Outdoor Recreation
What a Cave
A cave is a natural opening in the ground extending beyond the zone of light and large enough to permit the entry of man. Occurring in a wide variety of rock types and caused by widely differing geological processes, caves range in size from single small rooms to interconnecting passages many miles long. The scientific study of caves is called speleology (from the Greek words spelaion for cave and logos for study). It is a composite science based on geology, hydrology, biology, and archaeology, and thus holds special interest for earth scientists of the U.S. Geological Survey.
Interest in caves has not dwindled. Although firm figures for cave visitors are not available, in 1974 about 1.5 million people toured Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, and more than 67O,000 visited Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, two of the most famous caves in the United States.
Types of Caves
A simple classification of caves includes four main types and several other relatively less important types.
  • Solution caves are formed in carbonate and sulfate rocks such as limestone, dolomite, marble, and gypsum by the action of slowly moving ground water that dissolves the rock to form tunnels, irregular passages, and even large caverns along joints and bedding planes. Most of the caves in the world-as well as the largest-are of this type.

Hylland ) Trilobites. The very name conjures up images from "B" science-fiction movies of bug-eyed, wiggly-legged, insect-like creatures that eat New York. Two questions we commonly receive are "what are trilobites and where are they found in Utah?" What are Trilobites? Trilobites are members of the phylum Arthropoda (jointed-foot animals). Arthropods have segmented bodies and appendages covered by an exoskeleton which provides support and protection for muscles and organs. Living Arthropods include insects, spiders, scorpions, ticks, crabs, lobsters, barnacles, and centipedes. Trilobites belong to an extinct class of marine organisms called Trilobita. This name refers to the three-part (tri-lobes) latitudinal and longitudinal shape of a trilobite's exoskeleton. The latitudinal lobes consist of the cephalon (head), segmented thorax (body), and pygidium (tail); the longitudinal lobes consist of two lateral lobes (on each side of the body) and an axial lobe (central back area of the exoskeleton). When did they live?

Rock Hounding in Southeast Wyoming
Question
I enjoy rock hounding as a hobby and will be visiting southeast Wyoming (staying in Centennial) around August 20th this year. While investigating things to do in the area I came across several web sites relating to places to rock hound, but not a lot in this area of the state. Can you recommend any places within a several hour drive of Centennial that would be good to explore?
Thank you, Ann Maher Michigan Answer Good Morning Ann, I would recommend visiting the website http://www.wsgsweb.uwyo.edu/metals/ as there is a section about Centennial. Also there is a free field trip scheduled on August 23rd to the Centennial Ridge district that is open to the public, you just need to provide your own transporation (4 wheel drive). The Wyoming Geological Survey also has two good books that will provide you with some information on the mineral and rocks in the southeastern Wyoming. These are Bulletin 71 "Gemstones and Other Unique Minerals and Rocks of Wyoming.." and PIC 32 "Guide to the Geology, Mining Districts, and Ghost Towns of the Medicine Bow Mountains and Snowy Range Scenic Byway".

32. Mining And Rock Hounding
Mining and rock hounding. The oldest known rock in the world is located north of Yellowknife, but you Heck, if you like geology, you ll probably like Yellowknife
http://www.csc.uvic.ca/~csmacoop/wtreports/indianandnorthernaffairs/yellowknife/
Mining and Rock Hounding
Yellowknife was built on gold, and the economy is still strongly linked to the metals market. There are two gold mines within city limits, Con mine and Giant mine, which still provide many jobs to the people living here. There was a gold boom during the 1980's, with the price of gold reaching $600 US an ounce, and during this time the mines flourished. Gold prices as they are these days (around $250 US an ounce) have caused a slump for Con and Giant, forcing them to run at reduced production and with minimal crews. At the same time however, diamond exploration has taken hold, and the first new diamond mine has opened 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife. DIAND plays a big part in resource management. You'll find that several floors of the Bellanca building where you'll be working are dedicated to exploration and resource management. DIAND performs mapping and exploration services, and releases reports for public use. Much of the Northwest Territories remains unexplored to this day, which is why many individuals and private companies continue to stake claims and map remote regions on foot and by plane. Recent discoveries of kimberlite deposits have revealed gemstone quality diamonds, and this has paved the way for new industries in the North. Diamond exploration is a growing business, and has attracted some of the biggest diamond companies in the world. For more information on diamond mining in the Northwest Territories, check out InfoNorth's diamond pages All of this isn't limited to big organizations however. The lure of gold can be strong, and with so much to be found in the North, many people try their hand at prospecting. Licenses can be purchased for $5.00 from the Mining Recorder's Office, which is conveniently located on the fifth floor of the Bellanca building. Rock hammers and chisels are a little more expensive ($40 - $60 for a hammer), but you can justify that expense to yourself later, when you strike it rich. Just be careful you're not on someone else's claim.

Features - Nova Scotia (Summer 2003)
Several members of the group went to Nova Scotia this summer to enjoy walking and geology in this eastern province of Canada. The scenery is not dramatic but the coastlines are rocky with low cliffs and so have plenty to offer. Most of the central areas are covered by forests and bogs, which have their own charms, but do not expose many rocks. So we went around the coast, enjoying seafood restaurants all the way and staying in a variety of self-catering log cabins and motels. The old basement of Nova Scotia is made of schists and slates of two small Precambrian and Lower Palaeozoic plates, which have been intruded by large granite plutons to produce brown hornfels from which the capital, Halifax, is built. The granites produce rocky headlands, many of which have beautiful lighthouses on them. See photo on left of a lighthouse on pyroclastics at Louisbourg. These plates were caught up in the closure of the Iapetus Ocean during the Lower Palaeozoic and the collision with Laurentia, which now forms the Canadian shield. Regionally metamorphosed rocks, including migmatites, are exposed along the road cuttings of the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, which has been recently opened to provide access to the under-populated but spectacular northern part of the island.
