STUDY GUIDE FOR EXAM I GENERAL GEOLOGY (GEOL 1113) The following study guide is provided as an aid to help you identify the major concepts you should have learned concerning topics covered during the first few weeks of class. Key vocabulary with which you should be familiar is highlighted in UPPER CASE GREEN throughout this document and on future documents of this type for the course. You should, at the very least, be able to define the terms given in UPPER CASE GREEN in order to complete the exam. Ideally, however, I hope you will be able to do more than simply respond to definitions. You will also find words underlined in blue - these can be clicked with the mouse and will transport you to images or various sources of additional material I think you might find interesting and helpful to your studies. I hope you will find the time to explore these links, as they are often quite fascinating and (I hope) will pique your interest in this course and Geology as a discipline. It has been my experience both as a student (remember, I was a student once, too! - and it wasn't that long ago!) and professor that the students who enjoy the course most are those who spend a little extra time getting to know it better. This is especially true of Geology - I have found that most people have a natural curiosity about Geology and geologic processes. My aim is to enhance your curiosity, provide you with information regarding the basic principles of Geology, and gain sufficient knowledge of these principles to be able to apply the definitions and the concepts they represent to a fuller understanding of the Earth as a planet and our role as residents of it!

Build a collection of mineral treasures.
Rock hounding Huge areas of our nation and our world have been explored, mapped and settled by men and women in search of mineral treasures like copper, gold and diamonds. Even today, amateurs and professionals alike scour the far reaches of the globe, splitting rocks and chipping away at hillsides to find the beautiful or valuable stones and metals that may lie beneath the surface. If this sounds like a fun way to spend a day outdoors, then you may have what it takes to be a rock hounder. After receiving a Ph.D. in economic geology from the University of California at Berkeley, Virginia S. Gillerman worked as an exploration geologist looking for gold, silver and other metals in Nevada, Utah, and Alaska. Today Gillerman is an economic geologist for the Idaho Geological Survey, and teaches at Boise State University. Here she offers advice for first time rock hounders:

GOLDEN, Colo Explorers eager to trek across the Moon's battered surface or Mars' dusty plains may be stranded here on Earth but our planet offers an array of locations that, in varying degrees, mimic those otherworldly landscapes. Scientists and engineers view these lookalike places as training grounds for future expeditions. They are called analog sites. By networking analog sites, early shakeout of equipment from space suits and land rovers to drills and robotic devices becomes viable and can be rated ready for flight. Habitat construction ideas and science-gathering tasks and procedures could be practiced. Even appraising the team spirit of individuals laboring in dangerous and remote environments is feasible. Experts from around the world met here May 21-23 at the Colorado School of Mines to discuss analog sites and facilities for the human exploration of the Moon and Mars. They provided insight into what is reasonable to build and what is possible to learn before crews make their way back to the Moon and onward to the planets. Images

Your Fault, My Fault, and the New Madrid Fault
I N the earth, a fault is a line of fracture in the rocks where the two sides move by each other. The movement can be up, down or sideways, and it is caused by pressure and tension in the rock. When a sudden movement happens along one of these fault lines, an earthquake happens. A fault can be very small, it can be seen in a single quartz crystal, or it can be very long. The Great Rift Valley in east Africa is over 6000 miles long! California has a famous fault called the San Andreas fault, where the Pacific plate slips past the North American plate. Photos of the ground where faults occur show how rock beds have shifted over the years. Even the river channels get crinked when movement happens along a fault. Although California has more earthquakes, we've had bigger ones in the middle of the continent. Measuring earthquakes
A recording device called a seismometer is used to measure earthquakes. The Richter scale is what we hear about mostly, and scientists also use a scale called the Moment-Magnitude. The Richter Scale.

Before you say "Oh no, *another* table of contents", we just want you to be aware of just how interesting all the many aspects of quartz can be, and we'll let you choose where to begin. I have heard many people say that quartz is the most abundant mineral on earth. That statement should be qualified somewhat. The earth as we are able to see and collect from it largely consists of the crust....that thin skin that floats on the plastic mantle and metallic core. As such it is volumetrically insignificant compared to the total volume of the earth. To qualify any statement concerning a mineral's abundance we need to realize we don't often see much of what is deeper in the earth than the crust. With that in mind, I refer you to a quote from the Handbook of Gem Identification by Richard T. Liddicoat, Jr., page 199, that says "Quartz, the most common single mineral, includes so many varieties ..." Certainly then, quartz in its many varieties is the most common mineral exposed on the continents, and let's face it, that is where most of us collect!

Igneous Rocks
Igneous rocks
Igneous rocks (from the Greek word for fire) form from when hot, molten rock (magma) crystallizes and solidifies. The melt originates deep within the Earth near active plate boundaries or hot spots, then rises toward the surface. Igneous rocks are divided into two groups, intrusive or extrusive, depending upon where the molten rock solidifies.
Extrusive igneous rock
Quick cooling means that mineral crystals don't have much time to grow, so these rocks have a very fine-grained or even glassy texture. Hot gas bubbles are often trapped in the quenched lava, forming a bubbly, vesicular texture. Pumice, obsidian, and basalt are all extrusive igneous rocks.
The cinder cone above and the close up at right are made of basalt .
Intrusive igneous rock
Samples of Igneous rock Volcanic rock
Granite

A coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock with at least 65% silica. Quartz, plagioclase feldspar and potassium feldspar make up most of the rock and give it a fairly light color. Granite has more potassium feldspar than plagioclase feldspar. Usually with biotite, but also may have hornblende.
Lava
Pegmatite
A very coarse-grained igneous rock, commonly with a granitic composition. Usually forms from molten rock rich in water or other volatiles that facilitate the growth of large crystals. Forms sills and dikes.
