Biodiversity and Protected Areas / Species: Mammal species, number threatened
Technical Notes:
Definition

Mammals species, number threatened, includes all species of mammals that are recorded as threatened and that are known to occur in a given country. Threatened species include those that are listed as “Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable,” but excludes sub-species, introduced species, species whose status is insufficiently known (categorized by the World Conservation Union or IUCN as “data deficient”), those known to be extinct, and those for which status has not been assessed (categorized by IUCN as “not evaluated”).
Years Covered and Frequency of Update
Threatened species data are updated by IUCN on a continual basis according to the availability of new data. This data set provides threatened species data for the year 2002.
Methodology
The degree of threat to all 4,629 mammal species listed in Wilson and Reeder 1993 have been assessed by the IUCN. A number of new species have been described in recent years, however, that have not yet been evaluated. The quality of the mammal assessments is highly variable, with many being based on relatively poor or sparse information in the case of the rodents, insectivores and insectivorous bats. Undescribed species are only included on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species under certain specific conditions, including that the undescribed taxon in fact a good species, that clear distribution information can be provided, and that listing the undescribed species will potentially aid in its conservation.

Drake University The state currently maintains a list of threatened and endangered species. It contains 214 plant and animal species, nine of which are also on the federal list of threatened and endangered species. Species that are rare in Iowa are not necessarily rare in other states. According to Iowa's Threatened and Endangered Species Protection Program Web site (www.state.ia.us/parks/discus.htm), an endangered species is "any fish, plant life or wildlife which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant part of its range." A threatened species is "any species which is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range." The protection program is run by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which also oversees the Iowa Natural Areas Inventory and the Wildlife Diversity Program. The Natural Areas Inventory is involved in many programs aimed at helping threatened and endangered species, said Daryl Howell, a zoologist with the inventory. "Habitat loss is always the biggest thing," Howell said. Roads, housing developments and other man-made changes to the environment have an effect on all species in an area, he said.

  • Trees that have died are called snags. They would appear to be good candidates for lumber companies to simply pick up and take to their mills. So the companies and the government agreed that snags in certain areas of the forests could be hauled away because after all, who needs a dead tree? Owls do. Trees that die from a disease called "heart rot" develop cavities inside, and that's prime owl-nesting territory.
  • Lumbering in old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest is a federal issue, because 90 percent of old-growth forest is on federal land, managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. Lumber companies that operate in these forests are licensed by the federal government.

Wildlife Preserve in Champaign County Introduction Importance of Wildlife Preservation The continual spread of development, increases the number of endangered and threatened species. The destruction of wetlands is not only hazardous to our water supply, but is also a major factor in the increasing number of endangered and threatened species. There are many species that rely on wetlands for survival. Some benefits of the habitat necessary for a wildlife preserve are the following: increase in protection and natural habitat for threatened and endangered species, increase in biodiversity, increases value of adjacent properties, improves air and water quality, provides educational services, and increases positive aesthetic perception of Champaign County. Proposal/Goals The major goal of this project, is to preserve approximately 2000 acres and recreate the ideal habitats for the native wildlife of the Champaign County area. A Wildlife Educational Center will be built, to provide the following functions: as a place to educate the public on wildlife, to be used by ecologists, biologists and foresters, to be used by applicable departments of the University of Illinois, and to accommodate injured/orphaned wildlife. A wildlife corridor will be created to connect available habitats, in order to make wildlife dispersal possible. This will increase biodiversity and allow species to interact with each other. The public will be able to use educational trails, that will run from the Wildlife Educational Center through the wildlife corridor. These trails will be marked with interpretive signs, which will be perfect for school groups and young children.

Fact Sheet: Plague Imperils the Recovery of Threatened and Endangered Species Plague is limiting the successful reintroduction of the black-footed ferret into its native southwestern habitat.
The USGS National Wildlife Health Center,in collaboration with other Federal land management agencies and the Department of Defense,is conducting research on the potential for immunizing black-footed ferrets, prairie dogs, and other reservoir rodent species against plague infections.Recent advances in molecular biology and vaccine development have resulted in recombinant agents that protect laboratory mice from plague and might prove useful for vaccination of wildlife.Studies are currently being conducted at USGS to test the efficacy of two vaccines for plague in black-footed ferrets. If successful, vaccination could be used to protect ferrets from plague in captive breeding and release programs,as well as animals captured in the wild.
Mass immunization of free-ranging animals such as prairie dogs and other wild rodents is more chal- lenging, and requires novel delivery mechanisms.Studies are currently underway at USGS to test the feasi- bility of oral immunization of wild rodents and to evaluate methods for oral delivery of vaccine. These studies could ultimately pave the way for management of plague in areas where the disease threatens the recovery of black-footed ferrets and prairie dogs and in locations where the risk of plague exposure in humans is significant, such as national parks and urban areas.

