also courtesy of the Edmonton Board of Health.Editor. In-line skating, or "rollerblading, is a great recreational and conditioning activity for both children and adults. The popularity of in-line skating has grown at an incredible rate over the last three years, with an estimated one million Canadians now enjoying the sport. In-line skates are a cross between roller skates and ice skates. They are called in-line skates because each skate has three to five round wheels in a line, or single row, instead of paired wheels or a blade· The narrower, smoother wheels make in-line skates much faster than traditional roller skates· Injuries from in-line skating Like other sporting activities, in-line skating has its risks. The typical injuries from in-line skating include broken wrists, chipped elbows and bruised knees. Most injuries from in-line skating occur when the skater looses control. The injury rate is highest for people who are skating for the first time. The Canadian picture Data collected by the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRRP) between April 1990 and April 1993 presents a picture very similar to that of the Alberta Children's Hospital. CHIRRP data, collected from 10 children's hospitals and two general hospitals across Canada, also provides insight into where most in-line injuries occur and the most common types of injuries.

Roller blading in New York City
Question
Are there any organized roller blading events in New York (like there are in Paris on Friday evenings, 3-hour tours through the whole city) for intermediate to advanced skaters. If yes, where do they start, are there contact details, web site info etc.
Thanks a lot! Answer Julia, Empire Skate Club (www.empireskate.org) runs regular group tours around the city - the following is an exerpt from their website: Group Skates Recreational skating is by far the most popular form of skating among our members, and we organize and lead regular group skates and other rec events. This includes group day skates, night skates, and weekend skate trips in and around NYC and the surrounding tri-state area. (Check out our calendar for a complete schedule of upcoming events.) From late spring to early autumn, we organize a skate just about every weekend. Half-day or day skates usually start from Columbus Circle, at the southwest corner of Central Park, and travel anywhere from 10 to 40 miles (the average is about 15 miles). Terrain is usually suitable for intermediate skaters, although some events may require more advanced skills.

what kind of skates?
Question
My Dad and I are planning on buying inline skates. My question is, what kind to buy?
Should we get soft or hard shells, what size wheels, how many bearings etc. We are both very good ice skaters, but have never skated on inlines before. We just want to skate to work and for fun, no hockey or anything like that. Thanks in advance. Answer Hi, There are many different kind of inline skates but since your only using them for recreational use, check out the Roller Blade brand. They have a wide assortment ranging recreational to aggressive skates. As far as hard or soft shell? That's a personal preference. I would recommend the hard shell for outdoor use. Your best bet is to go try different brands and styles on. One will feel better than another and you'll know which one is meant for you.