BOBCATS MAKE A PHENOMINAL COMEBACK ON THEIR OWN
IOWA DNR DELISTS THEM FROM THREATENED STATUS By Ron Andrews
Furbearer/Wetlands Resource Specialist At the August DNR Commission meeting, bobcats were unanimously removed from threatened species list. The bobcat was found throughout Iowa at the time of European settlement. Although they were abundant in the early 1800’s, there was little mention of bobcats by the end of that century. In the 1930’s and 1940’s, they were present in all corners of Iowa as result of emigration from surrounding states but they were absent elsewhere. In 1977, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) developed the first list of endangered and threatened species and the bobcat was first listed as endangered. Notable bobcat population increases have occurred since the mid-1980’s. In 2001, The Natural Resource Commission (NRC) downlisted the bobcat from endangered to threatened. In 2002 and 2003, DNR staff tallied

Wildlife Management What Endangered and Threatened Species Were Found?
Two endangered and two threatened species on the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's list were found on or in the area of the Cape May County campus site. Endangered are the eastern tiger salamander and the southern gray treefrog. Threatened species are the barred owl and the redheaded woodpecker. Endangered species are ones that face immediate extinction from natural or human threats like predators or population expansion. Threatened species, on the other hand, are not in imminent danger of extinction but face that risk if their environments worsen. Species are often designated as endangered or threatened by a state's environmental agency despite living in abundance elsewhere in the US. The Endangered Eastern Tiger Salamander
The eastern tiger salamander is a stocky little amphibian, 7 or 8 inches long (although one was once measured at 13 inches) with sturdy limbs and a long tail. Its skin is mostly dark brown with irregular yellowish blotches. Its habitat stretches from southern New York State south along the East Coast into Florida, westward into the Gulf States and eastern Texas, and in the Midwest from Ohio to Minnesota. It thrives near breeding ponds and pools and can live as long as 15 years. It is designated endangered in New Jersey because of human encroachment into its habitat. It is not on the US list of endangered species.

  • Conservation genetics of endangered and threatened species.
Molecular data are being used to identify patterns of genetic diversity among endangered and threatened species. Thus far, the target species have included endangered Chinese giant salamanders and threatened Asian Bullfrogs and North American desert tortoises and this research is important for both North Amereican and Asian interests. The applications of the analyses include reintroductions, captive propagation, and setting aside wildlife protection areas.
  • Phylogenetic relationships of rattlesnakes.
Very little is known about the genealogical relationships of more than 30 species of rattlesnakes. Centre researchers are using DNA sequence data to unravel the evolutionary relationships of the species, and analyses will allow us to understand the evolution, ecology, and behaviour of rattlesnakes, their geographic distribution and other life attributes. These analyses may also allow for the more effective treatment of venomous snake bites.

WILDLIFE Surveys that have been conducted at Spenceville Wildlife Area (SWA) document the presence of 42 mammals, 160 birds, 12 reptiles, 4 amphibians, and 20 fishes including lamprey and crayfish (Rogers et al. 1996). Most of these species are permanent residents, but some are seasonal migrators such as anadromous fish and various birds including 26 as neotropical species (Rogers et al. 1996). Birds are present in all habitat types. The Riparian Woodland habitats are critical to Neotropical migrant birds, especially during the fall season. During all seasons, the highest diversities and densities of birds are found in or near dense streamside vegetation (Rogers et al. 1996). Of the 43 mammals at SWA, 9 are carnivora. The river otter has been documented in the last 2 years. The Columbian black-tailed deer population is estimated at 150-220 animals and wild pigs occur occasionally (Rogers et al. 1996). Seventeen rodent species are residents of the wildlife area, the black-tailed jackrabbit the most common. Ten species of bats also reside and 2 of those species Townsend's big-eared bat and the pallid bat, are Species of Special Concern (Rogers et al. 1996). The Pacific tree frog is the most common amphibian of SWA. Spenceville Wildlife Area has a very diverse reptile population. The Western pond turtle is a Species of Special concern and is common to the reserve. Gopher snakes and rattlesnakes are the most commonly observed snakes (Rogers et al. 1996).
